BIG KUTA
Quick Start Guide

Dear friend,

Congratulations on ordering your 'Hikuta' self defense training materials for

developing startling self defense skills by yourself or with others.

Save this letter as a reference guide and start fresh, leaving any past
experience behind at least at the beginning as you are learning Hikuta.

Have your DVD remote control with you when you watch Big Kuta' so that
you can pause and rewind as necessary. Also have a pen and notepad to
write down your thoughts and any questions as you learn.

*Note: I recommend that before you start practicing that you carefully watch
the entire first DVD without practicing.

By doing that first youll begin to have a better understanding of the unique
aspects of Kuta and youll have an easier time learning the principles.

For the purpose of your improved learning ability, Ive structured the learning
plan in this quick start guide to help you to become proficient in two to three
months, although there is a urgent start plan on page 4 that can help you
achieve powerful skills in one day.

Follow the pace/layout, (practice amount of time and number of times each
week) to learn more efficiently.

You should practice each chapter at least 10 times before moving on to the
next, unless you are very comfortable with the concepts then move forward
to the next chapter. However you should still practice each chapter at least
five times.

If possible practice at different times of day and on different surfaces so that

you're practicing to be ready for any attack no matter what time of day or
what type of surface you're standing on. (Be sure to use caution, especially
on slippery surfaces.)

After two or three months, your practice will be accomplished in a shorter

time frame because youll be more familiar with the principles.

During the first five to seven days of your practice youll be developing your
F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L. move as a powerful tool for defending yourself.

The F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L. is based on your natural reflexes. This will enable you
to automatically defend without awkward stances or moves and without
having to think first when youre attacked.

In Kuta a helpful phrase is a thought equals a strike. In other words if I have

thought about striking, Ive already made the strike because my reflexes
made me defend before my mind had a chance to think about it. This is very
beneficial on the street, because if you were to take the time to think about
your response you could be injured or killed. Violence happens quickly and
demands a very quick response.

SCHEDULE

Set a time that best fits your needs. Select specific days and hours that work
for you. Its best to pick set times and days for each week, even if the times
and days must change each week due to your busy schedule.

This will help ensure that you accomplish your goal of being able to protect
yourself by the target date that you set. Yes, I want you to set a target for
when youll become proficient at defending yourself, however, you should be
reasonable in setting your target of how long it will take.

Typically, three to six months is a good target to really learn Kuta, although in
one day you can develop a powerful move.

GOALS

By the way, I recommend writing down your target date now if you havent
already. Whether you write it on a calendar, organizer, PDA or even a note
on the bulletin board, just be sure to write it down, because writing down your
self-defense goal(s) will greatly increase the chances that youll achieve
them. [So for that matter write down all of your other goals/ideas for the
coming year and some ideas on how youll reach them.]

Millionaires make up only 3% of the United States population. Guess what

percentage of the population writes down their goals. Thats right 3%!

Now I know that some have inherited their money, but theres a vast many
more who have taken the time to set goals and work hard to achieve them,
just like youll achieve your goal of being able to protect yourself as well as
having the added confidence that comes with it, when you set your goal(s).

You might say, Id love to write down some self-defense goals but Im not
sure what to write. Well, Ill get you started. You might say, Id like to learn a
simple, but effective self-defense method at home that I could use to defend
myself or a loved one against any attack, increasing my self-confidence, and
be really efficient at it by _____________________.(Enter your own date).

URGENT START
If you have an urgent need to learn to protect yourself right away, spend one
or two hours today, then practice everyday and accelerate your progression
through the chapters, still beginning with a thorough familiarization of the first
DVD about developing power chapter.

For extreme circumstances it may be possible to arrange an emergency self

defense consultation by phone or in person. This can be a rapid way to learn
but it also can be very expensive.

If you need to learn a move right away, try learning the Chin Jab (modified
with Kuta). Click here http://www.hikuta.com/Video_Clips/ChinJab_DSL.wmv
to see it. This is a powerful move that you can learn in about 20 minutes. To
build on this move learn the F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L. steps and watch the chapter
about using your Open Hand.

POWER MOVE
The first time you watch 'Big Kuta' I recommend that you watch the first DVD
all the way through without practicing. Then the 2nd time you watch it,
practice the 'developing power' chapter, replaying it at least 3 times.

As you begin to practice the other chapters, always begin by warming up with
the 'developing power chapter, also known as the Dynamic Delivery System
(DDS). This will be the move that supplies the speed and power for every self
defense move you make, so be sure to learn the 'DDS' well.

By the way, the DDS will enable you to automatically respond using your
natural reflexes so that you won't have to think first before defending. Also,
you won't flinch first before you defend. Your flinch will become your
defensive move so you'll be able to respond quicker to any attack.

Once you've gone through the 'developing power' chapter 5 to 10 times your
quickness should start to increase.

Make sure to memorize the steps for the F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L. move.

You should end by imagining someone attacking you 10 to 20 times, and

picturing yourself mentally performing your move in a variety of different
attacks.

