Classroom Setup

Classroom: Khun Observer: Natasha Towns

Grade: 1st Date:10/19/2017
Curriculum Area: Time:11:34

My teachers classroom is set up the way it is due to the limited amount of space she
has. She grouped her students desk together to condense the amount of space they would take
up at their seats. She also had to leave space for students to go in and out of the in room
bathroom which is located on the left hand side of the room. Also, she needed to allow for
room for the mat in the front of the classroom, which is where half of her teachings takes
place. Her desk is located right beside the mat directly at the front beside the entrance to her
classroom. She condensed the students desks in the middle of the classroom but she has
enough space between each of the tables to allow for traffic around their seats. In the back
right of the classroom, my teacher has her library and her table where she conducts her testing
on students reading progress. Although this is not how I would set up my classroom, it is not
a bad set up at all. She made her room spacious and effective for her. It was still very lively
and allowed for the teacher to be anywhere in the classroom and see all of her students.
Overall, my teachers classroom was effective for the amount of space she was given and
would be a setup I would use if I had to.

What I notice Thoughts, Questions, Connections to

Methods Classes
- How did my CE choose this book when
her students read and comprehend at
different levels?
- Teacher was engaging and animated
with students, similar to how my READ
professor instructed us to be
- Teacher allowed for discussion at
random times, how does she choose
which times to talk about?
- Teacher walked around class gathering
formative assessment which majority of
IMB classes talk about.
- Teacher went over the assignment with
the class after they finished.
- Does she only do this for assignments
that dont get graded?
Reflection

On October 19th, I witnessed my clinical teacher in action for the first time and was completely

amazed by what I saw. She transitioned from their morning work into their literacy lesson

flawlessly. She started her lesson by reminding students what they had been working on

previously and then she began to read the book, Miss Nelson is Missing. She was so

animated as she read the book and captured everybodys interest, including mine, as she read.

She would stop reading sometimes and ask students questions that made them think about

what was happening in the story. The kids were literally squirming with excitement and so

engrossed in the book that when the story was over they were disappointed. She then referred

back to the notes they had taken together prior to my arrival and had the students describe the

traits of the main character together. Then she used one of her classroom management tools,

Oogie Boogie Boo and regrouped and silenced the kids to inform them what the next part of

the lesson was. She had them return to their desk by the rows they are in on the mat and write

in their writing journals the setting of the story and how they know that this is the setting.

Even though her lesson was simple, it was very engaging. This was the very first lesson I

witnessed her teaching and I was immediately in awe of her. Her students listened to

everything she told them to do, which showed me that her classroom management and

discipline techniques work. Overall, after witnessing her teach this literacy lesson I knew that

she was a teacher I could see me coming back to asking for advice or simply observing again

just to learn from her.
