Producers, Consumers,

and Decomposers
MR. HENDY INDUSTRIES
Three Parts to the Ecosystem Food
Chain

Producers
Consumers
Decomposers
They are all dependent on one
another
Producers

Producers are plants that get their energy

from the sun through the process of
photosynthesis. Plants do not need to
consume food in order to get energy to
live, they only need abiotic elements
(sunlight, water, oxygen, and nutrients
from the soil).
Consumers

Consumers need to
EAT their food in order
to get energy.
There are actually 3 types of
consumers

Herbivores
Carnivores
Omnivores
Herbivores

Herbivores eat producers

(plants) to get their energy.
Sometimes instead of eating
plants directly, they will eat a
plants seeds, vegetables, or fruit.
They do not eat meat.
Carnivores

Carnivores eat meat to get

their energy. Usually,
carnivores eat herbivores.
Why do you think that is?
Omnivores

Omnivores are the most

adaptable and can eat
both plants and other
animals for their energy.
Decomposers

Decomposers are fungi

and animals that break
down dead things into
basic nutrients.
