Vocabulary

Interaction (noun)

Its an occasion when two or more people or things communicate with or react to each
other.

- Theres not enough interaction between the management and the workers.
- Language games are usually intended to encourage student interaction.

Assimilate (verb)

a. To become part of a group, country, society, etc., or to make someone or


something become part of a group, country, society, etc.
- You shouldnt expect immigrants to assimilate into an alien culture immediately.

b. To understand and remember new information and make it part of your basic
knowledge so that you can use it as your own.
- Its hard to assimilate so much information.

c. To absorb food or a substance into the tissue of a living organism.


- In this form vitamins can be easily assimilated by the body.

Savant (noun)

When someone who has a mental disability but who is very good at doing a particular
thing, for example remembering things.

- The museum of Egyptian antiquities was founded at Bulak in 1863, being then
housed in a mosque, by the French savant Auguste Mariette.

Transform (verb)

a. To change something completely, usually to improve it.


- You have transformed this house!

b. To change the appearance or nature of completely.


- He transformed the old kitchen into a beautiful sitting-room.

Predictable (adjective)

When something or someone is happening or behaving in a way that you expect; not
unusual or interesting.

- The results were predictable.

Expertise (noun)

Its when someone has a high level of knowledge or skill.

- We admired the expertise with which he prepared the meal.


- She has considerable expertise in French history.
Benefit (noun and verb)

a. Something good that helps you.


- Ive had the benefit of a happy childhood.

b. A helpful service that employees receive in addition to their pay.


- The personnel director outlined the employee benefits health insurance,
pension plan, etc.

c. To help someone.
- These changes will benefit the whole company.

Emerge (verb)

a. To appear from somewhere or come out of somewhere.


- A figure emerged from the shadows.

b. To come out; to come into view.


- The swimmer emerged from the water.

c. To become known.
- It emerged that they had had a disagreement.

Anxious (adjectives)

a. Worried and very nervous.


- Shes very anxious about her exams.

b. Wanting something to happen soon.


- Hes anxious to get home.

c. Worried about what may happen or have happened.


- She is anxious about her fathers health.

d. Causing worry, fear or uncertainty.


- There were a few anxious moments, but the plane landed safely.

e. Wanting very much (to do etc something).


- Hes very anxious to please.

Compensate (verb)

a. To pay someone money in exchange for something that has been lost or
damaged or for some problem.
- Victims of the crash will be compensated for their injuries.

b. To provide something good or useful in place of something or to make someone


feel better about something that has failed or been lost or missed.
- We were late and I was driving fast to compensate.
c. To give money to (someone) or to do something else to make up for loss or
wrong they have experienced.
- This payment will compensate (her) for the loss of her job.

Disabled (adjective)

When someone has an illness or condition that makes it difficult to do the things that
other people do.

- They are demanding equal rights for the disabled.


- He's not disabled, so we can't pay disability.
