- 4.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the derivative of a function as the slope of the tangent line to the
graph of the function.
-5.0 Students know the chain rule and its proof and applications to the calculation of the derivative of a variety of
composite functions.
-14.0 Students apply the definition of the integral to model problems in physics, economics, and so forth,
obtaining results in terms of integrals.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will learn to use calculus in a real situation such as rates, areas, volumes, acceleration, work, etc.
Students will also demonstrate the relationships between a functions graph and its derivatives and be able to
determine the critical points and explain how they do it.

Unit Summary:

I plan on teaching the basics of calculus at a high school level and later apply the contents to real world situations
where the students will be using calculus to find solutions (e.g. finding a volume of an odd shape). I also plan on
sharing the many techniques and rules of calculus to find the solutions to these problems. The students will be
able to use these methods interchangeably and, hopefully, will come natural to them in cases of problem solving.

Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level: Understanding a
function and its derivatives
and relationships to rates of
change.
Formative: Check point survey - this survey
will allow students to reflect on where they
stand on the lesson, whether or not they
need more help.
Quizlet - I designed a quizlet that my
students will be using and I will be adding
more to it as the class progresses, students
will have access to this playlist and use the
study tools that the website has to offer.
Summative: Math Jeopardy - The
game will demonstrate the level
of understanding of each student.
Students will be working in
groups on the problems that they
have submitted to me as a
formative assessment as well as
solving each others problems.
This will prepare them for the
formal written exam.

Flashcards - Students will create their own
flash cards, index cards or quizlet, with the
standard rules and add what they need help
with the most.
Math Jeopardy - Students will demonstrate
how well they really know the lesson as
they create their own problems for a unit
review game.
Formal written exam - This exam
will assess how well the students
have improved from their survey.
This exam will test their
individual knowledge on the
lesson and students will be able
to demonstrate how well they
know the material after each
assessment.

Lesson 1 (Teacher Lecture)

Student Learning Objective:
To help students
understand the meaning of
taking the derivative of a
function.
Acceptable Evidence Lesson Activities: Students will observe a moving object
(Assessments): Students and record the different rates of change (speeding up,
will be assessed on their slowing down, and stopping). At each phase, the students
knowledge of derivatives will explain the rates of change and formulate a function
as rates of change to describe it in terms of mathematics. Students will then
through the activity and go back and explain in words what it really means to take
how well they explain the the derivative of a function, why we take the derivative,
and understand the relationships.

This webercise will
demonstrate how well the
students understand the
terminology used in class
and how well they follow
directions and show
whether or not they know
how to find the useful
resources provided.
Acceptable Evidence: Students
will complete the webercise
assignment and will be assessed
on how well they complete each
problem.
Lesson Activities: Students will complete the
worksheet by using the tools provided.
Understanding the tools and how to use it
educationally. This will allow students to explore
the useful resources provided on the class website
and will show that they understand that there are
reliable resources provided. This will also
demonstrate whether or not the student knows
how to solve the problems.

Lesson 3 (Graphic Organizer)

Student Learning Objective:
This lesson will cover
sections 4.1 and 5.0 on the
content standards. This will
allow students to
demonstrate their
knowledge on the unit.
Acceptable Evidence: Students
will follow the directions and
will be assessed based on the
rubric provided.
Lesson Activities: Student will complete the
graphic organizer in a step-by-step manner and
explain in full detail as to why and how they came
up with the solutions. This will allow the students
to explain and demonstrate their knowledge on
the true meaning of derivatives.
