For the first part of this lesson, the teacher will review a story that is familiar to the class. Then the
teacher will use guided instruction to help the students identify the characters, settings and events
from the story. During this lesson, the teacher will be taking notes of what students said so that the
teacher can later create a PowerPoint that students can look through at home with the help of a
parent/guardian. The PowerPoint will be uploaded to the teachers online blog so that the parents and
students can have access to it at home. The PowerPoint will include what setting, characters, and
events are as well as include a voice recording of the teacher so that the 1st grade student can follow
along.
For the second part of the lesson, students will use clip art and academic language to create their own
mini story using PowerPoint. Students may either chose a story to identify the characters, settings, and
event or the student may make up a story to identify these traits from. The presentation should be 5-8
slides long and should identify the characters, settings, and events in their story. The story itself is not
intended to be complex and should be completed in class with teacher help or at home with parental
help by uploading the PPT file onto a flash drive.
This lesson should take approximately 5 days in 45min-1 hr segments. (1st day: Teacher takes notes of
discussion to create PPT, 2nd day: Students are able to access PowerPoint and look over it at school or
at home. 3rd & 4th day: Computer lab: Students create their own mini PowerPoint story with help of
teacher and school tech help and/or parent at home. 5th day: Students present their work with their
peers.
