Transition
To transition the children into gathering time I will do some stretches with them. I will have them reach
really high into the air, and I will have them sit on the ground and stretch to touch their toes.
Activity Name Description Materials
1. Mister Sun! Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden sun, please shine Flashlight
down on me. Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden Clear plastic cup
sun, hiding behind the tree. These little children Red plastic cup
are asking you, to please come out so we can Tinted plastic cup
play with you. Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden (IWP)
sun, please shine down, wont you shine down on,
please shine down on me (2x)
We get light from so many different places! We
can get light from the sun, stars, light bulbs,
candles, and flashlights! With all of these different
sources of light, there are also things that can
help us to see them, and sometimes stop us from
seeing them. I will have three objects with me,
one representing a transparent surface, a
translucent surface, and an opaque surface.
When light can pass completely through an
object, and we can see to the other side, it is
called transparent! Will you all say transparent
with me? I will hold up a clear plastic cup. This
cup is transparent because it is clear, and we can
see right through it! Other transparent objects are
windows, and glasses! I will hold up a green
(translucent) plastic cup next. This cup is
translucent! That means that some of the light
can come through but it wont be as bright, and
the objects we see through it might be a little
blurry or a different color. Other things that are
translucent are things like wax paper or
sunglasses! I will hold up a regular plastic cup
next. This cup is opaque! That means that no
light can shine through this object, because it is
being blocked. Other opaque objects that block
light are things like walls or cardboard.
2. We are going to play a game with our Large Parachute(GG)
parachute now! Take parachute out and have Flashlight(RR1)
the children hold on. Were going to shake it
really high, everyone show me how we shake it
up high! Now low Okay now when we shake it
up high I want everyone to get under the
parachute and hold it down by your sides like this
(model for them) Once we are under the
parachute I will say, When we are under here its
a little dark, but we still have some light shining
through! This is because when the light hits our
parachute we can see that it is translucent. It isnt
transparent because we cant see through our
parachute, but it is translucent because some
light is able to come through.
Transition to Self- Thank You for playing with the parachute with
Selected me! Now we need to roll it back up so we can go
play in the sun!
