the Zanzibar presidency for
the fourth time after failed
attempts in 1995, 2000 and
2005.
The nomination of Mr
Kikwete and subsequent
selection of Dr Bilal as his
running mate was an elaborate
affair at the Kizota Conference
Hall.
Hundreds of delegates
dressed in the party’s green
and yellow colours thronged
the venue. Some blew
vuvuzelas in keeping with the
spirit of the World Cup, whose
final was played last night in
Johannesburg.
Earlier, the NEC endorsed
Mr Kikwete as CCM’s candidate
after 1,893 of the delegates
in attendance voted in his
favour, which is 99.16 per cent
of the 1,909 votes cast. Sixteen
delegates voted ‘No’.
In his brief remarks before
delegates voted, Mr Kikwete
told the meeting of “CCM's
enemies”, who were out to
bring the party down.
He said some diplomats in
cahoots with individuals he
did not name were involved
in a clandestine campaign to
undermine the party.

Dr Shein said he took heart
in knowing that he had the
backing of Zanzibar leaders
who preceded him, and paid
tribute to Mr Kikwete for his
unwavering support.
He said his priorities
included safeguarding the
1964 Revolution, strengthening
the union between Zanzibar
and Tanzania Mainland and
consolidating reconciliation
among Zanzibaris.
The CCM candidate
said he would continue
to steer Zanzibar along the
development path devised by
Mr Karume.
Dr Shein said the people
of Zanzibar had suffered for
too long as a result of political
wrangling, adding that he would
work closely with Mr Kikwete
and other stakeholders to find
more avenues through which
the local economy could be
boosted.

tenure, which ends in October.
He also thanked Tanzanians
for rallying behind him, and
promised to work closely
with them after retiring from
Zanzibar’s highest office.

He said MPs must be honest and
open when performing activities in
their constituencies, especially during
this time when the country heads to
the General Election in October.
“I think we must be open
when doing our activities in the
constituencies. I think MPs must
provide these gifts openly; let the
gifts be provided during community
meetings; prepare agendas and call
the meetings and then hand over
those gifts to the community,” said
Speaker Sitta. According to him,
there was no need for an MP who
has a good intention to donate gifts
to voters at night.
