MARIANE KATHERINE C. PRCEPTION OF PERAA COMPANY
EMPLOYEES ON
THEIR SECURITY IN USING IOT (TEAMVIEWER SOFTWARE)
Research Adviser: Mr. Jude Patrick F. Cabading

This research aimed to assess the knowledge of employees, who are exposed

with the use of the IoT software, with knowing the perception of PERAA company

employees on their security in using IoT (TeamViewer Software)

The researchers conducted an interview with the employees to gather the

needed information to solve their research problems. The first part of the interview

questions identified the description of the employees about their usage of the IoT

software. The second part found out the IoT software users opinions about the usage

of IoT software. The third determined the suggestions of the employees on how will

the company control their privacy when using the IoT software. The last part

determined the possible consequences that the future IoT software users will face in

using the IoT software.

The data were presented in a table and were analyzed using coding, content

and discourse analysis.

It has been determined that majority of PERAA company employees, who

are using IoT (TeamViewer Software), have been experiencing beneficial outcomes

in their performances. Also, they had experienced positive effects to their work. The
iv
Integrated Basic Education Department

most common effect on their work was the increase in efficiency and accuracy of

their work. Although, nothing is perfect as they say, IoT still has room for

improvement. One aspect that they pointed out is its security.

It is therefore recommended that companies should use the IoT software, due

to the benefits and convenience that the IoT software gives to improve the

performance of the employees.

The email that the employees are using in the company must be different from

their personal email to avoid exposing their personal details or information. The

company must have seminars about the usage of IoT Software so that the employees

will be much more knowledgeable and more aware of the usage of IoT softwares.

The employees must not give their full trust to the IoT software. The people

behind IoT software still needs to improve their work by developing the security and

privacy of IoT software. The people behind IoT software must give direct policies

on how to implement and use IoT software. Finally, for the future researchers who

will conduct a study about the usage of IoT software, they should have different sets

of respondents from different companies in the Philippines and the respondents must

be professional IT and must be fully aware of IoT.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Background of the Study

In this current era, technology is widely used, most especially in industries.

The establishment of Internet of Things (IoT) has become a part of technology.

According to Cisco, IoT represents the next evolution of the Internet, taking a huge

leap in its ability to gather, analyze, and distribute data that we can turn into

information, knowledge, and, ultimately, wisdom. In this context, IoT becomes

immensely important.

According to Internet Society, IoT contains five issue areas that interferes

with its use. The five issue areas are security, privacy, interoperability and standards;

legal, regulatory and rights and emerging economies and development. Poorly

secured IoT devices and services can serve as potential entry points for cyber-attack

and expose user data to theft by leaving data streams inadequately protected.

In order to figure out a way to solve these security issues that are being

experienced today, recognition of the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of the IoT is

significant. Grasping information regarding the thoughts of the IoT users security

and privacy when they use the IoT software will be used as significant data. The IoT

users will state the needed and suggested improvements for the IoT software. IoT

developing companies will therefore be able to identify the needed improvements

and developments for their next projects.

2
Integrated Basic Education Department

Since development and enhancement of IoT is fundamental, these concepts

made the researchers decide to conduct a research about the in order to avoid any

future issues. The improvement of the IoT will advantageous for IoT users, because

they will be able to receive additional information about the usage of IoT. Also, they

will be able to identify the significance of the background of IoT, which will increase

their awareness to avoid any possible and future issues in the usage of the IoT.

Thus, this study proposes to ensure that security in IoT products and services

must be a fundamental priority. The researchers will collect the required data in order

to complete this study for the benefit of the current and future IoT users, in terms of

security. Motivation on the enhancement of IoT will fall to the IoT developing and

building companies for their own beneficial and business purposes. The IoT users

will once again reclaim their right to security and privacy.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to assess the knowledge of employees, who are exposed

with the use of the IoT software. Specifically, it aims to:

1. Identify the description of the employees about their usage of the IoT

software;

2. find out the IoT software users opinions about the usage of the IoT software;

3. determine the suggestions of the employees on how will the company control

their privacy when using the IoT software; and

3
Integrated Basic Education Department

4. explore the possible consequences that future IoT software users will face in

using the IoT software.

This research will answer the following questions:

1. What is the description of the employees about their usage of the IoT

software?

2. What are the IoT software users opinions about the usage of the IoT

software?

3. What are the employees suggestions on how will the company control their

privacy when using the IoT software?

4. What are the possible consequences that future IoT software users will face

in using this kind of software?

Theoretical Framework

Theory of Security

Security is the state of being protected from an attack. Kurtus (2012)

Theory of Security holds ways to identify possible attacks that people might

experience. He also mentioned ways on how to be aware of the motivations of an

attack and the relationship to those motivations. Because of obtaining security,

attackers are having difficulties on making an attack to their prey. Security also

provides countermeasures of attacks from the source of threat.

The theory provides the following questions, which serves as a lead for the

researchers:
4
Integrated Basic Education Department

1. What the possible attacks?

2. What should be done about these threats?

3. What type of defense is needed?

This theory presents a guideline of possible attacks, which is the motivation

behind it and the relation of that motivation to the researchers. The Theory of

Security is related to the study, because the researchers aim to enhance the

capabilities of the IoT. This gives a new perspective on finding weaknesses and

vulnerabilities that can be improved. The researchers are aiming to increase the

difficulty of hacking the system of IoT, to avoid any future cyber-attacks.

Nudge Theory

Most parents in this world do what is best for their children. Usually,

mothers nag at their children about what and not to do for the sake of their childrens

benefits. What if the pokes and prods that humans receive are developing, for them

to have a better well-being? Although, these developments are not coming from

nagging mothers anymore, who care for their childrens well-being, but from

programmed gadgets in Silicon Valley.

