ehotina or otina (as it is often called by citizens of Pljevlja) is a

mountainous, salmon river. Fast, but sometimes can slow down, so

much that sometimes reminds of lowland river. This river can go wild,
with spring, and carries all in front of her, but still it is one of the gentle
mountain rivers.
ehotina (otina) is the main water artery of Pljevlja. Its length is
130 km, of which 93 km in the territory of Montenegro, and almost that
entire part belongs to the municipality of Pljevlja. Its source is below
the mountain Stoer, at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level, and
its mouth is at an altitude of 385 meters above sea level, which means
that its height difference between the source and the mouth is 815 me-
ters. Her flow is directed towards the north-west giving water to river
Drina, near Foa.

ehotina (otina) on Vrulja begins to look like a real river.

Here, in Vruljas field, it joins her the river called Otoka, and from
that point ehotina. A couple of kilometers downstream, e-
hotina joins leaps and cascade, very nice, Kozika river.

From there, already strengthened by Kozika river, ehotina
is flowing through a very beautiful canyon Krakalice, where
everything exudes by an untouched nature and wildlife.

Fly fishing revir on ehotina river

 Since year of 2008 that part is declared for a fly fishing min-
ing district, and its stretching from the mouth of the Kozika river
to the beginning of artificial accumulation Otilovii. In the
canyon district of Krakalica, ehotina receives another compan-
ion, the river Maonica, once famous for large saplings that were
spawn in it. Maonica flows through the famous Maoko field,
which is whole under the coal and whose faith is very certain
to become the new mining pit.
From Maonica, about 5 km downstream, reaches the place
Zemunac, where there is a bridge and where rapids of otina are
slowly beginning to settle down, starts the accumulation
Otilovii.

Accumulation Otilovii

The accumulation Otilovii arise from the need of power plant

of Pljevlja, but the water from this lake is also used for water supply
of the city. The lake was formed by immersion of one of the most
beautiful terrain on the river ehotina. It is situated 5 km upstream
the river ehotina from Plevlja. It is long about 11 km. Although ar-
tificial, it succeded to fit the environment, there are a lot of curves
and viaducts, which is a very interesting phenomenon in nature. Of
the fish stocks in the lake are represented: chub the most, trout
(there are even copies about 30 kg), rainbow trout, nase, gudgeon,
boar. The lake is perfect for fishing, swimming, boating and sight-
seeing, as it is situated in the magnificient canyon above which there
is an old monastery Duboica, that during the formation of the lake
is transferred to a higher elevation, on a cliff above the canyon lake.
On the lake is built a fishing trail and a fishing home, where is or-
ganized an annual fishing competition on the float.

Below the dam Otilovii, ehotina continues its natural path,
quite vigorously, more furious and colder. Again flows through the
magnificient canyon, and than encounters a more pleasant part of
the village Rabitlje, where slows down and makes quite spacious si-
lence.

 In Rabitlje, ehotina is going wild again through vertical canyon,
making plenty of beautiful scenery and landscapes, which a rare num-
ber of persons dreams about.

 Unfortunately, people have not given her full freedom and at the
end of the canyon shes damaged again, they tamed her. In the year of
2008, on ehotina is built another accumulation, now for needs of mine
of coal. By raising an non-pipelined dam, they raised her level up to the
level of a tunnel through which she flows now. At the exit of the tunnel
waits her the artificial bed,canneled and deep.

This large cascade dev-
astates the flow of the river, and the most negative effect has on the
fish population, which, during spawning, cant go further from this
place.

It is now already in the city of Pljevlja, and shes not asking much.
Here joins her her right urban friend, sanged in songs, river Breznica. In
the upper reaches Breznica represents a beautiful image of the face of
the city, but downstream of the town, near the mouth of ehotina, is
the main collector of municipal sewage and landfill of citizens. It isnt
up to Breznica, it is the cheek of citizens of Pljevlja. From that mouth to
the mouth of once upon radioactive Vezinica, ehotina runs through
evarsko gentle field, where soon will be carry out its bed regulation. In

But ehotina continues to run The way joins her right tribu-
tary Jugotica, a small river, from whose source is supplying a part of the
city with drinking water.
otina still flows through the canyon scenery, along whose bed
leads a road to the village Gradac. The vicinity of the road helped un-
scrupulous people to dispose garbage on its banks.
 Coming out of the canyon meets Brveniko field, where again
calms down and there joins her the right tributary, clear and clean Go-
tovuka river, where there are several mills, which still grind grain and
work.

