Marathi students get Telugu blues

CHANDEGOAN (NIZAMABAD): Government pri-
mary school students of Chandegoan village of
Jukkal mandal are unable to read properly a single
Telugu sentence.
The tiny village, inhabited by Marathi-speaking
families, is just two kilometres away from the
Maharastra border and 120 kilometres from the
Nizamabad district headquarters. Another alarming
aspect is increasing dropout rate in the government
school as also in others in the region. Most of the
1,000 population of the village belongs to the SC
community.
"My parents do not know Telugu. They speak only
Marathi. I have difficulty in understanding lessons in
Telugu textbooks as Marati is my mother tongue,"
Bandeweet Pooja, a class V student, told TOI.
When the TOI asked her to read a Telugu sentence
on the banner on the staff room wall, she looked
blankly.
Another student, Raju of class III, said though he
understands Telugu, he is not comfortable reading

and writing in Telugu. "Because of this, the
dropout rate is also high in this school," said S
Namdev, a vidya volunteer. The number of students
in the school has dwindled to 63 from 120 last year.
The school headmaster, M Vittal, attributes this
sad state of affairs to scarcity of teaching staff. Of
the five teacher posts sanctioned for the school,
four are vacant. "Due to lack of regular teachers,
students have not been imparted proper training to
improve their language skills," he said.
"Though a number of graduates who have pur-
sued their education in the Marathi medium are job-
less and engaged in agriculture works, some par-
ents are still sending their children to Marathi
schools in Malegoan, Degloor Taluque in Nanded
district of Maharastra," Vittal said.
Mohammed Ayub, who runs a tea stall in the vil-
lage, said due to lack of facilities in the school, the
villagers are sending their children to Malegoan.
But going to the neighbouring state seems to have
given no advantage to the village youths as they

have found no jobs. Ayub said he knows several

youths who have pursued their education in Marati

medium schools who have no jobs. Similar is the
story in Dannur village of Madnoor mandal. "Even
though we have difficulty with Telugu, I have no
option but to send my son to the school," Sanju,
father of a student, said.
School headmaster G Hanumanth Rao, however,
said though initially students do find it difficult to
study in Telugu, they do pick up over a period of
time. In some other villages like Madapur,
Thakkadpalli, Vajrakand,
Hungarga in Jukkal mandal and Chinna
Shakkarga, Khelur, Hepparga, Kharegoan in
Madnoor mandal, students from Marathi-speaking
families are at sea with Telugu. The state govern-
ment's efforts to achieve 100% literacy might not
materialise because of such a situation prevailing in
the villages where a number of families speak in
Marathi.
