MID AUTUMN SEMESTER EXAMINATION-2012
Date: Time: 2 hours Full Marks: 60 No. of Students: 253
Sub. Name: Signals & Networks
Sub. No. EE21101
Instructions: Answer all the questions.

1. (a) In the network shown in Fig. QI(a), the value of current of the current source is
i = 5 cos (I OOOt - 90) A . Find the CUlTent flowing through the resistor RL under steady
state condition. (3)
(b) For the same circuit mentioned in Q1(a), the independent de source is replaced by a
dependent source as shown in Fig. Q1(b). The resistance RL is replaced by a load
impedance ZL. Find the value of ZL such that maximum power will be transferred to
the load. (5)

(c) In the network shown in Fig. Ql(c), a steady state is reached with switch 'K'
closed. The switch is opened at time t = 0. Find the values o( the current flowing
through the inductor and the voltage across the capacitor at t = 0+. Also determine the
expression of the current i(t) supplied by the voltage source for t 2: 0. (2+5)

2. (a) Define unit-step and unit-impulse in continuous domain.
(b) For x(t) = 2u(t -1) -3u(t- 2) + 2u(t -4) find the sequence a[k] such that
x(-t+2)= :z=:a[k]5(t-k).
(c) Given the impulse response h(t) of a linear time-invariant (LTI) system obtain its
output to an arbitrary input x(t) .
"(d) Using convolution obtain the step response of a LTI system having an impulse
response of u(t -1) .
(2+4+4+5)

3. (a) Define Fourier series for a periodic signal and explain how the Fourier
coefficients are to be obtained.
(b) Obtain the Fourier series for the train of impulses :z=: 5(t- kT).
(c) Obtain the time-shifting and the Integration properties of Fourier series.
(d) Using the results of (b) and (c) obtain the Fourier coefficients of
x(t) = t, -1 ~ t < 1, with x(t) = x(t + 2).
(3+3+3+6)

4. (a) Define Fourier transform and Inverse Fourier transform.

(b) Show that coscot is an eigen-input for linear time-invariant systems and hence
explain the term frequency response.
(c) What is a Bode plot? The asymptotic approximation ofthe Bode (magnitude) plot
of the frequency response of a system is found to have comer frequencies at w = 0 .1,
1, and 4 rad/s, with the slopes, in db/decade, being -20 for w < 0.1, -40 for
0.1 < w < 1, -20 for 1 < w < 4, and -60 for w > 4. Further, it is seen that (i) the
asymptotic plot magnitude is 20 db at w = 0:1, and (ii) the actual magnitude plot is
lower than the asymptotic one by 3 db for w = 4. Assuming the zeros to be all in the
left half plane, find the transfer function of the system.
(d) Obtain the asymptotic phase plot of the transfer function obtained in (c) above.
