It is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, whose capital is the
city of the same name. It is located on the coast of the Arabian Gulf in the Arabian Desert,
and is bordered to the south by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah by the northeast and,
through the Hatta exclave, to the southeast Sultanate of Oman and with the emirates of
Ajman by the west and Ras al-Jaima by the north. The saltwater inlet of the Persian Gulf
called Khawr Dubai and crosses the capital city in a northeast-southwest direction.8 It has
a total area of 4114 km.

Dubai presents a tropical desert climate due to its location in the tropics, which makes the
Kppen Climate Classification type BWh.106 Summers are extremely hot, humid and with
abundant wind gusts, with temperatures that can exceed the 40 C, although during the night
they descend below 30 C. Most days are sunny throughout the year. The winters are
somewhat hot, with temperatures reaching more than 20 C in the daytime and at night
tending to fall below 15 C. Rainfall in general is scarce and practically nil in the summer

The architectural forms of Dubai come from the fusion of several styles adopted from other
cultures. For example, features of countries such as Iran and India can be seen in the wind
collectors and carved doors characteristic of certain buildings.37 Wind direction is particularly
important in the design of houses and other structures306 due to the prevailing warm climate.
This is due to the urban planning of houses and buildings, arranged relatively close together to
form narrow corridors that are known to the natives as sikkas. They have a north-south
orientation and reach the Khawr Dubayy, ensuring that fresh air currents flow through most of
the day. Religion is another relevant aspect of housing design; the rooms present interior views
according to the concept of modesty indicated by the Muslim religion.

has also been favored by its geographic location in the Middle East as a "natural gateway to

1997 tourism has been regulated by the emirate's Commercial and Tourist Marketing
