Bhagavatam mahima Glories and benefits of organizing

Bhagavatam saptaha
There are unlimited benefits of organizing and atending at Srimad Bhagavatam katha. The prime
result is that if person is hearing attentivly can attain pure love for Krishna. There are many
benefits and we will mention few described in Srimad Bhagavatam Mahatmya of Skanda Purana:

The Supreme Lord said: O Grandfather Brahma, one should regularly hear the famous Srimad
Bhagavatam with faith. Know for certain that such hearing is the only means of satisfying Me.

One who daily reads Srimad Bhagavatam will attain with every syllable the results of giving a
brown cow in charity.

One who daily reads or hears even a half or a quarter of a verse of Srimad Bhagavatam attains
the results of giving one thousand cows in charity.

My dear son, one who daily reads Srimad Bhagavatam with full concentration attains the results
of studying the eighteen Puranas.

Vaishnavas like Prahlada Maharaja are always present wherever the topics of Srimad
Bhagavatam are discussed. Those who worship Srimad Bhagavatam are beyond the jurisdiction
of Kali.

Those persons who worship the Vaishnava literature Srimad Bhagavatam in their house are freed
from all sins and they become worshipable by even the demigods.

In the age of Kali, I become very pleased with those who regularly worship Srimad Bhagavatam
in their house and dance without fear.

O My dear son, as long as rmad-Bhgavatam is present in ones house, for that long his
forefathers consume milk, ghee, honey, and water.

One who with devotion gives the gift of Srimad Bhagavatam to a Vaishnava resides in My abode
for millions of kalpas.

One who always worships Srimad Bhagavatam in his house satisfies the demigods for the
duration of one kalpa.

If even a half or a quarter of a verse of Srimad Bhagavatam is kept in ones house that is
glorious. For what is the need of accumulating thousands of other literatures?

In Kali-yuga, one who does not keep Srimad Bhagavatam in his house can never be delivered
from the control of Yamaraja.
In Kali-yuga, how can one be considered a Vaishnava who does not keep Srimad Bhagavatam in
his house? He is more abominable than a candala.

My dear son, lord of the universe. For My pleasure and the pleasure of the Vaishnavas one
should keep Srimad Bhagavatam with devotion.

In Kali-yuga, wherever the auspicious Srimad Bhagavatam is recited, I reside, along with all the
demigods.

My dear son, all the holy rivers, kundas, and lakes, all sacrifices, the seven sacred cities
Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Haridvra), Kashi, Kanchi, Avanti (Ujjain), and Dvarakaand all the
holy mountains are present where Srimad Bhagavatam is discussed.

O lord of the universe, one should hear Srimad Bhagavatam in order to attain fame, religiosity,
victory, freedom from sin, or liberation.

By hearing Srimad Bhagavatam one becomes religious and he lives a long life, free from disease
and all sinful reactions.

O lord of the universe, I speak the truth: those who do not hear the topmost literature, Srimad
Bhagavatam, or do not express happiness after hearing it are kept under Yamarajas jurisdiction.

O My dear son, there is no one more sinful than one who does not go anywhere to hear Srimad
Bhagavatam, especially on the day of Ekadashi.

I reside in the house of one who has kept there a verse, a half verse, or even a quarter of a verse
of Srimad Bhagavatam.

The purity one attains by hearing Srimad Bhagavatam cannot be attained by visiting
Badarikashrama or taking bath in the confluence at Prayaga.

O four-headed Brahma, I go wherever the topics of Srimad Bhagavatam are discussed, just as a
cow spontaneously follows her calf.

I never leave one who enjoys speaking or hearing Srimad Bhagavatam.

One who does not offer respects after seeing the auspicious Srimad Bhagavatam loses the pious
credits he accumulated over the past year.

I am unlimitedly pleased with one who stands in respect and then offers obeisances upon seeing
Srimad Bhagavatam.

