The rhetorical triangle is based on three main ideas: genre, audience, and

author/creator of a work. The genre of a piece of work can be general (e.g. text,
auditory, visual, multi-modal) and specific (e.g. genre of music, film, or novel). It's
important to know the genre because each genre has its own conventions and it's
important to know whether the author/creator of a work is following said conventions.
This is due to the message that a author may be attempting to communicate if he/she
decides to break convention, as Eminem did.
The audience is key to understanding who the author made the piece for and for what
purpose. For example, Eminem knew his audience, which includes Trump supporters,
and likely alienated them. This is atypical because authors usually write to appeal to
their audience, not the opposite, so knowing the audience gives more insight into the
purpose/thesis of a work.
Knowing the author is important due to the background/life of an artist being important
in knowing where they may have gotten their ideas/beliefs. This can play into
understanding why the author reacts in a certain way to an event, as Eminem did to the
election of Trump in his video "Storm."
