Abstract
Background. Neutrophils are the first body defense cells that act against an infectious and activate
NADPH oxidase to release large amounts of ROS. Polyphenols are active compounds in robusta coffee
beans (Coffea robusta). It has been widely known as antioxidants property that play role is superoxide
dismutase (SOD).
Objective of this research is to investigate the effect of polyphenol robusta coffee beans in vitro on SOD
production in neutrophil.

Figure 1. Diagram of the Mean Value of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). Bars represent mean from a represented
experiment in triplicate (n = 3).
The obtained data were analyzed by using one way ANOVA and no significant difference were
found between the treatment groups. In Table 1, KP 6 showed the highest SOD production,
whereas KP 2 showed the lowest one. Based on the tables above, it is known that the SOD level
is increased in the treatment groups compared to the control group (KP2).
CONCLUSION
Polyphenol extract of Robusta coffee beans has wide biological activities for health in
general, and one of them is its properties as an antioxidant which is proved by the elevation of
SOD enzyme level where the highest level is observed in 25% polyphenol group.