Downstream, about 6-7 km, ehotina increases by the river
Voloder, her longest and largest tributary.

 Voloder is unpolluted through the whole flew and represents a
natural spawning ground for trout, young man and nases. From the
mouth of Voloder, otina becomes much richer with fish species, and
much cleaner and clearer.
About 4 km downstream from Voloder, in a place called Gornji
Gradac, in otina flows river Vrelo.

 Then, otina passes through the former mining village Gradac,
where there is another black environmental point, tailing of lead
and zinc, next to the river. At this tailing ten years ago rain broke the
dam, so the water from tailings flow directly into ehotina, with all
heavy metals that picks up along the way.

At Gradac, ehotina
increases with another

menica, and than passes
through the third tunnel
and maybe because of
these tunnels ehotina
is unique in the world
(runs through three
tunnels).
Downstream of this
tunnel otina becomes
again a free river, with its
natural streams, and a
paradise for fishers.
 Breaking through beautiful landscapes, made from canyon cliffs
covered with dense vegetation, which is going down to the river, e-
hotina is rushing into arms of Drina. But, before that, take turns in the
canyon wilderness and natural
beauties, canyon and ports,
slow and rapid water, in which
masters sprout, trout and
grayling. Further, otina goes
through the next places:
Badovine, Mala otina, Proe,
Jelice, Tatarovine and Viko.

there were once mills in nearby
streams (badnji, from whose
name Badovina).
In the place called Mala
otina, the river becomes wild,
makes its ways through narrow
gorges, and because of her nar-
row bed in this area was named

In Proe, ehotina is welcomed by another large port and a sus-
pension bridge. Then, continues to Jelice, the most beautiful part of the
river bottom.

In Jelice are alternating beautiful terrains for fishing, fly fishing and
a relaxation for eyes. There are also several tributaries of ehotina, that
intersect with it over waterfalls, and an adventurous string bridge. In
Jelice there is also an attractive well, called Badanj, because in a shape
of a miller whell breaks out on the right side of ehotina, from its bed.

From Jelica, otina goes further to the beautiful canyon, built of
natural reddish rock sculptures, and thats the fact why was this canyon
named Crvene stijene (Red rocks). Coming out from Crvene stijene, in
ehotina flows in left tributary klopotnica, and from there its left side
goes into the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 With her right side ehotina belongs to Montenegro for an-
other 10 km downstream, where ehotina is undergoing through
the place Tatarovina, where there is a large port which may be
reached with car. There, on the right side of otina affects another
little tributary, and ehotina catches there a big curve, the biggest
on its flow, and than flows through the impassable canyon to the
next port of Milovci, where it flows the right tributary Krava. From
Krava to the place Viko, the right side of ehotina is Montene-
grin, and from
Viko, both sides
belong to Bosnia.
Here ends the
story of unde-
stroyable river of
Pljevlja, and con-
tinues the story of
Foas beauty,
which collides in
Foa with the
river Drina and
from that point ehotina flows in Drina
begins the song:
Two waters breaks apart, ehotina and the cold Drina
For its specificity and struggle to survive, there is no similar river
as ehotina. Her ability of self-purification, due to the rich vegeta-
tion that goes down to the river and because of long releases that
largely selects the mud and dirt, making natural precipitators, ranks
ehotina in the line of rivers with great ability of independence, de-
spite human carelessness and selfishness. Sometimes, known in Eu-
rope as the most natural and most suitable spawning of salmonid
fish, was coming to the border of sustainability. She managed to de-
fend itself from so many pollutants (power plants, coal mine, wood
processing, municipal waste, poaching and destruction of flora and
fauna of the river), and therefore deserves attention and respect, and
let the younger generations a lesson in which way their predeces-
sors tried to destroy such a river.