When you imagine someone attacking you in many different ways it will help
you to be more flexible in applying your move and it will help you to
automatically defend in a sudden attack.

This is very helpful because when someone suddenly attacks, you wont
have time to think about what to do. Youll have to move instantly for your
best chance at survival.

Use your Imagination to think of creative ways to defend yourself with Kuta.
This will be very helpful for learning this art.

Leading education administrators encourage visualizing their material, as a

very effective way to improve ones skills. Visualization can be just as
beneficial as physical practice. For best results include both.

You could also use a mirror to practice your moves so you can see what you
are doing. Also, try to videotape yourself now and after you practice two or
three months to see the difference in your speed.

Once you learn the Power Move you can practice it anywhere!

HOW OFTEN
Practice your F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L Move at least once a day for the next five to
seven days. By the end of this time you should be able to practice your
F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L Move in 5 minutes or less.

From here onward practice every weekday, or 5 days of your choosing. Just
be sure to practice five times a week for 30 minutes, preferably 45 minutes
before or after a meal.

Begin with the F.R.C.C.E.F.U.L move to warm up. Then move to simple, core
techniques which can be applied quickly and with power.

EQUIPMENT
It can be helpful to have someone hold a striking pad or get suited up in a full
body padded suit to be able to deliver light to medium strikes and kicks,
however you can always hang two training pads on a wall, tree or on a post
like I did when I learned this art.

One pad should be at chest level and one should be at shin level and/or you
could get a training dummy.
Two square boat floatation pads with a piece of plywood in between them
make a great striking pad.

Having some type of pad, cushion or punching bag to strike and kick is
helpful so that you wont have to strike and kick into the air.

Not only does it feel better to deliver force into a solid object, it is better for
the joints in your body, which can start to ache if all of your moves are
performed without making a solid contact. [Here are some affordable training
tools for you that Ive used for self-defense training:]

1. Seat cushion from the chair on the patio. (no cost) Have someone
hold this in front of a phone book, on the right side of their chest (away
from their heart) for protection while you strike.
2. Square-shaped boat seat cushion with straps on the sides: open one
side to insert piece of plywood in between the foam padding, then re-
stitch together. (about $12 U.S. dollars) This can be held by a friend or
mounted on a tree or post.
3. Telephone book with two old towels: fold each full-size shower towels
in half two times, placing one on the bottom, and one on the top of a
phone book. Then use some duct tape [200mph tape] or twine/rope to
fasten the phone book in between the two towels. This will offer
protection to the person holding the pad and to the hands of the
person delivering a strike. (Cost: $5 U.S. dollars, but possibly free if
you have these items available).
4. Martial arts pads and punching bags can be purchased at your local
sporting goods store. ($40-$250 and even more, depending on the
features) This category ranges from pads that can be held to bags that
can hang from a tree or rafters.

Special Note: all of these training items are for delivering light to medium
force, unless the targets are hanging on a solid object like a tree, a post or a
wall.

PRACTICING ALONE
One of the most common questions Im asked is can I practice alone?

This question is probably asked for a few different reasons; 1) martial arts
classes are always filled with lots of people, and 2) people generally like to
be around other people who have similar interests.

There is actually another underlying reason that is less obvious, and that is
the martial arts classes of today require that a person has someone to
practice with to really be complete.

The reason for this is because they need the other person to start or initiate
the attack as they passively wait for this to happen before they make their
move. Its almost like sitting in a classroom, raising your hand and waiting for
the teacher to call on you before youre able to speak.

This is how the martial arts are structured. You need to get into a stance and
wait for the attack, just like a student in school raises his hand in a
classroom, waiting to talk.

In the martial arts class, when the other person attacks, then the martial artist
defends himself, just like when the teacher calls on the student who is then
able to speak.

This get into a stance and wait mindset is a great limitation to the
effectiveness of martial arts, forcing the user to be one step behind the
attacker by having to wait on his attack, instead of watching for signs of
danger and then taking immediate action like we do in Kuta.
When I did research for my eBook How to Survive a Mugging, (which can
be downloaded from our website www.hikuta.com) I discovered that standing
still in any kind of stance is one of the most dangerous things you can do.

All of the police officers I spoke to said it that it is very important to keep
moving; and that you should never wait on the other person.

They said that if you stop and get into a stance to defend yourself; other
attackers often come from behind to knock you down to the ground.

Since Kuta (or Hikuta as its commonly known) was designed to be able to
defeat large groups of attackers, its principles require you to keep moving
continuously until you defeat them all, or they give up AND you have
removed yourself to a safer location.

Furthermore, since Kuta doesnt wait for others but keeps you moving, your
techniques dont depend on what they (the attackers) are doing for the most
part, although we do have some principles we use for facing a group attack.
(Ive documented several of them in my Big Kuta live seminar 5-DVD set.

Therefore, since those of us who use and practice Kuta do not have to wait
on others, to make our moves, we also do not need others to practice with.

All the best to you!