The idea from nagging mothers to nagging devices is the promise and threat

of the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT created nagging devices from wearable devices,

such as fitness bands, to smart home gadgetry, such as connected weighing scales

and fridges. The point to this theory is that when an IoT user uses his/her fitness

band, which is an IoT device, the device will count the users steps and inspire
5
Integrated Basic Education Department

him/her to walk more. Another idea is, in the future, the IoT users weighing scale

will notify his/her fridge that the IoT user is already above his/her weight goal. The

fridge will also add some other notifications such as suggesting a salad for dinner

rather than pizza, even if it is a mood boosting treat that the person need after a

stressful day.

Chuter (2015) discussed in his theory if is it really better to be notified by

an application? An example of this is when someone arrives home and then a device

will automatically notify the owner of the property details such as who entered

his/her property and what time did the person entered his/her home. Are such

automated notifications better than receiving a message from peoples loved ones

like, Im home? Humans desire for convenience also removed their effort for

social interactions.

In relation to this study, this theory implies that though human beings are

living conveniently, comfortably and healthy, they might not be able to get

everything they need. It is significant to this study, because IoT can potentially

replace everyone in an individuals life from their doctors, even up to their parents.

There are two theories that was stated in the study; The Theory of Security

which explains the possible countermeasures of attacks from any source of threats in

using IoT and the Nudge Theory which explains how IoT can replace the effort of a

person for social interactions. IoT is a modern and an advance technology that was
6
Integrated Basic Education Department

created in this generation, but it still needs to develop and upgrade. IoT can change

a persons life for the better or for worse depending on how they use it.

Therefore, these two theories can be used and applied in the study because

it can help the IoT developers create a better and a much more improved IoT

softwares and devices that will benefit the IoT users.

Scope and Limitations

The IoT is becoming increasingly well known in this current generation. IoT

is the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday

objects, enabling them to send and receive data. IoT is currently being used in

different and several companies for business and beneficial purposes. The

respondents of this study are the employees of PERAA, who are using the IoT

software, which is TeamViewer. The researchers will conduct questions that will be

asked during the interview with the respondents. Another type of data collection,

which is observation, will also be done by the researchers, who will the interviewees

of the appointment.

This study will only focus on the employees of the company, PERAA, who

are using the IoT software, which is TeamViewer. A letter will be composed by the

researchers before the date of the appointment, in order to gain permission and access

in the company. The researchers will collect their required data in less than 24 hours.

The coverage of this study only focuses on the perception of the PERAA employees,

who are using TeamViewer, in terms of their security and privacy.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies;

Internet of Things

Description of Internet of Things

Rouse (2016) described IoT or Internet of things as a system of interrelated

computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that

are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data user to a network.

Abek (2009) discussed that a network device is an individual component of the

network that participates at one or more of the protocol layers. This includes end

devices, routers, switches, data service units (DSUs), hubs, and network interface

cards (NICs).

Definition of IoT. The term Internet of Things mainly refers to network

connectivity and computing capability extends to objects, sensors and everyday

items not normally considered computers, allowing these devices to generate

exchange and consume data with minimal human intervention, but according to

Rouse (2016) internet of things has no single, universal definition.

Current status of IoT. Krell (2017) explained that due to the rapid growth of

IoT users, IoT is almost required. For the Internet of Things (IoT), 2017 will be

another year of growthand potentially some contraction according to analysist. IoT

is still in its infancy in terms of dollars and deployments, and that cant last much
13
Integrated Basic Education Department

longer, before market frustration sets in. 2016 was a foundational year for IoT, and

2017 must become the year where humans focus on real deployment and

monetization of IoT systems, including both software and hardware. Analysist

discovered a broad range of IoT trials in 2016, and in 2017 these must become real

live systems that increase productivity, increase customer satisfaction and develop

new revenue streams.

Types of IoT. Tutorials Point (2017) discussed the two types of IoT, which

are IoT Software and Hardware. within the system, users can achieve deeper

automation, analysis, and integration through IoT system. They improve the reach of

these areas and their accuracy. IoT utilizes existing and emerging technology for

sensing, networking, and robotics. IoT exploits recent advances in software, falling

hardware prices, and modern attitudes towards technology. Its new and advanced

elements bring major changes in the delivery of products, goods, and services; and

the social, economic, and political impact of those changes.

IoT Hardware. The Tutorials Point (2017) also discussed about the types of

IoT hardware which are sensors, wearable electronics and standard devices. The

most important hardware in IoT might be its sensors. These devices includes energy

modules, power management modules, RF modules, and sensing modules. RF

modules manage communications through their signal processing, WiFi, ZigBee,

Bluetooth, radio transceiver, duplexer, and BAW. These sensors are used for data

collection. The physical objects that are being connected will possess one or more
14
Integrated Basic Education Department

sensors. In IoT, these sensors will connect to each other and to systems that can

understand or present information from the sensors data feeds. These sensors will

provide new information to a companys systems and to people. Wearable electronic

are devices that are being worn on the head, neck, arms, torso and feet. The current

smart wearable devices include Helmets, glasses, watches, wristbands, jewelry,

backpacks, socks, shoes and many more. The desktop, tablet and cellphone remain

integral parts of IoT as the command center and remote. They are standard devices

of the IoT. The desktop provides the user with the highest level of control over the

system and its settings. While the tablet gives access to the key features of the system

in a way resembling the desktop, and also acts as a remote. And the cellphone allows

some essential settings modification and also provides remote functionality.

IoT Software. Through platforms, embedded systems, partner systems, and

middleware, IoT Software addresses its key areas of networking and action. real-time

analytics, and application and process extension within the IoT network. They

exploit integration with critical business systems (e.g., ordering systems, robotics,

scheduling, and more) in the execution of related tasks, discussed Tutorials Point

(2017).

