NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS
Nonlinear Finite Element Analyses (considering Material and Geometric
nonlinearities) have been carried out on adhesively bonded joints.A suitable
viscoplastic constitutive model for the adhesive material has been
implemented and parametric studies have been carried out on lap
joints(single/double/scarf) to understand the interface behaviour. This study
is of interest not only in Structural Engineering(Civil/ Aerospace) but also in
Mechanical/Automobile Engineering. Especially,for Civil Structures,this
study is of interest in rehabilitation and retrofitting of aging structures, where
adhesively bonded plates(composites/metals) offer great promise. This study
has also some relevance in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering.

STRAIN SPACE PLASTICITY

In this investigation, the strain-space plasticity theory is implemented for
elastic-perfectly plastic material in the framework of non-linear finite
element analysis and the results are compared with those of stress space
formulation. In the conventional (stress space) plasticity models (constitutive
equations) the yield surface, loading and unloading criteria, flow rule, and
often hardening rules are defined in stress space. In such formulation the
loading criteria cannot distinguish the plastic loading from elastic
unloading for work-softening materials, and in the case of elastic-perfectly
plastic materials, there is ambiguity and hence, separate treatment is
needed. A strain-space formulation on the other hand can eliminate such
difficulties and can therefore accommodate work hardening, work softening,
and elastic-perfectly plastic situations in a unique way. Here, non-linear
finite element studies are carried out on elastic-perfectly plastic materials to
illustrate the merits of strain-space formulation.

ADHESIVELY BONDED JOINTS & STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

UNDER STATIC & CYCLIC LOADING

ADHESIVELY BONDED LAP JOINTS:

Behaviour under monotonic loading
The investigation involves 3-D nonlinear finite element analysis and
addresses three dimensional behaviour of adhesively bonded lap joints which
have gained importance particularly due to recent popularity of composites in
civil, aerospace and mechanical engineering. The present investigation
considers viscoplastic behaviour of adhesive material and geometric
nonlinearity due to finite joint rotation. However, in the analysis presented, the
adherands have been assumed to be linearly elastic in behaviour. The
nonlinear solution algorithms is implemented in the frame-work of total
Lagrangian formulation and have been extensively tested /verified with
several benchmark examples.
Extensive numerical study has been carried out on several joint parametrics
with reference to Lap joints. However, the focus of attention in this
investigation is mainly interface behaviour and stress-distribution in the
adhesive layer. The peel and shear stresses in the adhesive layer have been
numerically and graphically presented both in 2-D as well as 3-D surface
plots, thus revealing three dimensional stressed zones in the lap geometry .

Behaviour under Cyclic loading

While most of the investigations carried out in the past are under monotonic
loading, this investigation is focussed on behaviour of adhesively bonded
structural systems under cyclic/fatigue loading using 3-D Nonlinear Finite
Element analysis with Geometric nonlinearity as well as considering
Elastoplasticity/Viscoplasticity in the adhesives .The study includes analyses
of axially loaded bi-adhesive single lap joints, composite patch repair, cyclic
analysis of single lap joints,Double lap joints,.Fatiggue phenomena such as
ratchetting and shakedown have also been investigated.

Page 12
In addition, 3-D study also been carried out on Double lap joints and Scarf
joints , a topic which has not been investigated much in the
past.Another, topic of great practical relevance addressed in this investigation
is adhesively bonded patch repair.Though, these topics on scarf joints and
patch repair have been briefly investigated here, this study is of great
significance in driving future investigation.

ADHESIVELY BONDED PATCH REPAIR

Adhesively bonded joints and structural systems has great relevance in
mordern day engineering practice, such as in civil, aerospace and mechanical
engineering industries. The use of adhesively bonded lap joints & structural
patch-repair is growing with increasing popularity of composite materials.
While most of the investigations carried out in the past are under monotonic
loading, the present investigation is focussed on behaviour of adhesively
bonded structural systems under cyclic/fatigue loading using 3-D Nonlinear
Finite Element analysis with Geometric nonlinearity as well as considering
Elastoplasticity/Viscoplasticity in the adhesives .
The study includes analyses of axially loaded bi-adhesive single lap
joints, composite patch repair, cyclic analysis of single lap joints,Double lap

been investigated.
Comprehensive Parametric study have been carriedout displaying peel-stress
and interface shear stress distribution, especially with 3-D presentation.

