Interview Questions for EPC 3403

Answer the questions below

Name: Aisha Ali Alowais

Competence Sustained Teaching

Introduction Describe the setting, the grades you taught and explain the purpose of this placement:

-Warmer The setting of my teaching practice (TP) school this semester takes place in Al Darari, in a

Kindergarten called Al Darari Kindergarten. The kindergarten is run by Miss Fatima, it is a

colorful, spacious, and fun filled place where students of ages 3-7 (KG1 and KG2) can learn

and play. The school has a student teacher ratio of 282/12 and has students that differ in levels

of learning and types of intelligences. I have visited this kindergarten yearly, as it has been a

very comfortable and memorable experience every time. During this semester I have taught

the KG2-2 students (Ages 5-7), and had Miss Hessa Ali as my MST. The purpose of this

placement is so we are able to implement math and science lessons during the semester, and

KG1 students cant take science, math, and even English. And so we were asked to choose a

KG2 teacher, I chose Miss Hessa because out of all my previous TP experiences, hers was

always my favorite.

2
Professionali How did you demonstrate professional behavior as a trainee teacher in the school?

sm Explain how you maintained your professional status not only in your own classroom but

also across the school.

I demonstrated my professional behavior and status as a trainee teacher in school by greeting

the teachers every morning, being open to requests from teachers, being involved in

workshops, informing my MST of all that needs to be done this semester beforehand, and by

not backing down from last minute lessons when needed. The teachers even entrusted us with

evaluating the students of our classroom 1-on-1 for the governments reports on the English

skills level of each student.

Explain how conducting and receiving one formal peer observations helped you to

develop professionally?

Conducting and receiving one formal peer observation has helped me develop professionally

as it gained me insight on how my peer views my lesson, not as my friend but as a professional

associate. I learned what to focus on when conducting a peer observation, and how every

detail in the lesson matters.

3
Explain how you collaborated with other staff in activities that involve the community

during this placement.

Ive collaborated with a few teachers this semester, however the most memorable one was

The Jungle Party. It was an event we helped plan with the teachers in which we threw a

small animal/jungle themed activity party for the KG2 students. There were around 6 table

activities, face painting, the gift section, a dance section, and even a picture zone. We had

prepared the party a week or two prior to the event, first by hot glue gunning the plastic

animals onto the lids of the plastic jars, then by gluing the animal designs on the straws, then

by cutting out the papers for the party, followed by decorating the theatre where the party took

place, and finally by being assigned an activity and table to work on for the event. My

colleague and I had to work on a table together where we had students paint wooden animals

then we would glue them onto a paper with their names on it. The other 5 tables were

occupied by mothers of the students who also wanted to partake in this event, they did

activities such as animal hair clips and paper plate animals. The English teacher had the event

split into two sections, first the KG2 students from the sections 1,2,3, and after the playground

the KG2 students from sections 4,5,6. She would have classes one by one come to the dance

center where they danced to a jungle song, she would also ask them questions during the

games and rewards them with stickers. When the event was done we collaborated with the

cleaning ladies by cleaning our tables and then helping them clean the other tables, we also

washed off all the paint and returned the materials to where they belonged.

4
Planning for Describe the process you went thorough in order to plan an integrated, thematic unit of

Learning work in partnership with your MST. How were you guided in this by your own teaching

(including philosophy? What impact did the use of STEAM/STEM activities have on student

Knowledge learning? Do not answer this question

and

Understandi What difficulties did you face in planning seven differentiated lesson plans to ensure that

ng of they included a range of activity types for the whole class, groups, and individuals

Content) I faced a few difficulties during this process as the class didnt have an English teacher, so I

had to go to other classrooms to view how their English teacher presents a lesson. Another

difficulty was that my MST had asked me to always keep things worksheet based as this is

what the students were used to and what the school preferred, also having a 15-minute lesson

followed by an Arabic lesson followed by activities tend to confuse the children, however I

always tend to review with them whilst working on activities.

Explain how you assessed the learning objectives/outcomes you set the students.

I would usually assess the learning objectives/outcomes you set the students by asking them

questions during the lessons, having each students individually answer, discussion, and

through their work during the activities Ive provided them with.

5
Implementin Explain what you did to make sure that your modeling / demonstration of the tasks you

g and set your students was clear and effective.