Historical Background of IoT

Press (2014) explained that there have been visions of smart, communicating

objects even before the global computer network was launched forty-five years ago.

As the Internet has grown to link all signs of intelligence (i.e., software) around the
15
Integrated Basic Education Department

world, a number of other terms associated with the idea and practice of connecting

everything to everything have made their appearance, including machine-to-machine

(M2M), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), context-aware computing,

wearables, ubiquitous computing, and the Web of Things. Here are a few milestones

in the evolution of the mashing of the physical with the digital.

Evolution of IoT. An article from I-Scoop (2016) explained that despite of

all the challenges, different speeds and the fast evolutions which we will see until the

first years of the next decade, the Internet of Things is here. In business and industry,

there are thousands of Internet of Things use cases and real-life IoT deployments

across a variety of sectors with the three industries which they just mentioned

accounting for a more than significant part of deployments and investments. In the

IoT consumer space (consumer IoT was the fourth largest segment in 2016) there are

many thousands of devices and applications for a broad variety of purposes. The

Internet of Things is a major force among the many phenomena and related

technologies that show exponential growth in recent years and (will) result in digital

transformation (initiatives).

Comparison of IoT from then to today. Tozzi (2016) discussed that the

event, device manufacturers put little stock in an RFID-based IoT. He also mentioned

that by June 2000, the world's first Internet-connected refrigerator, the LG Internet

Digital DIOS, had appeared featuring a LAN port for IP connectivity. (The fridge

had been under development since 1997, showing that the idea if not the name for
16
Integrated Basic Education Department

IoT existed well before Ashton introduced the term in 1999.) The concept expanded

and saw more real-world implementation as the 2000s continued. In 2008 the IPSO

Alliance formed as a collaboration of industry partners interested in promoting

connected devices. That was a sign that big businesses, not just entrepreneurs and

researchers, were growing interested in implementing IoT in production

environments.

Significance of IoT

Furthermore, IoT is said to be the future of industries because this will allow

the consumers, businesses and even an entire cities to run more efficiency.

Beneficiaries of IoT. I-Scoop (2016) mentioned that IoT is said to be the

future of industries because this will allow the consumers, businesses and even an

entire cities to run more efficiency. IoT has been beneficial throughout the years. The

beneficiaries of Internet of things (IoT) will be families and individuals in a home in

terms of their home security, Hospitals and personal wellness (health), Consumers

and Business.

Convenience of IoT. Furthermore, IoT had provided convenience for humans

in order to complete a certain task. It has contributed a more easy and effortless way

of life. Tutorials Point (2017) enumerated and explained the significance of IoT, in

terms of convenience.

Improved customer engagement. An article about the convenience of IoT,

Tutorials Point discussed that current analytics suffer from blind-spots and
17
Integrated Basic Education Department

significant flaws in accuracy; and as noted, engagement remains passive. IoT

completely transforms this to achieve richer and more effective engagement with

audiences.

Technology optimization. The same technologies and data which improve the

customer experience also improve device use, and aid in more potent improvements

to technology. IoT unlocks a world of critical functional and field data.

Reduced waste. IoT makes areas of improvement clear. Current analytics give

us superficial insight, but IoT provides real-world information leading to more

effective management of resources.

Enhanced data collection. Modern data collection suffers from its limitations

and its design for passive use. IoT breaks it out of those spaces, and places it exactly

where humans really want to go to analyze our world. It allows an accurate picture

of everything.

IoT Issues

IoT has given solutions to several problems throughout the years, however

there are also issues that cannot be avoided such as in terms of security, privacy, and

rights. The Internet Society (2017) expounded about the security issues of the IoT.

Security. While security considerations are not new in the context of

information technology, the attributes of many IoT implementations present new and

unique security challenges. Addressing these challenges and ensuring security in IoT

products and services must be a fundamental priority. Users need to trust that IoT
18
Integrated Basic Education Department

devices and related data services are secure from vulnerabilities, especially as this

technology become more pervasive and integrated into our daily lives. Poorly

secured IoT devices and services can serve as potential entry points for cyber-attack

and expose user data to theft by leaving data streams inadequately protected. Internet

Society also presented the privacy issues from IoT products.

Privacy. The full potential of the Internet of Things depends on strategies that

respect individual privacy choices across a broad spectrum of expectations. The data

streams and user specificity afforded by IoT devices can unlock incredible and

unique value to IoT users, but concerns about privacy and potential harms might hold

back full adoption of the Internet of Things. This means that privacy rights and

respect for user privacy expectations are integral to ensuring user trust and

confidence in the Internet, connected devices, and related services. Indeed, the

Internet of Things is redefining the debate about privacy issues, as many

implementations can dramatically change the ways personal data is collected,

analyzed, used, and protected. For example, IoT amplifies concerns about the

potential for increased surveillance and tracking, difficulty in being able to opt out

of certain data collection, and the strength of aggregating IoT data streams to paint

detailed digital portraits of users. While these are important challenges, they are not

insurmountable. In order to realize the opportunities, strategies will need to be

developed to respect individual privacy choices across a broad spectrum of

19
Integrated Basic Education Department

expectations, while still fostering innovation in new technology and services. IoT

users also experienced issues about their rights.

Rights. The use of IoT devices raises many new regulatory and legal

questions as well as amplifies existing legal issues around the Internet. Internet

Society (2017) further discussed that questions are wide in scope, and the rapid rate

of change in IoT technology frequently outpaces the ability of the associated policy,

legal, and regulatory structures to adapt. One set of issues surrounds crossborder data

flows, which occur when IoT devices collect data about people in one jurisdiction

and transmit it to another jurisdiction with different data protection laws for

processing. Further, data collected by IoT devices is sometimes susceptible to

misuse, potentially causing discriminatory outcomes for some users. Other legal

issues with IoT devices include the conflict between law enforcement surveillance

and civil rights; data retention and destruction policies; and legal liability for

unintended uses, security breaches or privacy lapses. While the legal and regulatory

challenges are broad and complex in scope, adopting the guiding Internet Society

principles of promoting a users ability to connect, speak, innovate, share, choose,

and trust are core considerations for evolving IoT laws and regulations that enable

user rights. Uncovering solutions in order to solve these issues are significant.

