NUMERICAL PROBLEMS

1. A 16 kW, 220 V single phase resistance furnace employs nichrome wire as an heating
element. The average temperature of the charge is 500C and the temperature of the
element is to be limited to 1,170C. The radiating efficiency is 0.57 and emissivity is 0.9.
The resistivity of nichrome is 1.09x 10 -6 -m. Calculate the length and diameter of the
wire.
2. A plywood measuring 5 x 2 x 1 cm is to be heated by dielectric heating by placing it
between two electrodes of area of cross-section 25 x 2 cm. The distance between the
electrodes is 2 cm. The frequency of the supply is 10 MHz. The power required for
heating is 1 kW. Determine (i) the voltage required (ii) current through the plywood
which has permittivity of 5 and a p.f of 0.04.
3. Find the thickness of the copper deposited on a plate area of 0.00025m2 during
electrolysis if current of 1A is passed for 100 minutes. Density of Copper is 8,900 kg/m3
and E.C.E of Copper = 32.95 x 10-8kg/C.
4. A copper refining plant using 450 electrolytic cells carries a current of 5,500A. Voltage
per cell being 0.25 V. The plant works for 45 hours per week. Calculate the energy
consumption in kWh per tonne. The E.C.E of copper is 32.95 x 10-8kg/C.

5. A worn out circular shaft of diameter 15cm and 32cm long has to be repaired by coating
it with a layer of 1.6mm nickel. The current density is 210A/m2. ECE of nickel is 30.4 x
10-8kg/C. Density of nickel is 8.9 x 103kg/m3. Determine the quantity of electricity
required and the time taken for deposition.