INTEGRATED FORCE METHOD(IFM) BASED FEM
The Integrated Force Method (IFM) is a recent development in
Computational Structural Mechanics.IFM is a re-formulation of the
Classical force method for automated computation.Originally conceptualized
by Dr.Patnaik(a Scientist from Bangalore) in seventies, has now attracted
attention of researchers due to its superior performance as compared to
Displacement based finite-elements,in many practical situations.
Page 13

The Integrated Force Method(IFM) which is a modification of classical

Force Method for automated computarisation and is found to yield more
accurate stress-values as compared to conventional displacement-based
finite-elements, has been adopted to develop a family of Plate-bending
elements.

The contributions made here can be summarised as a systematic development

of a family of finite- elements both under thin and thick plate categories. In
addition, development of finite-element for laminated composites has also
been attempted. An important aspect of computerization of IFM is the
automatic generation of compatibility conditions, for which an efficient
algorithm has been developed. Explicit formulations of the finite-elements

SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS USING FEM
Sensitivity analysis is an emerging fruitful area of engineering research. The
reason for this popularity is the recognition of the variety of usages for
sensitivity derivatives. In its early stages ,sensitivity analysis found its
predominant use in assessing the effect of varying parameters in
mathematical models of control systems. There has also been strong interest
in Sensitivity analysis in structural optimization.
But more recently, Response Sensitivity has been identified as a
structural parameter with several useful engineering applications. As a
consequence, emerging interest in sensitivity analysis has emphasized need
for efficient computational strategies. There is need for dedicated finite
element codes for accurate computation of sensitivity derivatives.Hybrid
finite elements have been adopted to explore their performance with
reference to Analytical/Semi-analytical Sensitivities.Further, Sensitivity study
has also been carried out on Beams/Plates on Elastic foundations using both
Symbolic computation as well as Finite Element Procedures.

Page
14
Integrated Force Method (IFM) has been invented by rectifying the
shortcomings of conventional Force-methods,thus making it convenient for
computer implementation. The method has evolved over the years with its
own Variational Principle. It has greater potential than conventional FEM
for predicting stresses with far better accuracy.Research effort would be
directed to develop algorithms for Sensitivity Analysis of Plate/Shell
elements based on IFM .

CONTINUUM DAMAGE MECHANICS [CDM]

Continuum Damage Mechanics, originally introduced by Kachanov(1958)

has now reached a stage which allows practical engineering applications. In
contrast to Fracture Mechanics, which considers the process of initiation
and growth of microcracks as a discontinuous phenomena,CDM uses a
continuous variable which is related to the density of these defects ,to
describe the deterioration of the material before initiation of macrocracks.
The damage variable based on theeffective stress concept represents
average material degradation which reflects the various types of damage at
the micro-scale level(like nucleation and growth of voids,cavities,micro-
cracks and other microscopic defects).Continuum Damage theories are
based on the Thermodynamics of irreversible processes and the internal
variable theory. To model isotropic damage processes,it suffices to consider
scalar damage variable, where as tensor valued damage variables are
required to account for anisotropic damage.Isotropic damage formulations
are extensively employed in literature because of their simplicity and
adequacy for many practical applications.

Page 15
Research has been initiated in the department in the area of CDM with
reference to Ductile Damage modeling.Three isotropic ductile damage
models have been developed and integrated with elastoplasticity in the
framework of Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis.Effort has also been put to
develop efficient computational algorithms , Illustrations have been made to
bring out the potential of CDM in structural integrity assessment.

Recently, CDM has been further adopted to study failure in FRP

composites. As a novel application CDM has also been utilized to generate
yield line curve for plates as well as to generate S-N curves under cyclic
loading.Computational Issues have also been addressed as outlined in the
next section.

