Education and Technology

Broadly defined, education is the process of facilitating learning, or the

acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. As Nelson Mandela
expresses education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change to
world. In addition, nowadays we are surrounded by technology. It is present
everywhere, including education. Technology infuses classrooms with digital learning
tools, such as computers and hand held devices. Although this is a controversial issue
with supporters and opponents, technology should be used in primary school
classrooms.

In the first place, using PCs in primary schools can serve as distractions for
learners, thus diminishing attention and learning. Learning happens best in a
classroom when everyone is actively engaged with one another in the exchange of
information. Students often find the presence of these devices to be distracting and
have the impulse to surf the internet, text, play games or post on Facebook. A study
published in 2013 found that not only the multitasking student do worse on a test, so
did the peers who could see the computer. In other words, computers distracted not
just the laptop user but also the group of students behind the laptop user. As
expressed, utilizing PCs in primary classrooms increases distractions for students and
therefore damaging the learning environment.

An additional drawback is the lack of resources to implement the use of

computers. In many countries, including Argentina, money designated to education is
not enough to buy machines, afford technical support, provide good internet
connectivity and have suitable buildings with proper electricity connection. This is
clearly illustrated by the programme Conectar Igualdad launched in 2010 by the then
President Cristina Fernndez de Kirchner as an initiative of the Argentine Executive
Branch. Millions of laptops have been delivered but most of schools did not have the
conditions and resources to make a good use of them. For this reason, making use of
computers in primary classrooms is not always advisable due to the resources and
conditions problems.

In contrast, computers should be used in primary schools due to the fact that
PCs make learning interactive. Unlike passive forms of technology, such as television or
videos, a computer requires interaction. Students learn from thinking in meaningful
ways and thinking is engaged by activities, which can be fostered by computers.
According to Dr. Bruce D. Perry, an internationally recognized authority on children
brain development computers provide students an interactive experience that
develops curiosity as well as independent thinking. Therefore, the usage of laptops is
essential for learners to take part in the learning process.
A further advantage of introducing laptops in primary schools is to help learners
develop computer skills. Technology has changed the way society functions. Future
generations will have to deal with the growing trends of a technologically-driven
society that relies on computers to perform daily tasks. It is widely maintained that
computer literacy is as important for our children to acquire as any other basic skill
since they will be essential in the professional working place. Thus, applying to laptops
is totally necessary to prepare students to their future job.

Taking everything into account, I firmly believe that technology in its different
forms should be introduced in primary school classrooms. It is obvious that using
technology in primary schools has many benefits, including making learning interactive
and helping students to develop computer skills.