Significance of Secuirty, Privacy, and Rights of the IoT users. While

security considerations are not new in the context of information technology, the

attributes of many IoT implementations present new and unique security challenges.
20
Integrated Basic Education Department

From the source, Tutorials Point (2017) it presented that addressing these challenges

and ensuring security in IoT products and services must be a fundamental priority.

Users need to trust that IoT devices and related data services are secure from

vulnerabilities, especially as this technology become more pervasive and integrated

into our daily lives. Poorly secured IoT devices and services can serve as potential

entry points for cyber-attack and expose user data to theft by leaving data streams

inadequately protected.

TeamViewer

Description of TeamViewer

Beal (2017) described TeamViewer as popular piece of software used for

Internet-based remote access and support. TeamViewer software can connect to any

PC or server, so you can remote control your partner's PC as if you were sitting right

in front of it. For the remote session to work the partner has to start a small

application, which does not require installation or administrative rights.

History of Team Viewer. TeamViewer (2016), it discussed that TeamViewer

launched in 2005. TeamViewer, an IoT software, focuses on cloud-based

technologies to enable online support and collaborate in real time across the globe.

Remote support, remote access, and online collaboration are not mere buzzwords.

They represent helping people, better integrating technology into our daily lives, and

creating new ideas. The TeamViewer developers believe that wonderful things

happen when people get together, and technology should make this possible for them
21

from anywhere in the world. It should act as a catalyst to promote and amplify

peoples ideas and their ability to solve issues and overcome challenges. People have

collectively used the technology from TeamViewer in billions of instances where

distance and time would have otherwise prevented them from accomplishing their

goals.

Purpose of TeamViewer. Cameyo (2015) stated the purpose of TeamViewer

as a proprietary computer software package for remote control, desktop sharing,

online meetings, web conferencing and file transfer between computers.

Private Education Retirement Annuity Association (PERAA)

Usage of IoT in the company

The employees in the company, PERAA, are known to be IoT users. The

employees use an IoT software, which is TeamViewer, for online collaboration and

remote support. The IoT software enables the employees to access their emails even

if they are out of the office, especially when they need it immediately (W. Anson,

personal communication, July 27, 2017).

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses about the process, by which the study was conducted.

It deals with the description of the research design, respondents of the study, locale

of the study, data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure, sampling

technique, and statistical statement.

Research Design

A qualitative research design was used in the study. This design was used in

order to identify the perceptions of the employees, who are using the IoT software

(TeamViewer), in the PERAA company.

The researchers aligned themselves with a qualitative type of research, which

is the case study. This type of research method suits this study due to its combination

of methods, such as conducting interviews and visiting places to determine the

situation of the participants on what is being examined. The method is used to

examine the set of employees on their usage of the IoT software. The method is also

used with success in carefully planned and craft studies of real-life situations, issues,

and problems. Reports on case studies from many disciplines are widely available in

the literature.

The independent variable in this study were the employees, who are using the

IoT software (TeamViewer), in the PERAA company. The employees are not
23
Integrated Basic Education Department

affected by other variables that the researchers are trying to measure. They are the

condition of the study that is systematically manipulated by the researchers.

Locale of the study

This study was conducted in Private Education Retirement Annuity

Association (PERAA) Company. It is located in the 16th floor of Multinational

Bancorporation Centre, 6805 Ayala Avenue, Salcedo Village in Makati City

The PERAA Company was formally organized on September 2, 1972 with

the signing of the Trust Agreement. There were 22 founding members of PERAA

though only 14 institutions, who braved the gloomy weather, made it that night.

Established as a private, non-profit, employees' trust under the auspices of Fund for

Assistance to Private Education, PERAA is the first comprehensive retirement

program in the country. It was modeled after the Teachers Insurance Annuity

Association - College Retirement Equity Fund or TIAA-CREF (the multi-billion

dollar retirement system for teachers in the U.S.).

Today, it has evolved into a solid, self-reliant association. PERAA remains

true to its mission of strengthening retirement security among human resources of

private education.

Respondents

In this study, the researchers used the employees of the company, PERAA,

as their respondents. Only selected employees of PERAA were chosen to be the

24
Integrated Basic Education Department

participating respondents in this study, due to their usage of an IoT software. These

chosen respondents has become a group of participating respondents in this research.

This group of respondents consist of nineteen (17) employees or IoT users.

The respondents will come from the different departments of the company. In the

Information Technology and Administration Department, there are four (4)

respondents, in the Executive Department, there is only one (1) respondent, in the

Investment Services Department, there is only one (1) respondent, in the Accounting

Department, there are two (2) respondents, in the Member Services Department,

there are two (2) respondents, in the Institutional Relations Services Department that

are six (6) respondents, and in the Human Resources Department, this is only one (1)

respondent.

In the group of respondents, it consist of gentlemen and women. In the

Information Technology and Administration Department, there are two (2) female

and are two (2) male respondents, in the Executive Department, there is only one (1)

female respondent, in the Investment Department, there is only one (1) female and

one (1) male respondents, in the Accounting Department, there is only one (1) female

and one (1) male respondent, in the Member Service Department, there is only one

(1) male respondent and one (1) female respondent, in the Human Resources

Department, this is only one (1) male respondent, and in the Institutional Relations

Services Department, this are three (3) female and three (3) male respondents. In this
25
Integrated Basic Education Department

group, it consist the total of nine (9) women and eight (8) gentlemen, whose ages

ranges from twenty-five to fifty (21-43) years old.