PHYSICAL & COMPUTATIONAL ASPECT OF CDM

The material degrade under thermo-mechanical loadings and environmental

conditions. This may ultimately lead to excessive deformation and falure of
structural components and endanger the integrity of the whole system. In
metals and alloys, the phenomena of damage is identified by
nucleation,growth and coalescence of microvoids/microcracks.The
microvoids nucleate mainly at the second phase particles by particle-fracture
or interfacial-decohesion and subsequently these microvoids grow due to
plastic straining of the surrounding material.Macroscopically, this material
damage phenomena is manifested via degradation of mechanical properties
such as stiffness-reduction,strength-deterioration,density-changes etc. The
evolving area of Continuum Damage Mechanics(CDM),models the
degradation phenomena in the framework of continuum thermodynamics .
The damage phenomena in a material is modeled by defining an internal
variable which can be a scalar, vector or a tensorial quantity ,similar to a
continuum variable and depending on the nature of
degradation(isotropic/anisotropic).

Page 16
The investigation has adressed Computational issues of Damage-coupled
Elastoplasticity.Several algorithms have been developed and coded in the
framework of nonlinear FEM ,particularly for plane-stress,plane strain and
three-dimensional continuum problems. The main contribution made here can
be outlined as follows:(1)Integration of constitutive equations for damage
coupled elastoplasticity and their consistent linearization.Backward Euler
integration scheme has been used and by consistent linearization of update
equations, consistent tangent modulus has been obtained.

Page
12
The algorithms have been implemented in a nonlinear fem framework and
their accuracy is verified.A reduction of the general 3-D algorithm to special
case of plane stress has also been worked out.Generalized mid-point as well
as operator split algorithms have been derived in the context of damage
coupled elastoplasticity.Several examples have been included for illustration
including those for cyclic loading.(2)The issues related to solution of
nonlinear equations in the present context have been addressed. Here,The
Newton-Raphson and The Modified Newton-Raphson methods have been
used.In equilibrium path tracing strategy, the following schemes have been
adopted:(i)Load control,(ii)Displacement Control and (iii)Arc length
scheme.Advantages and disadvantages of different path-tracing schemes have
been investigated for damage coupled elastoplasticity.(3)The formulation has
been extended for Large deformation elastoplasticity coupled with
damage. The Updated Lagrangian formulation has been derived based on
virtual work principle and consistent stress-strain conjugated at various stages
of deformed configurations have been identified. The issues related to
consistent updated lagrangian formulation is discussed.Green-Nagadi stress
rate has been adopted from the objectivity consideration ,wherein integration
is carried out by transfering the variables to a rotationally neutralized
configuration.Kinematics of elastoplastic deformation is based on additive
decomposition of deformation rate tensor. The algorithms thus developed have
been coded and verified with appropriate benchmark examples.

CDM BASED PROGRESSIVE FAILURE ANALYSIS OF
COMPOSITES
Progressive failure of FRP laminates is investigated in the framework of
nonlinear Finite Element Analysis using CDM and expressing the failure
phenomena through Damage Evolution Models. Damage Models have
been developed taking into account coupling of various damage modes of
failure in FRP composites.
Progressive Failure Analysis(PFA) algorithms have been developed and
verified with available bench-mark examples.Further, the algorithms have been
extended to Fatigue Failure analysis & S-N Curve generation. The damage-
coupled PFA have been illustrated by analyzing various cases of practical
importance,such as:Adhesively bonded FRP lap joints,FRP strengthened
beams,Yield-line pattern generation as well as PFA of fully composite
structural systems.

