1st Grade Hall of the Mountain King Lesson

Objectives:
Students will sing the greeting with correct pitches and rhythm
Students will perform the rhythms (quarter note, eighth note pairs) in In the Hall of the
Mountain King through speaking and body percussion.
Students will perform the rhythms in In the Hall of the Mountain King through
movement
Students will create their own movement/choreography to In the Hall of the Mountain
King
Students will sing the goodbye song with correct pitches and rhythm

Standards being Addressed:


MU:Re7.2.1a With limited guidance, demonstrate and identify how specific music
concepts (such as beat or pitch) are used in various styles of music for a purpose.
MU:Cr1.1.1a With limited guidance, create musical ideas (such as answering a musical
question) for a specific purpose.
MU:Cr2.1.1a With limited guidance, demonstrate and discuss personal reasons for
selecting musical ideas that represent expressive intent.

Materials of Instruction:
Recording of In the Hall of the Mountain King
Scarves/ribbons

Lesson Sequence:
Introduction: Students will sing the greeting with correct pitches and rhythm

Activity #1: Students will perform the rhythms (quarter note, eighth note pairs) in In the Hall
of the Mountain King through speaking and body percussion.

1. Greet Ss at the door, ask them to sit one their circles


2. T begins telling the story of Peer Gynt to Ss
3. T speaks
Monster monster monster troll, monster troll, monster troll
Monster monster monster monster, monster monster troll
(Repeat if necessary)
4. Ss echoes
5. Repeat steps if necessary
6. T instructs Ss to Watch me, then come in when you know it
7. Ss joins when ready
8. Ss completes task, T provides feedback/refines

Transition: T: Remember those words because we will use them later! But now instead of
using just our hands, can we use our feet and faces too? Ss responds

Activity #2: Students will aurally identify the rhythms in In the Hall of the Mountain King
through a movement activity

1. T instructs Ss the expectations of movement activities


Staying on their circle standing
Not touching their classmates or objects around the room
Not yelling/being loud
Being respectful
2. T instructs Ss to watch her then join when theyre ready
3. Ss and T begin moving to music but only in circles
4. T asks Ss:
What did you notice from beginning to end?
Why do you think it got faster?

Transition/closure: T: Great work today, 1st graders! Remember what we did today because
we will do something with this music next time!

Activity #3 (Day 2 if not enough time): Students will create their own movement/choreography
to In the Hall of the Mountain King using scarves and ribbons
1. T greets Ss at the door
2. T and Ss sing greeting song
3. T asks Ss what they remember from the last class (if we needed to split this lesson)
4. Ss responds
5. T refreshes Ss if needed
6. Review speaking Mon-ster troll rhythms
7. Review BP
8. Review circle movement
9. T provides instructions and expectations for the movement activity to Ss
Use scarves/ribbons appropriately
Dont touch classmates with props
If Ss dont follow these instructions, they will be asked to give back their props
and use their arms. If they still dont comply they will be asked sit out of the
circle and to not participate
10. T distributes ribbons/scarves and puts them on the ground (Ss doesnt touch them)
11. T shows different ideas for Ss to experiment with
12. T asks Ss to watch and use arms first. T get them to start/stop together
13. Attempt with props
14. T instructs Ss to imagine what they want to do first (they only listen to the recording)
T instructs Ss to show the monster troll rhythms
T gives a few idea or options
15. T plays the recording a second time while Ss respond through movement with props
T instructs Ss to show the monster troll rhythms
