Social Studies Update & Tentative Schedule

Monday, August 23, 2010 – Tuesday, August 31, 2010

***You will notice that I do not assign much written homework. As a

result, pop quizzes will be administered 2 – 3 times a week to ensure
that students are reviewing flashcards and notes nightly. The sixth
grade social studies concepts are very complex and require students
to study as we progress through the unit. It is essential that students
know and understand the vocabulary terms, economic concepts, and
government concepts. The unit test will require students to apply the
information that we have learned through the unit.

**Sample test question:

1. (CG4b)You live in a small country ruled by one man, who is also the
head of the military. The only TV and radio stations you have are
owned and run by the government. You can access the Internet, but
you can only see certain government-approved websites. Although
your country has elections, you are not allowed to vote for your
current leader. People who criticize or protest against the government
are jailed or executed. Which form of government best describes the
government where you live?

a. autocratic c. democratic

b. parliamentary d. oligarchic

2. (E6a) The United Kingdom Customs Service has found toxic lead-based
paint in toys imported from a Chinese toy-making company. These
toys are intended for sale in the United Kingdom. Exposure to the
