Issue/Topic: Smoking in Public Areas

Background:
Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke of burning tobacco encased in cigarettes, pipes, and
cigars. Casual smoking is the act of smoking only occasionally, usually in a social situation or
to relieve stress. A smoking habit is a physical addiction to tobacco products. Many health
experts now regard habitual smoking as a psychological addiction. Smoking is bad for your
health. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent
of lung cancer deaths. It is also responsible for many other cancers and health problems.
Based on Journal of the American Medical Association, Mokdad AH, Marks JS, Stroup
DF, Gerberding JL (2014) said that Smoking causes more deaths each year than the following
causes combined Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Illegal drug use, Alcohol use, Motor
vehicle injuries and Firearm-related incidents. Then, smoking also increases the risk of dying
from cancer and other diseases in cancer patients and survivors. If nobody smoked, one of
every three cancer deaths in the United States would not happen. Its revealed by U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services (2014).
But, what is the problem is when all this type of effect can be affected to smokers also
can get into the non-smoking person. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), 46 percent of non-smokers experience some degree of adverse effects from
exposure to secondhand smoke. Obviously, the risk for health problems from tobacco use itself
is much greater than from secondhand exposure. The greatest contrast between smoking and
nonsmoking is that most smokers become addicted to nicotine, and most nonsmokers do not.
But in irony, smoking does not just affect the smoker; secondhand smoke negatively affects
family, friends and associates. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that 438,000 deaths
are attributed to cigarette smoking each year; an additional 38,000 deaths are caused by
secondhand smoke. Based on the all research above, our group are going to discuss on topic
that smoking in public area are allowed or should be prohibited.
Purpose:
The purpose of this documentation is to observe the habits of the people that smokes in public
areas. Besides, this investigation is important to find out the implications of the nonsmokers
that exposed to the secondhand smoke from others in public place. This investigation will
involve several people to know their opinions about smoking in the public area that can affects
to the civilian.
