ABSTRACT
The following article presents the pharmacological interactions of antibiotics, through the use of one
of them (azithromycin).
Pharmacological interactions are changes in the effects of a drug due to the recent or simultaneous
use of other drugs (drug-drug interactions) or to food intake (nutrient-drug interactions). The effects
of pharmacological interactions are often unwanted and sometimes deleterious. Interactions can
intensify or reduce the action of one or more drugs and lead to side effects or treatment failure.
Azithromycin, an antibiotic belonging to the macrolide group, has enjoyed a wide range of safety.
There have recently been studies that associate it with a potential increase in the risk of sudden
death due to cardiovascular causes, during the first five days of treatment, in elderly users and
previous heart disease. In addition, the risk may increase under conditions of interaction of
azithromycin with other drugs.