Managing

Learning In order to make sure that the modeling / demonstration of the tasks I set for my students were

(including clear and effective by hanging it on the board with magnets to ensure that all students can see

behavior the activity. I then demonstrate the activity for all students to see in order to understand the

management steps, and while demonstrating I tell them the steps and have them involved in the process of

, language, working on it. When I am done demonstrating all the activities, I ask them if they understood

and the activities and if theyre ready to try them out.

delivery)

What strategies did you apply to maintain student engagement and how effective were

they in ensuring that tasks were completed effectively?

I maintained student engagement by constantly asking them questions, having discussions, and

playing them videos and songs involved in lessons. This was effective as students liked to talk

about their thoughts and opinions, they also liked to sing, dance, and have story videos.

6
Provide examples of how you developed student independence and responsibility in your

classes.

Some examples of how I developed my students independence and responsibility in my

classes are;

- Having students work on an activity that allows them to have choices such as, choosing

their own coloring worksheet, what flavor of ice cream do they want to color, what do

you think the order of the colors of the safety light are.

- Allowing the students decide what story they want me to read them that day by votes.

- Having the students pick the activities they want to do. Usually I would assign them

activities according to their levels and grouping, however, there are some students of

the higher level that want to color or students of the lower levels that want to trace, and

I allow them to do so.

Monitoring, What strategies did you use to monitor student progress across a range of connected

Assessment, teaching sessions including class, group, pair, and individual work?

and I used the strategy of photography to monitor student progress across a range of connected

Evaluation teaching sessions including class, group, pair, and individual work. I would take pictures of

their work and how they improved, I also had been assigned from the government to assess the

students levels of English and knowledge of shapes and colors.

Provide examples of and describe the formative assessment instruments such as as

anecdotal notes, checklists, Traffic Lights, photos, children self-assessment, Learning

Journey, etc.. you used to evaluate student performance in a variety of activity types

7
To evaluate students performance, I once used my MSTs checklist to ensure that all the

students knew what we were doing in the lesson. However, I mainly used pictures and asking

questions in order to assess my students during this assessment. I couldnt keep their

documents with me as it is meant, as stated by my MST, to be taken home with the students to

show their parents their hard work.

Reflection

on Practice Which teaching strategies did you find were particularly effective and explained why

with reference to educational theory and/or experience?

With reference to Piagets teaching strategies, the strategy I found most effective was building

on existing knowledge. Students are introduced to a topic and and days go by they grow more

and more regarding the information they take in, later on with concrete activities they have

sealed the information in by practicing what they learned through their activities.

Identify and critically evaluate the influence of a range of stakeholders at your school e.g.

Ministry of Education, Principal, parents, etc.

The influence mainly is effected by the Ministry of Education; The ministry keeps changing

the lesson plans and kindergarten rules that the staff and students need to follow and all they

can do is accept them. However, the second influence is the principal, Miss Fatima, she

controls what happens and what doesnt in school, any lesson, plan, or trip that the teachers

want to initiate has to go through her first. She however is a wonderful principal that only

wants whats best for the students, and unlike most principals that stay by their desk, shes

8
usually roaming around helping out and observing the school. The parents dont have any

influence in the school, they however are sometimes involved in workshops and conferences.

The teachers are the least influential in the school, they cant do anything without the principal

and ministrys approval and so they follow the rules and try to adjust their lessons according to

them.

Explain how closely you were able to apply key principles from your own teaching

philosophy as a student teacher in this school?

My teaching philosophies that I have made this year were all achieved during this TP. I

respected all beliefs and values, whilst treating all the students equally and with respect, and I

showed that all children can learn. An example of that is, when Shamma, one of my students,

had an accident and couldnt walk and was temporarily handicapped, I would bring the

activities to her, in a place where she could work with her peers and feel equal and involved in

the lesson.

What would you say have been your particular strengths during this TP? Which areas

for development have you identified for next semester - justify this?

I think my strengths for this semester during TP would be my ability to collaborated with the

kindergarten staff and to communicate with the students. However I need to develop a more

broad range of activities for next semester and work on my time management. My

justification would be the artifacts on my Weebly that show my work in the school and

collaboration with the staff of Al Darari Kindergarten.
