When Julia Louis-Dreyfus is told that she could very

well be one of the most significant female forces on network
television today, there’s a pregnant pause. “Really?” She chuck-
les with disbelief. “Really?”
It would certainly fit. Louis-Dreyfus didn’t just storm the comedy fortress
back in the ’90s playing the spirited yet sardonic Elaine on NBC’s Seinfeld,
she managed to collect some gold along the way, too—an Emmy, a Golden
Globe, three SAG Awards and just as many American Comedy Awards. And
she hasn’t been doing too bad in the post-Seinfeld era, either. Even after
2003’s Watching Ellie, a sitcom that never took flight, the actress is now the
only castmember of the famed series to have found the appropriate anec-
dote for that notorious Seinfeld “curse.”

Emmy-winner’s involvement with Heal the Bay
(healthebay.org), a dynamic nonprofit dedicat-
ed to making Southern California coastal waters
and watersheds, especially Santa Monica Bay,
clean, safe and healthy, is commendable. She
also has strong ties to the Natural Resources
Defense Council (nrdc.org), an organization
whose mission is paramount: protect the
planet’s wildlife and pristine locales as well
as ensure the safety and health of the en-
vironment.

Broken Embraces
Mateo Blanco was once a
film director before a tragic
and the life of Lena, his lover
and leading lady. Now he
writes screenplays under the
pseudonym Harry Caine. News
of the death of Ernesto Martel,
an elderly business tycoon, is
mere prologue to a gripping
story that Mateo/Harry relates
to his devoted agent’s son. It is
a melodrama worthy of director
Douglas Sirk, in which Lena
(Penelope Cruz), a sometime
call girl and aspiring actress,
and who is Ernesto’s mistress,
auditions for Mateo’s film, and
becomes his lover, while Ernesto
diabolically keeps tabs on her.
Broken Embraces is a saga of
love, obsession, jealousy and
betrayal played out in a hot-
house environment of primary
colors, principally red (Almodóvar
is a director who has always seen
the world in high-definition).
Almodóvar’s passion for film is
palpable in every frame. There
are references to other films
(Peeping Tom) and screen
icons from Hollywood’s golden
era (Charlie Chaplin, Audrey
Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe).
This is one of Almodóvar’s most
accessible films and one that film
lovers especially will embrace.

The Princess and the Frog/Ponyo
Traditional hand-drawn animation
lives in Disney’s The Princess
and the Frog and Ponyo. Both
films were inspired by Hans
Christian Andersen fairy tales.
The Princess and the Frog is a
Creole-flavored adaptation of
The Frog Prince set in 1930s New
Orleans and featuring Disney’s
first African-American princess,
a hard-working girl who dreams
of opening her own restaurant.
Ponyo is a magical re-telling of
The Little Mermaid. Both also
boast stellar voice casts (Oprah
Winfrey and Terrance Howard
in Princess and Matt Damon
and Tina Fey in Ponyo). But
blessedly, these films are not
about star power or gratuitous
pop culture references. They tell
wondrous stories that transport
viewers to magical places. For old
school animation buffs weary of
computer animation, both are a
dream come true. Rated G.
The Blind Side
Based on author Michael Lewis’
non-fiction book, and directed
by John Lee Hancock, The Blind
Side is as winning and inspirational
as Hancock’s previous human-
interest sports films The Rookie
and Remember the Titans. As with
those films, The Blind Side is based
on a remarkable true story. Sandra
Bullock portrays Leigh Anne Tuohy,
a formidable wife, mother, and
businesswoman, who takes in
Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), a
homeless black teenager with little
social skills and a o.6 grade point
average. A local Christian academy
accepts Michael (at the urging of
the school’s football coach) and
with the help of his teachers and
the Tuohy family’s unconditional
love, Michael blossoms. He is
initially a bust on the gridiron, but
Leigh Anne gives him a “protect
the family” pep talk and he
becomes a football sensation. (The
Baltimore Ravens drafted Oher in
the first round last year.) There are
no trick plays here. Very little that
happens will blind side you, but
the film is a definite crowd-pleaser.
Rated PG-13.
Sherlock Holmes
The game, as they say, is afoot in
director Guy Ritchie’s modern take
on Arthur Conan Doyle’s master
sleuth. This is not your grandfather’s
Sherlock Holmes. This is a special
effects bonanza with spectacular
action set pieces out of an Indiana
Jones adventure. Suffice to say that
this is the first Holmes who would
be able to hold his own in Fight
Club. In his Golden Globe-winning
performance, Robert Downey, Jr.
is a buff and hot-wired Holmes.
His mind is as keen as ever and his
deductive skills as astounding, but
he is a lethargic wreck when not
working on a case, and seems very
put out that his faithful sidekick,
Dr. Watson (Jude Law) is going to
propose to his girlfriend and move
out of 221B Baker Street. Holmes
gets a new lease on life with the
seeming resurrection of the fiendish
Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong),
whom Watson pronounced dead
at the villain’s execution. Holmes is
also intrigued by Irene Adler (Rachel
McAdams), a mysterious woman
in whom he meets his match. This
Sherlock Holmes is a revisionist blast
that is anything but elementary.