Sampling Techniques

Judgement sampling is employed, because the researchers wants to identify

the perception of IoT users to their security in using their IoT. The criteria has been

set by the researchers. The respondent must be an employee of the PERAA company

and uses an IoT software in their workplace. Therefore, the only people who can give

the researchers first hand narration are the ones who are working for PERAA and at

the same time, uses an IoT software in their workplace. The technique is to purposely

pick those people who are qualified in the criteria.

Research Instrumentation

The research instrumentation was utilized in the study of researchers that

helped the researchers improve and accomplish their research. The data gathering

instrument that was used in this study were interview questions. Interview questions

are questions that was given to the respondents that has helped the researchers attain

valuable insights.

Interview questions, consisting of four (4) parts with eleven (11) questions,

which was used to measure the perceptions of the employees.

The following parts of the tool were the following:

1. Awareness on the Usage of the IoT Software

26
Integrated Basic Education Department

Determining the description on the usage of the IoT Software is

significant, because the researchers want to know if the IoT users

in the company, who are their respondents, are aware of the IoT

Software that they are using. Knowing the affectivity of the

software to their work, their knowledge about the security of the

software, the benefits they have gained, and the obstacles that

they have experienced also fall in this part of the interview

questions.

2. Opinions About the Usage of the IoT Software

This part of the interview questions is about how the IoT users

see IoT software as and what could they say about it. It also

discusses the opinions of the employees about knowing that some

of their private information can been seen though the IoT that

they are using inside their company.

3. Suggestions on How Will the Company Control the Privacy on the

Usage of IoT

Since the employees are users of the IoT software, they have

acquired enough knowledge and experiences while using it. From

their experiences, the employees will be able to answer some

questions in this part of the interview questions about their

suggestions on how will the company control their privacy while

27
Integrated Basic Education Department

using the IoT software and their suggestion on the improvement

and development of the IoT software, in terms of security.

4. Possible Consequences That Future IoT Users Will Face

The respondents have might encountered the some advantages

and disadvantages of IoT software, based on what they have

gained and lost, they will be able to give some possible

consequences that the future IoT users might face in the future

and what should they be aware of the most. The given answers of

the respondents will be beneficial for the future IoT users.

After the construction these questions, this was followed by an interview with

and respondents. After gathering the collected responses of the respondents, the

researchers have attained the insights of the respondents about the research.

Data Gathering Procedure

First, the researchers gathered sources and related studies that was beneficial

in creating the questions needed for this study. References found in webpages and

online books (e-books) served as sources to support validity and rationality of the

study. The researchers based related information online, corresponding to the study

that focused more on innovation and technology. Thus, the researchers formulated a

problem that was transformed to questions for the structured interview to the

respondents.
28
Integrated Basic Education Department

Second, the researchers wrote and constructed a letter to the authorities who

are managing the company, PERAA, who are handling the qualified respondents

needed for the gathering of data. A letter to the respondents, as well, was given to

inform them that their shared answers will utilized in conducting the study.

Third, the researchers based their observations within the facilities and

offices inside the company of PERAA, as well as conducting the structured interview

to the employees that are exposed in using the IoT software.

After the obtained gathered data from the respondents of the company, who

cooperated with the given questions and prepared interview, the data was then

analyzed and interpreted to be presented in the research proposal.

Treatment of Data

1. Coding Qualitative Data

The data will be organized by the researchers. The codes serve as a way to

label, compile, and organize the gathered data. This treatment will enable the

researchers to summarize the happenings in the gathered information. In linking and

interpreting the data collection, the process of coding it becomes the basis for
30

developing the analysis. It will serve as an aid to the researchers in interpreting the

data.

2. Qualitative Discourse Analysis

The objects of discourse analysis (discourse, writing, conversation,

communicative event) are variously defined, in terms of coherent sequences

of sentences, propositions, speech, or turns-at-talk. Contrary to much of traditional

linguistics, discourse analysts not only study language use 'beyond the sentence

boundary', but also prefer to analyze 'naturally occurring' language use, not the

invented examples.

The table shows that majority of the employees, with a total of five responses

(29.41%) from the respondents, described the IoT software, through their knowledge,

that it is a network of actual devices. Ano siya is the network of actual devices,

vehicles, electronic software installed, responded an employee. Based on the of the

idea of Rouse (2016), he mentioned that IoT or Internet of Things as a system of

interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or

people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data user

to a network. His idea is parallel to the answer of the five respondents. Three answers

(17.65%) from the respondents described the IoT software as a remote that connects

to different devices. The answers of these respondents is associated to the idea of

Abek (2009), who discussed that a network device is an individual component of the

network that participates at one or more of the protocol layers. This includes end

devices, routers, switches, data service units (DSUs), hubs, and network interface

cards (NICs).

11.76% responses from the respondents shows that they believed that the IoT

software is something that allows the users to gather or exchange information.

An answer (5.88%) from a respondent shows that he/she believed that it is a

software that is being used to communicate through the internet. 5.88% (1

participant) shows that an employee mentioned that it is something that enabled them

to work at home. The advantage niya is we can work anywhere remotely, sometimes

(2016), it stated that IoT is said to be the future of industries because this will allow

the consumers, businesses and even entire cities to run a more efficient production.

IoT has been beneficial throughout the years. The beneficiaries of Internet of things

(IoT) will be families and individuals in a home in terms of their home security,

hospitals and personal wellness (health), consumers and business.

