The basic objective of a Yeshiva is to instill a love for
learning, a desire to achieve and ultimately see success
in the development of a well rounded educated student.
To reach these goals one must transmit to the student a
desire to love, care and enjoy learning.
A very basic component to achieve success is the
implementation of an effective process. We find in the
Parsha of Korach, where Hashem tells the leaders of
the Tribes to place their staffs in the Ohel Moed (Tent
of Meeting), "and the man that I (Hashem) will choose,
his staff will blossom."
The result was that the staff of Aharon had blossomed,
sprouted a bud and developed almonds.
The obvious question is asked, what was the point of
this whole process? Wouldn't it have been enough to
just say "And Aharon's staff sprouted almonds?" Why
did the Torah mention "The staff of Aharon brought
forth a blossom AND sprouted a bud AND developed
almonds." Wouldn't the proof and miracle of the
development of the almonds alone, without the
blossom and bud, been enough?
The answer is obvious, the blossom and the bud
symbolize the process which leads to the growth of the
almonds that represent our leaders. It is our objective
and goal to produce true leadership by bringing success
to our students through this step by step process.

D'var Torah

The Gemara in Berochos says, “Words of Torah will
not last in a person unless he kills himself for it,” as
we see this in this week’s parasha, “This is the
teaching regarding a man if he will die in the
tent.”(Bamidbar 19;14)
The Chofetz Chaim learns from this Gemara how a
person can set aside time to learn Torah everyday,
and he explains with a parable.
There was once a very wealthy merchant who was
so busy day and night with his business, that he
didn’t have time to daven with a minyan, nor did he
set a time for learning Torah.
The years went on. He began getting white hairs
and was getting weaker. He realized that it
wouldn’t be too much longer until he would face
the great Almighty in the heavenly courts, where he
would have to show what he accomplished in his
lifetime.
He decided that from now on he would daven with
a minyan everyday and then learn afterwards for a
couple of hours.
On the first day of his new schedule, he arrived at
work noticeably late. His wife, who was running
the business, was very annoyed at him and
demanded, “Why are you so late? We have a line of
customers waiting to be helped! What’s with you?
You’re three hours late!”
He answered her, “I had a very urgent matter
which kept me from coming on time.”

This went on for a few days and one day his wife
decided to find out why her husband was coming so
late every day. She started to ask around, “Does
anyone know where my husband is during these
hours of the morning?”
A passer-by offered, “Lately I’ve been seeing him
going into the shul at seven a.m. and leaving after
ten a.m.” After hearing this, she ran to the Beis
Hamedrash where she saw her husband fervently
learning, and yelled, “What’s with you? Have you
lost your mind? Our store is filled with customers
waiting to be served and you’re sitting here and
learning? You are causing us a terrible loss; the
customers will go to our competitors since we
aren’t giving them the service we should be giving
them!”
The husband said to her, “Let’s say the Angel of
Death would come to me saying, ‘Its time for me to
take you out of this world now, come with me,’
wouldn’t you agree that I wouldn’t be able to tell
him that my store is full with customers and I will
lose their business?”
Her husband continued, “Make believe that during
these few hours I am not alive, and I am sure you
will be very happy even though I will be this late.”
This is what Chazal meant when they said, “Words
of Torah will not last in a person unless he kills
himself for it.” A person has to imagine that he is
dead so that he has no excuses not to learn. Even
though a person may have many worries, they
cannot take away from his time of learning Torah.
The Chofetz Chaim said in the name of a great
Tzaddik that “A person should reason three things
with himself. Firstly, he only has one more day to
live. Secondly, he only has one Mishna or one daf of
Gemara to learn at this moment. Lastly, he is the
only Jew in this world that Hashem commanded to
learn Torah, and the world’s existence depends on
him alone.”
When a person knows that he only has this one more
day to live, he will devote all his strength to repent
and do the mitzvos. He won’t push them off for
another day.

D'var Torah

The Sin of the Rock
Moshe hit the rock and was punished very
harshly. Many commentators discuss what the exact
sin was. What is interesting is that earlier in the
desert Moshe was commanded to hit that exact
rock and water came forth (Shemos 17:6; Yalkut
Shmioni states that it was the same rock in both
place!). Here he was told to speak to the rock to
extract the water. Why then was he allowed to hit it
earlier?
The Yalkut Shimoni sheds light upon this in
a way that we can learn a most important lesson.
When a child is young, at times (and in an
appropriate manner) a hit from the parent can correct
his behavior, but when he matures, the best way to
get him to comply is to talk to him and allow him to
understand your words and the behavior expected of
him. So too, when the Jews began their journey in
the desert, Moshe had to hit the childlike rock.
However, after forty years in the desert, Moshe
should have only spoken to the rock!
Moshe’s sin was certainly on his high level;
nevertheless, we can learn a most relevant lesson
from it.