FRP COMPOSITES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

STRENGTHENING & RETROFITTING USING FRP

FRP composite materials have experienced a continuous increase of use in

structural strengthening and repair applications around the world in the last
decade. High stiffness to weight ratios of these materials combined with their
superior environmental durability have made them a competing alternative to
the conventional strengthening and repair materials, for both concrete and
steel structures.
Steel bridges constitute a large number of existing bridges, especially in
railways. Corrosion, lack of proper maintenance and fatigue sensitive details
are major problems in steel bridges. Besides these problems many bridges
need to carry higher loads and increasing traffic volume. Replacing bridges
with new construction is a costly affair. It is reported in the literature that cost
of retrofitting is much less than cost of replacement. Besides the economical
advantages retrofitting takes less time and therefore reduces service
interruption time. Therefore enhancement in strength of such systems with use
of FRP is a very attractive option. Strengthening with FRP composites can be
applied to various types of structural members including beams, columns,
slabs and wall.
Page
14
Depending on the member type, the objective of strengthening may be one or
a combination of several of the fallowing;1)to increase axial, flexural or shear
load capacities. 2) to increase ductility for improved seismic performance. 3)
to increase stiffness for reduced deflections under service and design loads 4)
to increase fatigue life 5) and to increase durability against environmental
effects. Current method of retrofitting steel bridges and structures typically
utilize steel plates that are bolted or welded to the original structure.
Difficulty in placing the heavy steel plates, by field welding or Bolting them
to parent beam and durability issues are some of the drawbacks of this
method. Steel plates require heavy lifting equipment and can add considerable
dead load to the original structure. Further Steel plates are susceptible to
corrosion. Welding is not an appropriate solution due to fatigue related
problems. Mechanical details such as bolted connections, which have better
fatigue life, are time consuming and costly

Page 19

and can create defects in the structure if not properly executed. Hence the use
of adhesively bonded FRP for strengthening purpose in lieu of conventional
methods is superior due to better force transfer mechanism and other
advantages. However method is yet to become mainstream application due to
a number of economical and design related issues. From structural mechanics
point of an important concern regarding the effectiveness and safety of the
method is the potential of brittle debonding failure. Such failures unless
adequately considered in the design process, may significantly decrease the
effectiveness of the strengthening or repair application.
Use of FRP composite materials for strengthening and repair of structural
members has become an increasingly popular area of research and application
in the last decade. Experimental investigations with regard to different
schemes of strengthening of structural member (steel as well as concrete) are
reported in literature. Many experimental investigations have been reported in
literature illustrating the effectiveness of adhesively bonding FRP to steel
beams to increase the flexural strength. Several configurations of strengthened
beams (undamaged and damaged) have been tested. In most of the
experimental investigations conducted the stiffness and strength had improved
considerably.
However, extensive investigation is required in order to understand failure
mechanism of FRP-strengthened system. In the cases of experimental
investigation where failure occurred it has been observed that the cohesive
failure of the adhesive is most prominent and it happened quickly.
Page
15
Delamination of FRP is another mode failure but not as severe as cohesive
failure of the adhesive interface. Finite Element Simulation to study such
failure phenomena has been initiated.

Page 20
FRP STRENGTHENED STEEL (RAILWAY) GIRDERS
A Feasibility Study

This investigation presents finite element analysis of FRP strengthened steel

beam for better understanding of interface stresses, which are mainly
responsible for debonding failure. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite
element analysis has been undertaken to investigate the behavior of a
steel beam strengthened with adhesively bonded carbon fiber
reinforced plastic
(CFRP) under monotonic loading. Three kinds of analysis have been carried
out. Linear, Geometrically nonlinear, as well as materially nonlinear
along with Geometric nonlinearity has been considered for the analysis
of adhesive layer stresses for a typical beam. Large rotation-small
strain formulation has been used for geometrically nonlinear analysis.
The adhesive was regarded as elastic-perfectly plastic, while the I
beam flange as well as CFRP were linear elastic continuum. Drucker-
Prager criterion was considered for the yielding of adhesive. It includes
the effect of spherical stress and difference in tensile and compressive
yield stresses, which affect the post-yield behavior of adhesives.
Critical locations in adhesive layer between CFRP plate and flange of
the beam for cohesive failure possibilities have been identified.