About 23.53% responses (4 responses) from the respondents shows that the

employees believed that the IoT software improves the accuracy of their work. With

the idea of Tutorials Point (2017), it stated that IoT systems allows users to achieve

deeper automation, analysis, and integration within a system and it improves the

reach of these areas and their accuracy. Because of the convenience of the IoT

software, some employees reported that the IoT software can affect their work by

improving the accuracy of their work and by enabling them to work from a far

distance away from their working area. In terms of the improvement of accuracy in

their work, the answer is linked with the idea of Tutorials Point (2017) that states

that IoT systems allow users to achieve deeper automation, analysis, and integration

within a system and it improves the reach of these areas and their accuracy. Some of

the respondents reported that the IoT software enables them to multitask, reduce the

allotment of time, and improves economic benefit in their work.

Three responses (17.65%) from the respondents shows that they described

the IoT software as something that allows them to work away from their working

place. 17.65% (3 responses) shows that the employees explained that it reduces their

allotment of time while doing their work.It improves accuracy, efficiency and

economic benefit from our work, the participants (11.76% or 2 responses)

responded. A response (5.88%) from a respondent shows that he/she believed that

the IoT software helps him/her to remote access other equipment and devices.

Based on the gathered information, the IoT software gives positive effects to

the employees to their work and service. Ahh it can affect my work ahh well

by the idea of the Tutorials Point (2017) stated that IoT exploits recent advances in

software, falling hardware prices, and modern attitudes towards technology. Its new

and advanced elements bring major changes in the delivery of products, goods, and

services; and the social, economic, and political impact of those changes. This means

that through the advanced and improved softwares and technology of IoT, security

was also updated that makes it more firm and more secured to use.

Four responses (23.53%) from the respondents shows that they described the

IoT software as something that requires a password or pin to gain access to it. As

23.53% (4 responses) shows that they believed that the security of the IoT

software is something that can be managed, which allows only legitimate users to

access to devices connected to the network. These responses about the IoT software

is parallel to the idea of Tutorials Point (2017) that stated that the IoT softwares

addresses its key areas of networking and action through platforms, embedded

systems, partner systems, and middleware, real-time analytics, and application and

process extension within the IoT network.

11.76% shows that the employees opinion about the usage of the IoT

software in their company is that it improved the exchanging of information with the

other departments. A respondent (5.88% or one response) responded that it enabled

him/her to quickly check the area or department that has complaints, without going

personally in that area. Hmm about yun usage na IoT software in our company,

mmm masnaiimprove lahat ng ginagawa kasi pag may mga reklamo especially na

IT department kaya na nilang ahh puntahan yun network without going personally

doon sa area naming, responded an employee.

Another respondent (5.88% or one response) mentioned that the usage of the

IoT software is risky, in terms of privacy, while a respondent (5.88% or 1 response)

has no idea about the usage of the IoT software in their company.

The table shows that opinions of the employees, knowing that their private

information, like mails can be seen by their company through the IoT. Majority of

the employees. 41.18% (7 responses) of the responses of the employees shows that

they didnt mind at all if the company could see their private information through the

IoT software. Umm dun naman sa bagay na yun okay naman yun as long as

ginagamit naman sa tama as long as di dinidesiminate sa ibang tao, responded an

employee.

17.65% (3 responses) of the employees answers shows that they believed

that the information are quite needed for the system to secure any connections for

their own benefit.

About 2 responses (11.76%) of the employees shows that they believed that

letting the company see their private information is one of the risks in using the IoT

software.Ahh yun na isa sa mga risk namin kasi uhm yun information

kadalasan pagganun mas ano tawag dito exposed sa ibang tao, responded one of

the employees. According to The Internet Society (2017), the full potential of the

Internet of Things depends on strategies that respect individual privacy choices

across a broad spectrum of expectations. The data streams and user specificity
48

afforded by IoT devices can unlock incredible and unique value to IoT users, but

concerns about privacy and potential harms might hold back full adoption of the

Internet of Things. This means that privacy rights and respect for user privacy

expectations are integral to ensuring user trust and confidence in the Internet,

connected devices, and related services. Although a respondent finds it normal, but

he/she believe thats the company must secure the given information.

There is one respondent (5.88%) who said believed that he/she doesnt have

their privacy anymore. Ay, yun nga wala nang privacy or wala nang mga makikita

nila yun mga confidential documents na hindi naman dapat ka gaya ng ibang

department pwede nilang makita yun mga ginagawa namin or mga yun kailangang

talagang isecured yun account, answered a respondent.

Another respondent (5.88%) believed that its normal but the company must

secure it properly. I think its normal naman pero sabihin ko yung mga information

na di dapat malaman ng iba must be secured talaga kasi baka gamitin pang block

mailing and so, answered a respondent. 17.65% (3 responses) of the employees

didnt gave their answer.

the respondents.

Another three responses (17.65%) from the respondents shows that they

suggested that there should be a leveling of information. My suggestion of privacy

use by other entities to distract other must be controlled and kept privately,

suggested one of the employees.

11.76% (2 responses) sshows that the company should limit the data that

they could access. A respondent (5.88%) mentioned that the company should

develop firewalls. The answer of the respondent is related to the idea of (LINK) that

a firewall is a program or device that acts as a barrier to keep destructive elements

out of a network or specific computer. Firewalls are configured (in hardware,

software, or both) with specific criteria to block or prevent unauthorized access to a

network. Another respondent (5.88%) mentioned that the company should continue

to improve the security, while two respondents (11.76%) were not able to answer the

question.

(6 responses or 35.29%) doesnt have any suggestions on the improvement and
development of the IoT software, in terms of security. Right now none. Kasi secured
na ako, answered a respondent.
However, five responses (29.41%) from the employees suggested the IoT

software should have more and better security measures. It ahh security measure

must be upgraded compared to that of the all system connection to aboard and

interactions, responded an employee.

