Unit 2: Developing Drawing Skills
Project 3: Non-Objective Charcoal Drawing

Unit Objectives:
SWBAT practice, use, and develop various basic drawing skills to complete contour drawings, blind contour drawings, double blind contour drawings,valuescales,texture
squares, a still life drawing and a large abstract charcoal drawing.
SWBAT apply these skills to a varietyofdifferentdrawingmediabyusingpencil,compressedcharcoal,ink,andevenwatercolorpainttocompletevariousprojectsthroughout
Unit 2: Developing Drawing Skills.
SWBAT draw what they see, not what they know, by learning to look closely and observe a still life object and develop their hand-eye coordination tobegintodrawobjects
accurately and proportionally.

Project Objectives:
SWBAT complete a large, abstract charcoal drawing by:
Photographing the completed Still Life Drawing with a flat perspective.Takethephotofromabovelookingdownontothedrawingorhangthedrawingonthewall
and photograph from in front. (I may photograph it and print it for you.)
Transforming this original Still Life photo into a Non-objective, or abstract composition.
Use scissors or tear the copy into random, small, medium, and large pieces.
Reassembling the pieces of the original drawing to create an interesting composition:
Look for lines that flow and Consider Elements & Principles of Design when reassembling: balance, movement, etc.
Use a glue stick or glue and a brush to glue the reassembled pieces onto a base paper.
Write your name on the back of the base paper and make sure you hand it in on my desk at the end of each class.
Transferring this newly assembled reference photo onto onto your final paper using pencil.
Start by mapping out major lines or shapes lightly using pencil and look at where these lines or shapes hit the edge of your paper on the reference image.
Continue to Recreate all areas of your reference drawing onto this much larger scale paper lightly using pencil.
Applying CHarcoal to final paper.
Once the pencil transfer is complete, begin thecharcoalapplicationbyusingcharcoalpencilsandcompressedcharcoaltodevelopvaluesthroughoutyour
drawing.
Use a blending stump, your fingers, or paper towels to create smooth transitions in value and the largest range of values possible; minimum of 8 values.
You may want to work fromlighttodarkordarktolight;Onceagain,youareworkingaroundyourentiredrawingandbuildingupvaluesjustlikeyou
did in your still life.
When finished, Spray with fixative to maintain charcoal qualities/appearance and to avoid any smudging.
Completing a Self-Reflection statement and assessing yourself on the expectations provided by completing the Self-Assessment rubric.
