Tutorial Notes

The voltage developed in an inductor depends on the rate of change of current in that inductor.
V = L ( di/dt)

For Inductors connected in series Ltotal = L1 + L2 + L3 etc

For Inductors connected in parallel 1/Ltotal = 1/L1 + 1/L2 + 1/L3 etc

R = l/A

R = Rref [1 + (T - Tref)]

Q 1 Inductance

The current through a coil with a inductance of 3 mH grows linearly from zero to 15 A in 8 ms.

Determine the value of the counter-emf generated.

Awnser

Q2 Inductance

Three inductors have inductance of 10 mH, 10 mH and 50 mH.

Determine their total inductance when connected:

a In series

b In parallel

In the above two cases the inductors are far apart so that there is no mutual inductance between

them.

Q3 AC Circuits

For an Inductor of 60mH connected to an AC voltage source of frequency 100Hz calculate its

reactance XL

Awnser

Q4 AC Circuits

For an inductor connected in series with an AC source.

a. Plot V, I and power over time The plot magnitudes are unimportant. The sketch must show
the phase relationship.
b. Add a resistor and replot showing roughly how the phase relationship changes.