A person who circumambulates Srimad Bhagavatam achieves the results of an ashvamedha-

yajna with every step. Of this there is no doubt.
For one who stands in respect and then offers obeisances upon seeing Srimad Bhagavatam, I
offer him wealth, wife, children, and devotional service.

My dear son, I am controlled by those who worship Srimad Bhagavatam with sixteen ingredients
and hear Srimad Bhagavatam with devotion.

O Brahma, O Suvrata, among all types of festivals, the festival of discussing Srimad Bhagavatam
is the topmost.
Those who participate in such festivals for My pleasure and hear Srimad Bhagavatam with
devotion and those who worship Srimad Bhagavatam with cloth, ornaments, flowers, lamp, and
incense certainly control Me just as a chaste wife controls her good husband.
Bhagavatam story: Devotee attracted Lord Shiva by reading Srimad
Bhagavatam!

Once there lived an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna by name Poonthaanam.

He worshipped Guruvayoorappan (Lord Krishna) with all his heart and soul.

People loved him for his beautiful Bhagavatam discourses.

There is a temple in North Kerala called Kottiyoor. The significant deity in the temple is Lord
Siva. The temple was kept open only for a few days during a year.

There were no human activities in that place for the rest of the year.

Once Poonthaanam reached the Kottiyoor temple and had a bath in the holy river.

He worshiped the compassionate Lord Siva, felt happy, and stayed there for a few days.

He recited Bhagavatam everyday in front of the deity and several hundreds of people listened to
his sweet discourse on the wonderful pastime in the 10th Canto 60th of Srimad Bhagavatam
named Lord Krishna Teases Queen Rukmini.

The Lord decides to play with His beloved wife Queen Rukmini and wanted to listen to Her.

He playfully asks Her why She wanted to marry the Lord when She had better choices like King
Sisupala, Salva, Jarasandha, etc.

Hearing this Queen Rukmini faints and Lord consoles Her.

This is the gist of the chapter.

Poonthaanam finished reading this part of the chapter and kept the bookmark at the end of the
chapter so that he can continue reciting from the next chapter.

Next day, to his surprise, he found the bookmark at beginning of the same chapter.

So Poonthaanam read the same part for the second time.

This was repeated for the rest of the days.

It was the last day to close the temple for the year.

Poonthanam finished the discourse and was returning from the temple with the other devotees,
but somehow left the Bhagavatam in the temple itself.

Having walked some distance suddenly he remembered that he forgot to bring the Bhagavatam
with him.

He hurried back; crossed the river and reached the entrance to the temple, which was closed. He
was all alone.

He could hear somebody reciting the same part of the chapter from Bhagavatam inside the
temple.
As he looked through the keyhole he saw Lord Siva himself reading from Poonthanams
Bhagavatam.

Mother Parvati and his other Bhoothaganas were listening.

Their eyes were filled with tears out of devotion.

Poonthaanam stood there motionless and heard the whole recitation.

At the end Lord Siva asked Parvati devi, Did you like the Bhagavatam recitation?

Parvathi replied,Yes, it was nice, but was not as good as Poonthaanams.

Lord Siva replied, Yes. That is true. I also like to hear Bhagavatam from Poonthaanam. That is
why I placed the bookmark again and again at the beginning of the same topic every day.

Hearing this Poonthaanam who stood outside was shaken up and uttered the holy name of
Krishna loudly.

When he watched again, Lord Siva and Mother Parvati had disappeared from his sight.

Moral of the story:

This pastime clearly explains how all the living entities including the demigods love this great
literature.

Srimad Bhagavatam (verse 12.13.18) says:

srimad bhagavatam puranam amalam yad vaishnavaanaam priyam

yasmin paaramahamsyam ekam amalam jnaanam param geeyate

tatra jnaana viraaga bhakti sahitam naishkarmyam aavishkrtam

tac chrnvan supathan vicaarana paro bhaktyaa vimucyen narah

Srimad Bhagavatam is the spotless purana. It is most dear to the Vaishnavas because it
describes the pure and supreme knowledge of the paramahamsas. This Bhagavatam reveals the
means for becoming free from all material work, together with the processes of transcendental
knowledge, renunciation and devotion. Anyone who seriously tries to understand Srimad
Bhagavatam, who properly hears and chants it with devotion, becomes completely liberated.

