JUSTIFICATION
The design concept of this portfolio template is meant to be representational of the work shown within. This includes conveying a sense of simplicity and
sophistication with clean, modern text and a restrained aesthetic. The crisp white background and minimal color variations allows the portfolio material to be the
focus. The torn out pieces on the Cover and Thank You pages provide a peek into the portfolios playful take on modern design. The Project Menu was
intentionally kept minimal with refined buttons that make wayfinding easy. Each button tells the name of the project and the its class affiliation. Each page includes
navigation to move forward, backward or return home to the main projects page. This allows the viewer to move about the project at their own leisure. If a
particular project is of interest immediately upon entering the Project Menu; the viewer can simply click on it. The buttons also serve as a reminder of the portfolio
material: functional and attractive but without fuss.
Each project starts off with an introduction to the floor plan; a vital component to any portfolio. The floor plans are not only indicative of technical abilities in
various software but also showcase the ability to space plan, design within code and interrogation of user experience. The floor plans also show materials used in
the project and ADA clearances/considerations. While there is a multitude of information for each project; each page shows restraint by highlighting the most
important parts of each design. This includes color, select furnishings and fixtures, 3D renderings and elevations of millwork. The text is meant to explain the design
problem and solution without being overwhelming on each page.
This portfolio shows 3 years of incredibly hard work, the ability to organize past work and constantly revise and reconsider work that has been completed. While
it would have been easy to just place completed projects in this portfolio as is; the evolution of each project only made this portfolio stronger.
Community and global awareness was a huge consideration of the Senior Studio II project. With a rapid growth in senior citizens over the next decade; it will
become critical to examine how we house the aging population. This portfolio will hopefully help accomplish the next step which is entry into an aggressive graduate
program. A graduate degree in a specialized topic such as the one presented in Senior Studio II will allow real change to happen in Portland, ME.

INTERNSHIP-SOLO PROJECT
DESIGN PROBLEM:
After living in their home with several design
obstacles for over thirty years; the Lepages were
ready for a change. With only one bathroom to
accommodate four children; the first request was an
on suite master bathroom as well as an additional
guest bathroom. There were basic hanging rods in a
large, unfinished attic that they wanted to turn into a
walk in closet. Other requests included new flooring,
custom millwork, new paint throughout and new
hardware.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
The Lepages wanted a light and airy 2nd floor so we
chose a muted palette with soft greens and creamy
whites. By gutting the entire 2nd floor and starting
over with fresh materials; we were able to completely
change the tone of the house. Textured, organic
finishes, bright chrome fixtures and a massive walk in
closet helped to create a spectacular 2nd floor oasis.
FINAL FLOOR PLAN furnishings so it was important that the 2nd floor didnt fight with the 1st floor which
L E PA G E R E S I D E N C E was to remain. Although both clients wanted to modernize the upstairs; it was
important that they maintain a blended aesthetic. To accomplish this we used an Ash
Flooring product that matched what they had on the 1st floor and stair treads. The
COLOR
first floor was painted in a beige color so we worked from that palette to achieve a
cleaner, brighter color palette upstairs. In the master bathroom, we built off the
green wall color with green toned mosaics and lightened things up with white subway
tile. The matte finish on the tile provided texture and kept the large shower feeling Shower Wall Accent
soft. To continue the organic feel of the bathrooms, a 12x24 stone tile was used that
Master and Guest Trim, Millwork, Master and Guest had slight movement. Added storage was provided by turning the old closet in the
Bedroom Ceilings and Hall Bathroom master into a large walk-in linen closet. Shelving on two of the walls allows plenty of
room for both sheets and linens. A small closet was built into the guest for resale
value and a space for the washer/dryer was carved into the guest bathroom.

DESIGN PROBLEM:
Obstacles in this design included 24 ceilings, noise control 4
and privacy for executive offices on the second floor. 5
While the building was essentially a wide open space to
design; existing elements such as columns, stairs,
bathrooms and an elevator required consideration. Since 9
this is a graphic design firm; a bold statement was
required immediately upon entering with original work

scattered throughout.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
1
Working spaces and collaborative spaces are separated
by creative architectural elements. Rather than simply
using wall and cutting off access to light; white oak slats
were introduced into the design to provide separation,
texture and visual interest. The furnishings and wall colors 3
are fairly neutral which allows select color to create a 7 8
dynamic feel in each space. A bold entrance was created
by using powerful graphics, bright green slats which reach
the ceiling and an original reception desk.

