Kiwanis Ski Club members


have won 19 national titles
Dr. John Dougoveto of Iron Moun-
tain, a Junior and Class B ski jumper at
Pine Mountain from 1958-67, is compiling
a history of ski jumping in the Iron
Mountain-Kingsford area. The following
is an excerpt from his book in progress.

est placing American jumper. He won

Konopacke won a World University
Games bronze medal in 1983 and
took silver and bronze medals at the
World Games in 1989. He won the
Pine Mountain tournament in 1985.

Pine Mountain debuted in 1939


Dr. John Dougoveto of Iron Moun-
tain, a Junior and Class B ski jumper at
Pine Mountain from 1958-67, is writing a
history of ski jumping in the Iron Mountain-
Kingsford area. The following is an
excerpt from his book in progress.

IRONMOUNTAINAsthegiant

thewinterof1939,thejumpersbegan
preparingthehillforuse.
Assoonassufficientsnowhadfallen,
theskiersstartedtocoverthehillwith
snowusingshovelsandbushelbaskets.
Theywouldfillthebasketswithsnow,
carrythemontothehill,dumpthesnow
whereitwasneeded,andthenpackitinto
place.
Whenthelandinghillwascompleted,
theybegantopreparethescaffoldinthe
sameway,carryingbasketsofsnowup
thescaffold.Bymid-February,theentire
scaffoldandlandinghillwerecovered,
packed,smoothedandraked.Thefinal