A respondent (5.88%) mentioned that the IoT software should keep

confidential information confidential. 5.88% (1 response) shows that a respondent

believed that the IoT software should five control to every level of work. Another

response (5.88%) from a respondent suggested that the IoT software should have a

faster operation, while an employee (5.88%) had no answer to this question. Based

from the idea of The Internet Society (2017), it discussed that the Internet of Things

is redefining the debate about privacy issues, as many implementations can

dramatically change the ways personal data is collected, analyzed, used, and

protected. For example, IoT amplifies concerns about the potential for increased

surveillance and tracking, difficulty in being able to opt out of certain data collection,

and the strength of aggregating IoT data.

The table clearly shows the response, Hackers has the most frequent

answers (7 responses or 41.48%) from the employees. Uhm. Siguro yung mga

hackers padin yung mga ahh mabilis na magevolve yung ano natin yung technology

natin. Mabilis na siyang mahack ng mga hacker, stated a respondent. Based on the

idea od The Internet Society (2017), poorly secured IoT devices and services can

serve as potential entry points for cyber-attack and expose user data to theft by

leaving data streams inadequately protected. Internet Society also presented the

privacy issues from IoT products. This only means that the security of devices must

always be the top priority and concern of the IoT developers to avoid future security

issues. The full potential of the Internet of Things depends on strategies that respect

individual privacy choices across a broad spectrum of expectations, stated by The

Internet Society (2017).

There are individual and different responses (1 response or 5.88%), which

were mentioned by the employees. These responses from the employees are the

future IoT users should be aware of how to face the security and privacy threats, the

data they are sending, the public devices that they are using, mysterious new things,

the compliance of the IoT software, the capabilities of the IoT software, and that their

personal data can be observed. There is one respondent (5.88%) who didnt gave

his/her answer to the question.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary in the research conducted as well as the

conclusions and recommendations formulated by the researchers.

Summary

This research aimed to assess the knowledge of employees, who are exposed

with the use of the IoT software, with knowing the perception of PERAA company

employees on their security in using IoT (TeamViewer Software).

The researchers conducted an interview with the employees to gather the

needed information to solve their research problems. The first part of the interview

questions identified the awareness of the employees about their usage of the IoT

software. The second part, found out the IoT software users opinions about the usage

of IoT software. The third part, determined the suggestions of the employees on how

will the company control their privacy when using the IoT software, and the fourth

showed the possible consequences that future IoT software users will face in using

the IoT software.

The data were presented in a table and were analyzed using coding, content

and discourse analysis.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the majority of PERAA

company employees are knowledgeable about the IoT software and its security,
57
Integrated Basic Education Department

because most of the respodents were able to give their description about the IoT, such

as it is a network of actual devices, which is accurate. Due to the belief of majority

of the belief that the IoT software improves the effenciey and accuracy of their work,

it could also be concluded that majority of them received many advantages while

using the IoT software. Majority of the respondents gave positive feedback about

the IoT software, therefore, it is very useful and convenient to the work of the

employees. Several of the employees were not able to experience any security issues

while using the IoT software, which resulted that majority of the IoT users didnt

mind if the company could see their private information and they had no suggestions

on how will the company control their security nor for the IoT software to improve

or develop.

It could also be concluded that even though majority of the employees

havent experienced any security issues and based from the employees, who have

experienced security issues while using the software, future IoT users should be

aware of hackers, who could enter their systems. This warning is based on the

responses from majority of the employees and by the experience of a respondent,

while using the IoT software.

58
Integrated Basic Education Department

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions made, the researchers recommend the

following:

1. IoT software users should always be aware of their usage of the IoT software

and its security to avoid security attackers, such as hackers and identity theft.

2. Companies should use the IoT software, due to the benefits and convenience

that the IoT software gives to improve the performance of the employees.

3. Companies, which are using the IoT software, should hire trusted and

competent employees and should ensure that they have better security

measures to protect the personal information of the employees.

4. Future IoT users should be aware of compatibility issues and must beware of

hackers.

5. Future researchers, who will conduct a study that is related to this research

paper, should collect data from respondents of different companies.

APPENDIX D

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

Respondent 1

Q: What do you know about the IoT software?

A: Okay, IoT software is a software that communicate any all ahh. applicable

to all devices, digital and at ahh devices that are connected around the

connected to the internet. So for an example those PCs or servers or even your

mobile phones or CCTVs ahh capable of internet... ahhwith internet

feature that... ahhyou could use. So, when we talk about IoT mmm its

more on technical in Laymans term we normally treat it as... ahh... remote

connections to different devices, okay.

Q: How does the IoT software affect your work?

A: Specifically for the TeamViewer its kind of a useful software for us in IT

department because ahh as you could see TeamViewer is used to remote or

access any PC or servers ahh in a distant place like for example ahh a

certain person who was selected in the company will try to gain access on a server

files inside the office so that they would... ahh technically do that using

TeamViewer, okay. Now in our case ahh there are certain servers that are no

longer ahh being ano widely used or somehow it was already kept on a server

running but no longer used by PCs due to its ahh ahh what do you call this
67
Integrated Basic Education Department

one, because those servers are what we call legacy, holding legacy systems. We

are no longer ahh for those systems that are being a trend right there cannot be

ahh applied to modern PCs that we are using right now. So in order for us to

gain access or get data from that old system, we use TeamViewer to access them.

Q: Mmm. So, very convenient po siya?

A: Yes, yes quite ahh much faster compared to go to the actual server and get the

data itself. So its kinda big use if youre go- if you without TeamViewer, okay.

Q: What do you know about the security of the IoT software?

A: Well in terms of its security, its easily we call TeamViewer is ahh secured

enough, okay, because having an internet connection in different businesses or

organizations especially just like ahh the one that we have youre going to pass

through different ahh security measures or firewalls. So, nonetheless ahh its

a secured one because ahh passing through those different ahh securities are

quite ahh for unregistered softwares.