FRP STRENGTHENED MASONRY STRUCTURES

A fesiability study
Brick masonry is an ancient building technique.Unreinforced masonry
buildings constitute significant part of the buildings inventory
worldwide.Structural weakness, overloading,dynamic
vibrations,settlements,and in-plane & out-of-plane deformations can cause
failure of unreinforced masonry structures.Nowadays, preservation of the
architectural helitage constituting masonry construction is also a matter of
great concern. The use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites has
been growing rapidly in civil engineering applications in recent time,
especially for strengthening of Concrete and masonry Structures.

GENERAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Concept of Virtual Testing /Numerical Simulation
In general Civil engineering structures are one of a kind and never
duplicated.Unlike in mechanical or aerospace industry possibilities exist to
carryout prototype testing in the laboratory, the concept is rather impractical
for civil engineering structures.Recent development in numerical simulation
techniques(eg.using Finite Element Method),structures of any size and shape
real or virtual can be studied provided adequate information about the
material and loading is known. This leads to a new concept of Virtual Testing
of Civil Structures.Attempt has been made to numerically model study
behaviour of several civil engineering structures and components in the
past. The exercise includes proper constitutive modeling of
construction/fabrication materials. The investigation carried out in this context
can be seen under following categories of publications:

NEW TECHNOLOGY & HERITAGE STRUCTURES

Restoration and Strengthening/retrofitting of heritage & historic structures
requires multidisciplinary approach.Typical features of historical and
monumental structures do not allow conventional rehabilitation techniques to
be applied as easily as in current masonry or reinforced concrete
buildings, where repair and/or strengthening operations can be performed
irrespective of any artistic or architectural restraint.Great aatention is paid not
only to achieve high structural performance, reliability and durability on
intervention techniques, but also to ensure ease of inspection, maintenance and
monitoring. In view of these, each solution should be conceived in such a way
that it can easily be reversed and substituted, according to values shared in
the field of restoration, aimed at the safeguard of monumental works from
inappropriate refurbishment operation.

Page 23
The new practice is largely oriented to the use of advanced systems, materials
and technologies for both increasing the load bearing capacity of structural
elements, and improving when required, the structures seismic
performance.In this framework,the emerging smart-materials ,MEMS, FRP,
innovative metals(stainless steels, copper, titanium and aluminium alloys) have
great potential.

In an exploratory exercise, the role of Adhesively Bonded FRP in

strengthening Masonry wall, Infilled Frames, Steel-girders have been looked
into.

STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING OF HERITAGE STRUCTURES

Recent development in evolving area of Smart-Materials/Smart-
Structures/Structural-Health-Monitoring(SHM) ,MEMS/Smart-
Sensors,GPR/GPS Technology and advanced numerical simulation techniques
(FEM) open up new hopes and challenges to monitor historical monuments
with enhanced confidence.
Research challenges are enormous which would demand multidisciplinary
approach to tackle the associated problems and generous funding from both
national as well as international agencies .

In this context it would also be desirable to prepare a data-base of

historic/heritage structures with both architectural and structural
details(Material/Geometrical/Seismic/Age-factor etc ) including Structural-
Signatures generated and stored on computers for future-reference if and
when required.Research in this direction ought to be initiated.
This would also require interaction/cooperation of many types of
professionals but Structural-Engineers should be considered natural leaders
for exercise of this nature.

8.FUTURE PLANS (ACADEMIC)

Research activities would continue and shall be further intensified in the
following directions:

Page
34

FRP IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are attractive for use in civil
engineering applications for use in civil engineering applications due to their
efficiency in strength and stiffness, resistance to corrosion and lighterness.
Their application is of most importance in the renewal of constructed facilities
infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, pipelines etc. Recently, their use has
been increased in the rehabilitation of concrete structures, mainly due to their
tailorable performance characteristics, ease of application and low life cycle
costs. These characteristics and the success of structural rehabilitation
measures have led to the development of new lightweight structural concepts
utilizing all FRP systems or new FRP/concrete composite systems. In case of
unreinforced masonry walls strengthening can be accomplished very
economically with thin advanced composite wall overlays.
The ongoing research on the applications of FRP composites in strengthening
of unreinforced masonry would be continued with particular emphasis on the
studies on out-of-plane behavior .

NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS:

Research Directions
Material & Geometric Nonlinearities Plasticity/Viscoplasticity
Strain-Space Plasticity Finite Element Study on Adhesively Bonded
Patch Repair Nonlinear Finite Element Formulation for
Plasticity/Viscoplaticity Coupled with Damage
Nonlinear Response Sensitivities
Research would continue in the area of Material and Geometric
Nonlinearities using Plasticity/Viscoplasticity in the constitutive models.
Investigation shall continue on modeling of Adhesively Bonded
joints.Algorithms based on CDM would be further refined for Damage-
coupled Finite Element Analysis.Computation of Nonlinear Response
Sensitivities would be another challenging direction.

Page
35

RESPONSE SENSITIVITY
Research Directions
FEM Formulation for Sensitivity Computations in Composites
(Analytical/Semianalytical Sensitivities)
Shape Sensitivity
Accuracy in Sensitivity Computations
Higher-order Sensitivities
Role of Sensitivity in Design and Failure study of composites
Response sensitivity in Repair & Retrofitting
Research on Response Sensitivity Computation would be further extended to
FRP Composites adopting appropriate Finite Element Strategy. This study
would be useful not only in design of composite structures, but also in the
rehabilitation and retrofitting of civil structures using composites for
strengthening purposes.

CONTINUUM DAMAGE MECHANICS [CDM]

Research Directions
Continuum Damage Models for Ductile & Brittle Materials
Damage Thresold valures:re-interpretation of macroscopic data
Continuum Damage Models for Composites
FEM based Damage-coupled analysis for integrity assessment
Failure Study of FRP Composites using CDM
*Failure of Adhesively Bonded System using CDM

Attempt shall continue to utilize the Potential of CDM in Structural

Integrity Assessment. It is envisaged that CDM can lead to a unified
constitutive model for a material starting from an ideally damage-free state
to failure by macro-cracks utilizing a mode-independent failure
criteria.Ofcourse, further work is required ,especially in description of
damage and quantification of damage-threshold values for different types of
materials. The task is challenging but it has potential for applications not
only in Civil Engineering, but also in Aerospace,Mechanical and
Biomechanics areas.

SMART MATERIALS & STRUCTURES/STRUCTURAL HEALTH
MONITORING(Civil Engineering Applications):
The field of smart materials and structures is emerging rapidly with
technological innovations appearing in engineering
materials,sensors,actuators,image processing and integration
methodologies.Recent advances in this evolvolving area have lead to the
development of new techniques for real-time monitoring of Structural
Conditions which has great potential for applications in Structural Health
Monitoring.
Feasible Research Directions
Study on Monitoring of Large civil structures(Buildings/Bridges/Dams)
with embedded smart sensors.
Suitability of composite-based smart-sensors for civil structures
Sensitivity based Sensor/actuators positioning in civil structures
Damage study of smart-materials with distributed sensors using
cdm.
Research would be directed in this area along with the areas of AI/ANN
which have neen adopted for Structural Damage Assessment /Structural
Health Monitoring..
Finite Element Development based on Integrated Force Method
Integrated Force Method (IFM) has been invented by rectifying the
shortcomings of conventional Force-methods,thus making it convenient for
computer implementation. The method has evolved over the years with its
own Variational Principle. It has greater potential than conventional FEM
for predicting stresses with far better accuracy.Research effort would be
directed to develop Plate/Shell elements based on IFM and further extend it
to Sensitivity analysis.

Meshless Methods
The recent developments on EFG and other Meshless methods are very
curiously being monitored especially to examine their potential for easy
handeling of nonlinear problems ! It would be tempting to get into this area
in due course provided it has been shown to have greater demonstrated
potential than conventional FEM.

