Course Description

Objective
To introduce the basic principles of communication system to the students.

Course Outcomes
At the end of the course the students should be able to:

C02Design and analyze various types of analog and digital communication generators
and receivers
C03 Apply the concepts to practical applications in telecommunications.
C04 Proceed to a more advanced course in communication systems.

Contents
•INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION SYSTEM :
Communication system in general, classification of signals, types of channels, importance of
modulation, comparison of digital and analog communication, introduction to noise, equivalent
circuits, noise voltage and power, noise figure and temperature (6 hrs)

•AMPLITUDE MODULATION :
Introduction, amplitude modulation with carrier (AM), modulation index, frequency spectrum,
bandwidth and power calculations, types of AM with supressed carrier (DSBSC, SSBSC), their
frequency spectrums, power and bandwidth calculations, gneration and detection circuits for
AM, DSBSC and SSBSC, superheterodyne receiver, presence of noise in AM system (9 hrs)

•ANGLE MODULATION (FM and PM) :


Introduction to FM, modulation index, frequency spectrum and bandwidth calculations, types of
FM (narrowband and wide band), generation of detection circuits, application in commercial
broadcasting, noise effect on FM, relationship between FM and PM (12 hrs)

•DIGITAL MODULATIONS :
Pulse Code Modulations (PCM), sampling theorem (PAM, PWM, PPM), quantization (uniform
and non-uniform), types of coding (NRZ, Manchester and etc), delta modulation, digital
transmission (ASK, FSK, PSK), multiplexing system (SDM, FDM, TDM), presence of noise in
digital system (bit error rate) (15 hrs)