Q: What are the benefits that you gain while using the IoT software?

A: Well there is a lot of benefits that we have with the IoT especially right now Ive

been using TeamViewer as a free ahh software umm getting a licensed software

for this one is quite ahh.. its a costly software, okay and its terms of a ben-a-bena

benefits for our company, well ah everybody gets their actual data and process

real time provisions ahh faster than any other processing methods, okay.
68
Integrated Basic Education Department

Q: What are the obstacles that you have experienced while using the IoT software,

in terms of security?

A: In terms of its security, sometimes ahh if other, there are people working with

legitimate users outside umm being the point person inside the company you

dont know who are the persons or the people ahh along with the legitimate

users outside who is actually looking at the actual data inside. So you are blind

sided on that part, okay.

Q: What can you say about the usage of IoT software in your company?

A: Its a very big help for us because it makes our work easier, especially the case

that ah this company ahh even though we have an IT department, the softwares

that weve been using, the systems that weve been running for our data are

developed outside by a different company. Now, in order for them to check if

there are certain issues happening inside they usually do the remote connection so

that they could see ahh the problem without leaving yet getting to the other side,

okay.

Q: What are your suggestions on how will the company control your privacy when

using the IoT software?

A: Mmm. nonetheless ahh right now we dont have any issue on personal

information because most of the data that weve been using or weve been

accessing through this ahh TeamViewer are quite not really that confidential,
69
Integrated Basic Education Department

okay and its not that ahh expensive for other only it would would not ahh

give any benefit for mmm unregistered users, okay.

Q: What are your suggestions on the improvement and development of the IoT

software, in terms of security?

A: Ahh in terms of its improvement we dont look at any we dont ahh we dont

say anything about ahh improvement about that though certain issues right

when using TeamViewer is actually only slow connection, okay when you access

it will ahh accelerate when we put our person in front of the PC being remoted,

you will notice or even if ahh you try to open it from outside when you access

TeamViewer It gets slow ahh its resolution ahh resolutions or performance

is quite lower or slower compared to the quality because of the tight connection

problem. So I think thats the that one thats the things to be improved by

TeamViewer organization.

Q: What are the possible obstacles that future IoT users might face in the future?

A: Ahh in the future I think ahh the compatibility issues with regards to ahh

modern equipment and traditional or old equipments just like what happened to

Apple phones if you still have with your existing early versions like the iPhone 3

or 3S it can no longer be updated nor acs-ahh reformatted if you do it online

because of using update issue so ahh thats the big ahh role of handing an

online ahh technology so the they upgrade more we upgrade the more we have
70
Integrated Basic Education Department

made the equipped systems softwares online will technically the old devices are

getting ahh left behind, okay

Q: From your given possible obstacles, what should the future IoT users be aware of

the most?

A: Uhm that should be I think the best possible thing that the rest to come up with

is something like ahh more flexible update not just for the new devices that

should also be put into old ones, okay. Flexibility of updates if ever they will be

introducing new softwares or updates on date.

Respondent 2

Q: What do you know about the IoT software?

A: Mmm... The IoT software is a software na magagamit mo pa magagamit ng

organization to remote my network or other network anywhere.

Q: How does the IoT software affect your work?

A: Uhm nagiimprove yun pagiging efficient accur- nagiging accurate kami sa mga

ginagawa naming kasi mas nakakapagmultitask kami and nareremote pa yun iba

pa naming mga ginagawa haha okay.

Q: What do you know about the security of the IoT software?

A: As far as I know, meron siya binibigay na pin or password para makapasok sa

uhm network mo.

Q: What are the benefits that you gain while using the IoT software?
71
Integrated Basic Education Department

A: Uhm yun nga mas nagiging productive, naging accurate na kahit especially on

our job mas- uhm lumalabas kami so pag may mga kailangan pwede naming

maremote yun uhm yun network namin para makuha yun mga documents na

kailangan.

Q: What are the obstacles that you have experienced while using the IoT software,

in terms of security?

A: In terms of security, kasi nga pwede siyang mahack ng iba yun mga documents

or pwede pa siya makita ng iba na confidentiality na walang privacy yun mga

ginagawa naming or information.

Q: What can you say about the usage of IoT software in your company?

A: Hmm about yun usage na IoT software in our company, mmm

masnaiimprove lahat ng ginagawa kasi pag may mga reklamo especially na IT

department kaya na nilang ahh puntahan yun network without going personally

doon sa area naming.

Q: What is your opinion about knowing that some of your private information, like

mails, can be seen by your company through the IoT?

A: Ay, yun nga wala nang privacy or wala nang mga makikita nila yun mga

confidential documents na hindi naman dapat ka gaya ng ibang department pwede

nilang makita yun mga ginagawa namin or mga yun kailangang talagang isecured

yun account.
72
Integrated Basic Education Department

Q: What are your suggestions on how will the company control your privacy when

using the IoT software?

A: Ahh limitahan lang yun pwede nilang inetwork or buksan dun sa mga mga

documents na meron kami sa loob ng computers.

Q: What are your suggestions on the improvement and development of the IoT

software, in terms of security?

A: Ahh tighter security measures kailangan iupgrade at masidevelop pa.

Q: What are the possible obstacles that future IoT users might face in the future?

A: Ayun, ahh compatibility issues in technology shift kasi mabilis magchange

hindi naman lahat makakaadapt mga changes agad nito especially mga hindi

naman ganaaong kabataan or into technology.

Q: From your given possible obstacles, what should the future IoT users be aware of

the most?

A: Kailangan masaware sila kung paano mag maiiface yun security and privacy nung

organization kasi nga pagnahack to pwede naman pwede mag tulad dun sa bank
