Jada Pinkett Smith doesn’t flinch when she’s asked what her
greatest strength might be. “Endurance,” she says with conviction.
“Resilience is probably my biggest strength.”

M ost people would leave it at that. But not
Pinkett Smith. That’s because, unlike most
people, the actress-producer and star of TNT’s
hit medical drama HawthoRNe, doesn’t avoid looking at
the flipside of things.
“My weakness,” she goes on before I can even ask the
question, “is, well … in having the strength of endurance,
there are certain characteristics you take on that don’t allow
the ‘wall’ to crack and let things hurt you. You know what I
mean? Sometimes, I am not as open as I should be. I can
have a very ‘My way is the only way’ attitude.”
She’s quiet for a moment. “I have a lot of weaknesses.”
Welcome to the refreshingly candid universe of Ms.
Pinkett Smith, a place where love shines, family rules and
career is just a natural extension of one’s “mission” in
life to spread some good in the world. It’s a colorful
kaleidoscope of positiveness and it works really well for
the lady, mostly because she possesses something that is
truly irresistible: Guts.
“My grandmother [Marion Banfield] taught me there
was nothing I could not do, and I honestly believed that,”
Pinkett Smith says. “Growing up, a little girl from Baltimore,
Maryland, who was the product of two parents who were
drug addicts, to be able to do what I’ve done, really comes
from my grandmother instilling in me from day one, that
there was nothing I could not do. She made me believe
that I was the best at everything. So, somebody telling me
I could not do something, was just not real to me.”
Looking back on it now makes her laugh. “I’m telling
people, ‘Oh, I’m going to Hollywood to be a star,’ and
they’re going, ‘Hmm … don’t know how that’s going to
work out.’ I’m like, ‘Well, that’s your problem. I know how I
am going to do it!’”
And that she did.
After excelling at Baltimore School for the Arts and
North Carolina School for the Arts, Pinkett Smith hit Hol-
lywood and by 1990, landed bit roles in a number of televi-
sion shows, eventually capturing mainstream attention in t
he Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World. >>

d!: What makes you laugh most?
JPS: Probably my husband. I think that’s
one of the reasons he’s in my life. When
we first met, I did not think he was funny
at all. I think it took me a year and a half
before I laughed at anything. I don’t think
I got his sense of humor. And now, I’m
telling you, all day long … because
he is just the silliest person on
the planet. He makes life
really fun.
d!: One of your favorite

What followed was an empowering evolution,
both personally and professionally. She married ac-
tor-singer-heartthrob Will Smith in 1997, and spent
some time creating a name for herself in notewor-
thy ventures like the Nutty Professor, Bamboozled
and the Matrix films, to note just a few, as she did
behind the scenes as a producer—2003’s UPN/CW
All of Us, which the couple created and produced,
and which “loosely” resembled their own lives.
She was also one of the executive producers of the
2008 tearjerker, The Secret Lives of Bees. Along the
way, she and Smith had two children, Jaden and
Willow—the actress is also step-mom to Smith’s
son, Trey, from a previous marriage.
It’s 12-year-old Jaden though, whom
the couple seems to be jazzed about
this summer, mainly because they are
the producers of the upcoming Kara-
te Kid redux in which their son stars
HawthoRNe is definitely the perfect creative
playground for her. The popular series, which also
stars Michael Vartan (Alias), begins its sophomore
season this month. It passionately showcases a
head-strong, widowed chief nurse (Christina Haw-
thorne) battling tough cases at work and even
tougher attitudes from her teenaged daughter at
home. “I call Christina the altruist warrior because
the woman is willing to sacrifice so much for people
outside of herself,” Pinkett Smith says of the role.
“She’s willing to go to battle. It’s a very, very noble
quality to have.”
It’s also one Pinkett Smith, now 39, strives to em-
ulate in the real world, too, especially with her fam-
ily. “One of my jobs as the mother of the family is to
make sure that everybody has what they need; to
make sure Jaden, especially now, is taken care of as
far as his emotional, physical and spiritual needs,”
she says with conviction. “We do everything as a
family. Our business is a family business. We do it
so that the family prospers.”
That fortitude may be the driving force behind
the Smiths’ own noble enterprise, The Will and
Jada Smith Family Foundation. The Baltimore,
Maryland-based charity assists youth in inner cities
and offers “family” support, among other notewor-
thy services.
“For Will and I, it was very important that we
gave back to the community in a very grassroots
way,” Pinkett Smith reflects about the organiza-
tion. “Being from the background we come from—
very modest ones, to say the least—I’ve known my

The Imaginarium of Doctor
Parnassus
Director Terry Gilliam makes his
case for imagination with his own
bit of wonderland. Christopher
Plummer stars as the title character,
who operates a run-down traveling
show in modern-day England

(Andrew Garfield) and Percy (Verne
Troyer), a dwarf. The immortal
Parnassus is engaged in a running
wager with Mr. Nick (a devilish
Tom Waits) to see who can collect
the most souls. People who pass
through Parnassus’ stage mirror are
given a choice to follow their bliss
or give in to their baser desires. At
stake is Valentina, whom Mr. Nick
is poised to claim. In his last film,
Heath Ledger costars as Tony, a
disgraced philanthropist. Ledger
died before filming was completed,
and Gilliam considered abandoning
the project. Enter Johnny Depp,
Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, who
portray incarnations of Ledger’s
character in the world behind the
mirror. For those like Parnassus,
and Gilliam, who choose a world

Green Zone
The Green Zone refers to the
American enclave in Baghdad,
where an Army Chief Warrant

leads the search for the weapons
of mass destruction. With each
unsuccessful attempt, his faith
in the “intel” weakens and he
becomes determined to find the
truth. As with the comparable

Hurt Locker, the soldiers are
given thoughtful and respectful
treatment. The villains, as it were,

Journal correspondent (Amy
Ryan) and a Defense Intelligence
agent (Greg Kinnear) whose
agenda becomes increasingly
suspect. The Green Zone was
inspired by the celebrated non-
fiction book, Imperial Life in
the Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s
Green Zone. Though the script is
fiction, the real-life parallels are
presented in Greengrass’s signature
documentary style. Beyond politics,
if you’re looking for an explosive
thriller, mission accomplished.

and when one molecule of sodium is removed, it takes
one molecule of calcium with it! Get smart about salt
by reading labels (would it surprise you to know that
a bowl of Cheerios has more sodium than a serving of

to maintain optimum calcium levels.

(and sweat more) than people who aren’t in shape? Fit people’s bodies
are very efficient at cooling, the whole reason we sweat. But not all
sweat is good. If your clothes smell like ammonia after you work out,
you could be burning protein, rather than carbs or fat. Make sure you
include plenty of smart carbs (not simple carbs) in your diet so your
body burns those first and foremost.