MECCA HOTEL
DESIGN SOLUTION:
The Mecca Hotel is a flagship hotel in Chicago,
Illinois. The primary objective of the hotel design
and branding is to attract International business
clients through applications of technology and
innovation while promoting a retreat from
corporate chaos. A Scandinavian Modern aesthetic
will create a clean, crisp and organically balanced
interior. The natural approach to design will
provide connectivity to the outdoor elements and
will soothe the mind and soul of business travelers.
With a total of 21,423 square feet; the design
needed to incorporate 14 king rooms and 14
double rooms. Mecca Hotel amenities required
were the following: lobby that showcased brand
identity, a small bar/caf area with a kitchen, ADA
accessible rooms with king or double beds, a small
retail gift shop and a managers office. Services
required by the interior designer were: research,
code requirements, prototype sketches, adjacencies,
floor plan options, furniture layouts, study models,
furniture, finishes, equipment, and life-cycle cost
analysis.

MECCA HOTEL
DESIGN NOTES:
The bar at a hotel is meant to
accomplish three main goals:
excite customers, bring in
additional revenue and
reinforce the hotels brand. This
sultry bar/restaurant builds off
the design in the
reception/waiting area while
adding some surprises such as
wall to ceiling bar storage, over
the top chandeliers, private
seating coves and tantalizing
artwork.
STARK RESIDENCE
RESIDENTIAL DESIGN I
DESIGN PROBLEM:
Rob and Brienne Stark are a young couple who love to
entertain and frequently have house guests. While
they wanted an upscale space; they also wanted it to
be inviting and comfortable. They preferred no
television in the living room but would like to have one
in their bedroom. Brienne loves to cook so the kitchen
must be practical with finishes that are easy to
maintain and clean. Other design priorities: house must
have lots of light, incorporate natural elements (since
they live in an urban setting they prefer to try and
bring nature to them) and must feel energetic and
uplifting.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
To accommodate Briennes love of cooking; a large
kitchen was designed that had easy to clean finishes
such as a stainless steel counter and a tile backsplash.
The cabinets have a multi-coat lacquer finish to extend
longevity. The first floor was designed to be
exclusively for entertaining. Guest spaces are reserved
for the 2nd floor. The 3rd floor is devoted to the master
suite with a large home office and a roof deck. Since
Rob and Brienne have company often; it was crucial to
have separate space from guests. Fabrics are all
rated for heavy wear, the color palette is light and
bright and furnishings are simple and spacious. FLOOR PLAN-2nd FLOOR FLOOR PLAN-3rd FLOOR

DESIGN NOTES:
The kitchen was the most important part of the project for clients Rob and Brienne Stark as cooking is a
huge part of their life. Requirements for the kitchen were the following: a large sink that could
accommodate saut pans, plenty of storage for utensils, double roll-out trash, a cookie tray divider in
a small cabinet and a panel for the dishwasher. Brienne wanted the range in the island so that cooking
could be more of a show when entertaining guests. Cabinetry was inset installation, site painted with
a natural finish interior.
RESEARCH PHASE
SENIOR STUDIO II
COLOR THEORY:
Red, green, yellow and blue tend to look
muted to seniors who are over the age of 65.
Degeneration of the eye often creates a
yellow film over colors that are comprised
of two primary colors (such as green which is a
mix of yellow and blue). High contrast works
best in terms of wayfinding and depth
perception. The color palette will be a series
of high contrast pairings as seen to the left.
Soft blues, violets and muted greens are often
recommended for long term care facilities.
Blue is consistently favored in the 65+ age
population and has been proven to lower
blood pressure and anxiety.
RESEARCH PHASE
SENIOR STUDIO II
VERSATILE FABRICS/MATERIALS
THAT FUNCTION WELL:
High contrast fabrics in primary colors
will allow seniors to define where
furniture begins and the flooring ends;
a common problem once sight begins
to decline. All fabrics will be 100%
linen for stability, colorfastness, stain
resistance and longevity. Oak flooring
in a pickled white finish allows
wayfinding elements to stand out
without compromising design integrity.