The word paaramahamsyam indicates that even completely liberated souls are eager to hear and
narrate Srimad Bhagavatam.

Stody: Ajamils previous life

Pariksit asked, Ajamil was a learned Brahmana; how did it occur that he established a
relationship with a prostitute?

In answer Sri Sukadeva Goswami narrated Ajamils previous life. Ajamil was a pious mendicant
living in the foothills of the Himalayas.

One day, while performing his duties, he drank ice-cold water from a mountain stream from
which he became extremely cold and fell unconscious.

At that moment a Brahmana walking with his sixteen-year-old daughter arrived there for some
water, as well as a doctor.

The doctor checked the pulse of the unconscious mendicant and said, If this mendicant is
warmed by the bodily heat from a young woman he will regain consciousness.

The concerned Brahmana was very gentle and innocent and trusted the doctor.
Hence, he brought the unconscious mendicant to his house and instructed his daughter to cuddle
with the man.

Thus, by the bodily heat from the girl, the mendicant regained consciousness, where he found the
girl lying with him, which greatly anger him.

He then cursed the girl to take birth as a prostitute.

The girl was also very religious and possessed spiritual potency and thus cursed the mendicant
saying, Because of pride you cursed an innocent person; therefore you will be born in a Vedic
Brahmana family and you will keep my association.

Moral of the story:

Pride is greatest enemy of the soul. Even greatly spiritual advance people easily fall down from
there path when pride enter there consciousnesses.

As Krishna says in Bhagavad-gt As It Is 16.4:

dambho darpo bhimna ca
krodha pruyam eva ca
ajna cbhijtasya
prtha sampadam surm

Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance these qualities belong to those of demoniac
nature, O son of Pth.

PURPORT

In this verse, the royal road to hell is described. The demoniac want to make a show of religion
and advancement in spiritual science, although they do not follow the principles.

They are always arrogant or proud in possessing some type of education or so much wealth.

They desire to be worshiped by others, and demand respectability, although they do not
command respect. Over trifles they become very angry and speak harshly, not gently.

They do not know what should be done and what should not be done.

They do everything whimsically, according to their own desire, and they do not recognize any
authority.

Krishna story: Brahmana blind to see mother Ganga!

There is this story of a Brahmin in the Skanda Purana, who undertook a pilgrimage tour of
temples and Holy Rivers, after leasing his house to some Pravakthas who had come to his village
for a Bhagavatha Sapthaham.

He managed to reach Kasi and went to take bath in River Ganga.

To his surprise he found the Ganga to be dry.

While he was wondering what is wrong, because his understanding was that Ganga will always
have water in it, some punditas were coming after their bath in Ganga.

He asked them where they took bath.

They replied that Ganga is flowing with full majesty and they took their bath.

Then our poor brahmin realised that he might have done some sin because of which he is not
able to see Gangaji.

He wanted to clarify it and went to one realized soul, who was calling for Ganga and the River
goddess Ganga came for his service, all the Holy River and Devatas were serving him in his
Ashrama.

Wondered, our brahmin asked him what he had done to get the services of these River
Goddesses.

That Punya Atma replied that he did not know anything, my father used to read Srimad
Bhagavatham regularly and after he passed away, as I do not know how to read Bhagavatham, all
I did was placing the Holy Book in the Pooja room and offer few flowers and Tulasi leaves to it
every day.

The brahmin realised his mistake, the Bhagavatha Sapthaham was going on in his village and he
set out to see the Punya Theerthas ,not knowing that where Bhagawans stuthies are chanted, all
the Divya Kshetras and Divya Theerthas assemble to give their blessings.

