Chasing A Dream

Ever since I was in middle school, it had been my dream to be a teacher. It was always

my goal in life to give back, inspire, and make the same difference in kids lives as the teachers

that I had growing up did in mine. Even though I knew this is what I wanted to do, life got in the

way. People tried to deter me from following my dreams based on the salary I would make or the

lifestyle I would have to live. For some reason, I let what people were saying to me get to me and

hold me back from pursuing my goal. It only took me three years of college to come to the

realization that I am going to school for me, I am doing what makes me happy and ultimately

what I believe my purpose is.

Pizza Fractions
Teacher Ms. Stotts
Subject Math/Art
Grade Level 3rd grade
Time duration 30 minutes
Overview Each student will make his/her own pizza. Each pizza will have 8 slices,
customized however each child chooses whether its cheese, pepperoni
meat, etc. With colored construction paper students, will physically
build their pizza making sure that all 8 slices are filled with something.
Using these slices, kids will learn about fractions as well as associate
fractions will real life

Objective & Goals Understand the idea of fractions as numbers

State Standards Mathematics- Grade 3 (2): Developing understanding of fractions,

especially unit factions

Anticipatory Set Introduce what we will be doing today. Combining art with math and
making pizza fractions. Explain that fractions exist in our lives all around
us and give a couple examples. Ask if anyone knows anything about
fractions or has any examples to share with everyone.

Direct Instruction Talk about how today we will make our own examples and show the 8-
sliced example pizza that I made. Explain to the students that
everyones pizzas can be different, for them to be creative. Hand out
the supplies and allow kids to get started.

Guided Practice While we will work as a class for the first few minutes getting the hang
of how pizza fractions work, students will demonstrate their
understanding by individually answering fraction questions and holding
their whiteboards up so I can make sure everyone understands. Any
student that is confused, I will meet with individually to give any
additional help.

Closure
Take a few minutes and talk in groups about what we learned from the
pizza fractions, then have groups share

Independent Practice After we have practiced as a class, I will give kids a brief worksheet to
answer some pizza fraction questions like we discussed in class
Stotts 11

Required Materials Colored construction paper, round pizza cut out, scissors, markers,
and Equipment crayons, pencils

Assessment/Follow Up After the in-class activity, allow the kids to bring home their pizza and
change the toppings around. With the new pizzas, have the kids answer
the back side to the worksheet that was similar to the questions asked
in class