Page
37
New Technology & Heritage Structures
Preservation of Heritage Structures with FRP
In the last few years advanced composites (FRP) have gained considerable
worldwide interest and growing acceptance in the construction industry. The
interest in FRP materials has been growing rapidly by innovative
manufacturing technologies(eg.pultrusion, filament winding,three-
dimensional braiding etc), adhesively-bonding technology as well as
significantly more stable, stronger and cheaper constituents(fibers and
resins). The increasing demand for effective and cost-efficient repair and
strengthening techniques for civil infrastructure has generated a growing
interest for FRP-based technologies, characterized by speed and ease of
implementation and better durability if compared to traditional
technologies.
FRP composites have shown excellent potential to significantly improve
performance and durability of new or deteriorated constructed facilities. The
basic issues related to the short-term performance of structures
repaired/upgraded with FRP composites have been subject of a considerable
amount of experimental as well as theoretical research.Several commercial
or demonstration projects have also been completed in recent years.
However, a strategic research plan is required for basic understanding and
engineering background for use of FRP in construction.
Attempt would be made to obtain funding to carryout investigation of
application of FRP in resoration and strengthening of heritage structures.
Investigation would also be directed towards Structural Health Monitoring
(SHM) of heritage structures using New Technology.
Structural-Health-Monitoring of Heritage Structures would be another
area of research with great application potential .

Book-Writing Exercise:
Would be Interested to take-up book-writing in the areas of my specialization
,in due course. The topic of interest would be:Continuum Damage
Mechanics,Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis, FRP Composites in Civil
Engineering and a general topic Revisiting Pedal Power for sustainable
technology.

9.3.Views on Engineering Education
(Would be interested to share my thoughts at appropriate forum)
1.Present Engineering Education : Some suggestions for reforms
This is based on my paper presented at Int.Conf. on Technical Educationin
21st Century.January 1998.Some ideas were high-lighted on integration of
engineering education at all levels(Diploma/Degree/Post-Graduation).It was
also suggested that introduction of a Pre-professional course( Pre-
Engineering with Physics,Chemistry,Maths and Computers shifted from
regular engineering curriculum)would be more meaningful. Thus the
engineering degree programme can be reduced to 3 years
duration. However, students who have undergone Pre-engineering course
would qualify to appear for exams like JEE or CET.Those, who cant qualify
would still be useful for Software Industry !

Page 43
2. Double Shift Programmes: In order to utilize the education-infrastructure
more efficiently, good engineering colleges nationwide should be
encouraged to have double-shift system. This would not only provide
education opportunities to large number of youngsters but also there would
be more employment opportunities for engineering-teachers.I feel this is one
feasible solution tackle increasing employment with rising population. This
would also help to train large number of technical man power required in
the country as well as in the global market.

9.4 Pedal Power: Its Potential and Environmental Relevance

Keeping in view the environmental and energy-conservation issues and also
the pressure of rapidly growing population ,it is about time to re-examine
the potential of pedal powerin the modern context. The technology which
has survived over a century is still relevant. In order to improve our
transportation system,it would be desirable to integrate Bicycles /Tricycles
in the main transportation network ,where ever feasible considering safety
relted issues.Even the developed countries have started integrating bicycles
in their modern city-transport systems. This message must be communicated.

A research project was supported under ALTECH(Norway) on Design

modification of Rickshaws. A student was sent from Norway for 3 months
to carryout investigation under my supervision(jointly with a Professor of
Mechanical Engineering). The final project report is expected to throw light
on improvement in the basic design leading to an efficient and economical
human powered transport systemsuitable for Indian conditions.

Wishful Thinking : This project can be taken jointly under CPDM/Centre

for Sustainable Technology. This exercise should also be seen as a
technological assistance to millions of poor people dependent on RICKSAWs
for their livelihood in several states. An efficiently designed Trycycle would
also have overseas market in many developing countries.

9.5 Views of Starting a new Department of BIOMECHANICS in the

Institute.
Such a department can attract many bright Civil Engineering graduates
with strong interest in mechanics . This would help youngsters taking up
Civil Engineering as an alternative discipline for taking up higher studies
and providing wider employment opportunities.
