General Description

1.1 Overview
The UMI is an Ethernet enabled unit containing 8 binary inputs, 8 binary outputs and
RS232 serial interface. All interfaces are accessible over a network using the M2M
protocol on TCP/IP. This interface is used for driving OSA units with SyncView Plus.

1.2 Functions
The UMI performs the following:

Supplies RS232 equipment through Ethernet network

Provides digital outputs and inputs

In addition, the UMI also features:

Totally maintenance-free design.

Equipment Description

GND : device ground

PWR : device power (max. 200 mA)
The device can be powered from a standard coaxial cable of from the I/O
connector (200 mA internal fuse = suitable only for testing purposes)
I.GND : common ground for optocouplers.
I.0 to I.7 : 8 optocoupled inputs 5-15V
All 8 inputs are realized using common ground optocouplers (IGND pin).
The input voltage range is 5-15V.
The pins can then be controlled using the contacts together with the
POWER pin, which has the power adaptor voltage (connect IGND with
GND).

CAUTION
Maximum current on the Power pin is 200 mA !

O.COMMON : Over-voltage output connected to the plus pole of the power

source. This can be useful when you want to control a relay from this
output.
O.0 to O.7 : 8 open collector outputs, with common diode over-voltage
protection. The outputs are realized using 8 open collector transistors. Two
outputs are internally connected to a relay, whose contacts are also led out
to the device's connector. The protecting diodes are connected to the
"common" pin, which should be connected to the plus pole of the next
device (for example a relay). This way the pins can be protected against
load peaks.

Installation

3.1 Overview
This section provides unpacking and Inspection instructions, working conditions, tools
required and power up for the UMI. To prevent injury and/or equipped damage, do not
ignore the warnings, notes and recommendations and read the section Safety
Considerations

Note:
If you encounter problems during any of the following procedures, please
contact Customer Services.

3.2 Unpacking and Inspection

ESD CAUTION
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) must be avoided so as not to damage or
destroy static sensitive components in the UMI. Please observe proper ESD
handling procedures.

Check first that the packing does not have any signs of rough handling such as dents or
scratches, which might have occurred during transportation. Also inspect the equipment
carefully for possible damages (knobs broken, handles bent, etc.).
Should the equipment have suffered any damage, immediately notify the carrier and retain
the packing material for inspection.

CAUTION
This instrument must be operated only as specified by the manufacturer.
Use other than as specified may compromise the safety precautions of the
system.

3.3 Working Conditions

In order to work within specification, the UMI should be installed at a location which does
not exceed the following working conditions:

Operating temperature range : +5C to +55C

Humidity : 5 to 95% non condensing
