Performance: The students will be able to determine if a sentences if using figurative or literal
language.
Conditions: The students will complete the figurative/literal language worksheet and will be
expected to score 3 out of 5 points.
Prior Knowledge: The students will be able to read and use context clues to figure out
meaning of text.
1. Focus and Review Teacher asks the students, how many of you 1 min
have ever heard someone say break a leg or
its a piece of cake. I want you to turn and talk
with the people at your table about what you
think these two sayings actually mean.
2. Statement of Teacher says, today we will be talking about 30 sec
Objective figurative and literal language or sayings.
for Student
3. Teacher Input Teacher ask each table to share what they 10 min
thought break a leg and its a piece of cake
meant. Teacher says, figurative language or
nonliteral language are when words do not mean
exactly what they say. So if someone says
break a leg do you think they are saying that
they want the person to actually break a leg? No!
They are wishing a person luck. So when
someone says its a piece of cake do you think
the person is talking about something being an
actual piece of cake? No! What do yall think they
are meaning? They are meaning that something
they are going to do or are doing is easy. Literal
language is when a persons words mean
exactly what they say. For example if I say it's a
piece of cake on the table I am actually meaning
their is a piece of cake on the table.
6. Assessment The teacher will collect the worksheet from the students. The
Methods of teacher will then grade the worksheet by giving 1 points for
all each correct answer. The student will be expected to score 3
objectives/skills: out of 5 points to meet proficiency.
7. Closure Teacher will ask the students if they have any 5 min
questions still. Teacher will ask the students if
they want to share any figurative language
saying that they like/have heard before with the
class.
8. Assessment For my independent practice ten students got two or less wrong
Results of and two students got more than two wrong out of the five
all sentences they were asked to decide if they were literal or
objectives/skills: figurative and did not show mastery.. Four of the students got
one wrong out of the five. Seven of the 19 students got none
wrong.

Reflection on lesson:
For my reading lesson I had based it off of what my teacher had told me to teach on for that
specific day. I felt really confident about this lesson as I wrote the plan. I was really excited
to teach this one, I felt really good about it. I taught on figurative language and I feel like it
went well. I read the book Amelia Bedelia, the students were so interested and attentive
while I read the book. We discussed the many saying that Amelia in the book took literally
and talked about what they thought they actually meant. I asked the students for many
examples and we pulled them from the book as well. I had them turn and talk about two
common figures of speech and we discussed them after. Looking at my assessment results
I see that for the most part the students grasped the idea of figurative and literal language.
In order to help the students who got two or less wrong still and those who got more than
the two wrong so those who did not show mastery I think I could of edited my lesson to
better suit them in their learning. I could of added some kind of sorting activity where the
students are required to work with the figurative sayings and their classmates to decide if
they are figurative or literal. This would allow the students the extra exposure and work with
these types of sayings in order to boost their understanding. Adding a hands on activity
would help the students who learn best by doing.
For each sentence decide if its using figurative language or literal language.
Write either figurative or literal on the line next to the sentence.
