Preface
Foreword to special issue on Geosynthetics in Mining Applications
The use of geosynthetics in various mining operations is now
widespread. While they have not been accepted as readily as in
the general construction market, growth in the mining industry is
occurring as operators begin to understand the advantages associ-
ated with the use of these materials. This special issue of Geotextiles
and Geomembranes gives an overview of the research effort con-
ducted in various part of the world on the theme of geosynthetics
in mining applications and also gives an insight on the practical
issues commonly faced by the geosynthetics and mining industries.
It contains ten papers with the common theme of geosynthetics
applications in mining works. The applications addressed focus
on: containment of liquors/mine tailings/acid mine drainage and
chemical compatibility, heap leach pads, ltration and dewatering
of mine tailings using electrokinetic geosynthetics.
The content of this issue will certainly constitute a reference in
the years to come for practitioners, manufacturers as well as
researchers and hopefully will also inspire more innovative applica-
tions for the benet of the mining and the geosynthetics industries.