Moral of the story:

So our Gurus say that the God can not be seen by our mortal eyes and even if sound is Brahmam,
Natha Brahmam, it can not be heard by our physical ears.

mukam karoti vacalam

pangum langhayate girim
yat krpa tam aham vande
sri gurum dina-taranam

It is possible if we become obedient student of guru, then even though we may be dumb, deaf
and dumb, still, we can become good lecturer. Mukam karoti vacalam, talk very much about
Krsna. This is Krsnas grace, mukam karoti Pangum langhayate girim, if one is lame man, he
is made to cross over the hill, mountain. This is the mercy of guru.

So bhakti, or cultivation of spiritual knowledge, is never subjected by any material things.

Ahaituky apratihata. No material thing can check us in our progress in Krsna consciousness. It is
not possible. Simply follow the instruction of Krsna consciousness, man-mana bhava mad-
bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Follow the rules and regulations and everything
will be clear, very crystal clear. There will be no impediment.

True stories: Encounters with Yamadutas 1 part

Story 1

One day a very freakish artist came to Iskcon Sochi temple with Sri Isopanisad in his hand and
told devotees his story:

I was looking for you, people, for three days and I am unbelievably glad I have finally found
you.
One day I bought this book (he couldnt even name its name and author, Srila Prabhupada, but
only stammered something) and tried to read it.

But it was very difficult to understand, so many strange words.

Therefore I put it on the shelf and cared no more about it.

I was drinking lot of alcohol.

One day while lying drunk in my bed I heard strange voices nearby.

It was something absolutely new.

I was looking for the source and saw two persons indistinctly.

They were speaking about me about my life and how sinful it was.

They were recounting all my sins in great detail which I even didnt remember and also a few
good things.

Finally they came to conclusion: He must go to hell!

I was screaming in protest: I dont want to hell and dont know what is going on at all.

But anyway, at once one of them put a stringent rope on my neck.

I tried to get rid of it and run away but to no avail the rope was very tight.

I was almost finished but suddenly a cover picture of this book (Sri Isopanisad with Lord Kesava
and Sesa Naga) appeared before my eyes.

It was actually not picture but reality.

The snake was moving and out of sudden a flame emanated from his many mouths.

Totally bewildered about it I asked those persons what does it all mean?

They answered: This is just the hell where you are going to go.

But all of sudden everything disappeared and I awoke in my bed, completely shocked.

Immediately I stopped drinking and smoking and tried to find you, devotees, to find explanation
about all of this. I beg on my knees, let me stay here somewhere!

( Story by Vaidyanatha Das )

Moral of the story:

1. This story refutes the scientists theory that ones NDE is influenced by his/her cultural
background Easterners are supposed to have different experiences than Westerners.

2. We are all responsible for our actions and will enjoy or suffer results from them.

Story 2 ( Encounter in a Dream )

Before I joined temple I have been reading Prabhupadas books like anything sometimes for
hours a day and I developed a deep appreciation for them.

At that time I still lived in my rented flat whose owner was one woman living together with her
daughter.

This girl was a heavy drug addict and often when she had nightmares her screams would wake
me up.

One night I was awaken by her particularly horrible screaming.

I looked at my watch it was 0:30 AM.

Knowing that this time is notorious for its inauspiciousness I was a bit afraid and confused.

But then I fell asleep again and in my dream I saw coming to me a strange figure looking like a
devil dark, with big ears and carrying a stick or something similar in its hand.

It was looking at me and laughing, Oh, you read these books! Ho, ho, ho! and pointed at my
Bhagavatam lying beside my bed on a table.

At once I realized that I cannot do anything but if Krsna is in the hearts of all the living beings
He can protect me.

Thus I got a feeling of security.

At that moment the dream stopped and I slept peacefully for the rest of the night. This incident
even deepened my faith in Srila Prabhupadas books.
