Homework # 2
(Due on October 9, 2017)
Problem #1
Water flows in a horizontal 45 reducing elbow, see figure. Determine the force needed to hold
the elbow in place.
P1 = 160 kPa P2 = 150 kPa Q = 0.008 m 3 /s = 1000 kg/m 3

Problem #2
A siphon is setup to remove gasoline from a tank, see figure. Estimate the volumetric flow rate
of the gasoline coming out of the siphon if the pipe diameter is 1 cm.

Problem #3
Most large dams contain flood gates that can be raised to release stored water. The gate shown
slides against a plate on each side. The gate is 5000 kg. Also the coefficient of static friction
between the gate and the plates is equal to 0.4. Determine the value of the force R needed to
raise the gate.

Problem #4
The power required to drive a fan (P) is a function of air properties: , and fan blade
diameter D, mass flow rate m, and rotational speed . Use dimensional analysis to
determine an expression for the power.

Problem #5
Water flows in a 2 cm diameter inclined tube, see figure. Determine the pressure drop in
the pipe.
Given: = 1000 kg/m 3 , f = 0.03, Q = 0.001 m 3 /s

Problem #6
Steady, laminar, incompressible, and fully developed flow between two parallel plates.
The distance between the plates is h, and the lower plate is fixed while the upper one is
moving with a speed U. Using conservation of mass and momentum equations derive an
expression for the velocity profile.

Problem #7
Water flows from a 10 cm diameter, 400 m long galvanized horizontal pipe that is
attached to a reservoir. The water level in the reservoir is 20 m above the center of the
pipe. A valve controls the flow in the pipe. Determine the volumetric flow rate at the
exit of the pipe
L = 100 m = 10 -6 in m 2/S
K = 0.5 for the entrance of the pipe, K = 10 for the valve
