ABSTRACT

With rising complexity and globalization, technology has gained more significance. In the
fast-changing competitive environment latest technology and its imperative for maintaining
quality standards is much required. Todays business house warrants for modern technology
and its proper management is too required. In context to management of technology two
aspects related to same are important: Firstly, selection of appropriate /suitable technology
and secondly effective management of technology. Selection of technology can be regarded as
a good match between technology utilized and resources required.However, second aspect
needs to be more focused to understand the effective management of technology in order to
capitalize to its maximum and alsomonitoring in a real-time basis after technology
implementation.

In era of technological world installation of new technology is not difficult task (due to
innumerable alternatives available both indigenously as well as internationally), but its
management and efficient utilization is a point to concentrate. Coal mining sector in India is
one of core sectors which are far behind comparing with global standards in spite of
implementation of best technology. Presently, open cast coal mining industries are warrants
for state of art technology. Researchers found that public sector coal mining industries are
lacking in effective management of technology and consequently are not able to justify
returns on investment. The problem lies in implementation that is effective management of
the installed technology. The way in which internal planning and implementation processes
are managed could greatly influence the outcomes of new technology. Technology
implementation and planning refers to the extent how the organization has strategically
designed the deployment of new technology(s) prior to its implementation.

This study attempts to highlight the problems encountered in management of technology,

right from its adoption, implementation to its productive utilization. Background of the
research is based on managerial issues related to the effective management of technology and
for this purpose Central Coalfields limited (CCL) and their open cast mines located at
Jharkhand is selected. The research concentrates on identification of variables that effect
production of coal and management of technology. It would be done with the help of
academic research, inputs from senior level experts and extensive literature survey. Problem
identification and its validation are taken care of through application of various Statistical
tools (with the help of SPSS package). Finally, the processes incorporated within this
research design influence the overall effectiveness of technology deployment and its efficient
utilization. This research helps to understand and assess overall reasons for low productivity
of coal in open cast mines and suggest suitable remedial measures towards effective
management of new technology.
