Hi everyone. / Could I begin/ by asking you to raise your hands/ if you think that music is an integral
discipline /as important as physics/ or chemistry /in the childrens school education?
Well. /According with your raising of hands,/ I would recommend you /to listen this presentation/
in order to know /why music is as important as other subjects,/ understanding the truth behind the
music.
For starters/, I will tell you about my relationship with music./ I have three brothers/ and since we
were eight years old /we belonged to Battuta/, a foundation were we learned to read music,/ play
instruments,/ play with an orchestra, /etc /. In that moment /we had to invest so much time and
effort /in school and Batuta,/ and this musical practice gave us the discipline,/ the order and other
qualities/ to have an excellent academic performance,/ but why?/ According to scientists/ music
has a very big impact on the brain./ Through brain scans, /scientists have studied the neuronal
processes that occur/ when someone hears music,/ and it is amazing /how music involves the work
/of almost all the brain structures:/ the motor cortex,/ the visual cortex,/ the frontal cortex,/the
cerebellum,/among many many others./ This translates into a better development /of several
/ logic, / mathematics,/ etc./ Not without reason, /some of the greatest scientists /and thinkers in
history/ such as Rousseau and Einstein,/ were musicians/ and appreciated the music in the same
In order to illustrate/ more clearly this information,/ I invite you to watch the next TED video:

In this moment, / do you still think/ music is not as important as your majors?
Its sad to say /but many people think /that effectively /music is not important. /It is sad because/
even when the large number of benefits/ that music gives is proved, / our society just ignores and/
wastes ithem. /This type of attitude/ begins in the school, / where the problem that I am going to
talk about is present. /The musical education in schools /is very mediocre/ and squanders the
In almost all the schools of Colombia, / the musical education is limited to one hour per week/ where
students and professors both /cannot do a good job. /Even, /the time of the class/ is wasted
sometimes / in other subjects different from music /such as the others classes /or the rehearsals for
institutional celebrations./
In this sense, /students do not learn/ what they should be learning /(musical notation, theory,
harmony, musical appreciation and the most important playing an instrument) /in order to activate
Unlike Colombia, /in USA and Europes schools /the music is very important /and is one of the main
subjects of their curriculum./ The students graduate /knowing to play one instrument,/ reading
music, /having all the skills that music can give./ Not without reason /the students from those
regions/ get into college with high levels in mathematics,/ foreign languages, /sports, /social
sciences,/ etc./
On the other hand, /the musical education here in Colombia/ is a vicious circle /because the
students from school /cannot receive a good education /when the teachers they have got /are not
In order to solve /or begin to improve this problem, /two things must be done./ First, /the
government must invest /and promote the music /not only as an entertainment space /but as an
integral part of the culture of our society /. The government could implement this solution by
making concert tickets cheaper, investing in projects and institutions like Batuta and Orquesta
Filarmnica de Bogot and creating informative campaigns about the importance of music with
parents and children in schools. Finally, /the government should support the professional musical
students /with scholarships abroad /where musical education is better /and also /with more spaces
to work here in Colombia, in order to encourage these students to work /as school teachers and
I finish my presentation /with two quotes from the composer Beethoven /and Annie Lennox:
I think that the music /is the most phenomenal platform for the intellectual thought./ (Annie
Lennox)
