dream job. Alissa Brunelli always knew
she wanted to be a photographer, but not
all little girls who spent their childhood
dressing up their neighbours and snapping
their pictures grow to become prolific
nude photographers. Brunellis work can
be seen largely in Tattoo magazine and on
SuicideGirls.com, a popular website that
shows off alternative, pin-up style models.
She has a unique ability to make you feel
as though youve stumbled upon a private,
erotic moment that the model secretly
wanted to share with you, anyway.
But taking pictures of beautiful naked
women isnt all funits an incredibly
involved process. We caught up with
the photographer whos shot over 1,500
scantily-clad ladies to get the lowdown on
the importance of confidence, on-set horror
stories and what its like to know thousands
of guys are aroused by your art.
Your photos are pretty racy. Lots
of gorgeous, often-naked, tattooed
women. What is it that draws you to this
particular subject matter?
I was working at a tattoo studio, and I like
shooting girls in fashion and stuff like that
in general, anyway. I met a girl who was
a Suicide Girl who came into the shop to
get tattooed. Basically, she was like, You
should shoot me for SuicideGirls and I
felt, Oh my God! This is what I was meant

to do. And I pretty much started shooting
nude completely from that point on. It was
maybe in 2005.
What was it you liked so much about
shooting nude girls?
It was a lot less intimidating than I first
expected, and its a fun, intimate process
where you get to know people. And its very
weird and strange that you become friends
with these people through shooting them
naked. But, literally, every friend I have is a
girl that Ive shot.
What about SuicideGirls in particular
makes you want to shoot for them?
Its interesting. So, basically, SuicideGirls
is a really interesting website because it
has the nudity and the community aspect,
so its the perfect fit for me. It was a social
thing at first that turned into a job.
If youre ever shooting a woman and she
felt uncomfortable, how would you put her
at ease?
Usually I tell silly stories about other things
that have happened at shoots, that maybe
would be considered horror stories, and
usually I get people laughing and feeling
like, Thank God, thats not me. And I tell
the girls that everyone has flaws and stuff
like that. A good photo is all about angles
and shadowing, because everyone has
something worth photographing.
Horror stories? Whats the strangest thing
thats happened to you on set?
Theres so many! Ive been approached by
random strangers, since I tend to shoot
outside a lot. Ive had people block us in
with their cars trying to get photographs
with us, Ive had every bodily fluid you
could possibly imagine on me
So you set the bar pretty low. That would
probably get me to relax.
Yeah, yeah! It definitely makes whatever
youre worried about not that bad.
What do you think your favourite photo
shoot to date has been?
Theres so many I really like shoots based
off movies. Some of the favourite things
Ive done: I recreated the bathtub scene
from The Big Lebowski with a ferret and a
girl, I think that was really fun. Ive done
American Psycho. Any pop culture type of
movie when I can find a girl who is willing
to be a guinea pig, Im all about. Right now,
Im working on a shoot with a girl thats
about the movie Signs. Were going to have
a room full of glasses of water and shes
going to have a little foil hat. Stuff like that
really makes it fun for me.
What do you think the main difference is
between a man photographing a woman,
and a woman photographing a woman?
There are many. Ive heard from the girls

A BEER REVOLUTION
Indian craft brewers and beer brands are stepping up their game, big time.

ON A WARM EVENING, I FOUND MYSELF AT
Quaff, a brewpub in Cybercity, Gurugram,
wanting to try out the latest concoction
they had to offer. The market for craft beer
in India was supposedly going through
an explosion in terms of expansion, but
one certainly wouldnt realise it living in
Gurugram. Over a hundred brewpubs had
sprung across Indias metropolitan cities in
the short span of a decade. Gurugram, one
of Indias biggest beer drinking cities, no
doubt because of its urban-youth culture,
was stuck shuffling between the usual four
styles of beer.
Over the rising din of chatter, I
overheard someone nearby exclaim If
you like Saison, youre a member of the
tribe. Saisons (French for seasons) are
brewed for the summer, when the winters
thaw out. They are fruity, spicy, and low on
bitternessperfect to refresh oneself on a
humid day. Ekta is one such brewery that
hits the complex notes of the Belgian mixed
grain bill. Named because the Sanskrit
word for unity was essentially the same
in Hindi and Kannada, Ekta beers are
strongly rooted in its Indian identityand
have no plans of losing it any time soon.
The Hibiscus Saison available at Quaff was
made as a collaboration between Quaff,
and Ishan Grover (RJ Brewing Solutions),

Their other brew, Pepper and Clove Saison
is available at Lagom. These flavours were
chosen because of the Hibiscus religious
significance and to represent the people of
the farms in India. Pepper and cloves are
also common spices that are commonly
used in the North and the South, crossing
the boundaries of region and ethnicity.
On the other end of the spectrum is
Witlinger and its founders goal to become
a segment leader in the Indian beer market.
Indias first bottled craft beer was launched
in early 2016 and offered two grained
variants: Witlinger Wheat Ale and Witlinger
Lager. The style is that of Belgian wheat
beer, incorporating the flavours commonly
associated with summer to correct the
limited choices the Indian consumer had
when it came to craft beer. Witlinger,
partially filtered, with orange zest and
spices, is easy to wet ones throat.
Maharashtra has been helming the craft
beer scene for a few years now. Gateway
Brewery, launched in 2011, offers a variety
of craft beers across multiple brewpubs
and restaurants in Mumbai. Their beers
carry quirky namesperhaps a reflection of
Gateways attempt to offer its consumers a
global and diverse experience. As Vienna
As It Gets is an interpretation of the toasty
malt lager traditionally brewed in Vienna.
Monks Potion is made with Belgian yeast,
combining the flavours of roasted Indian
coriander seeds and tea to offer a citrusy
flavour to its drinker.
Bira 91, is another first. Launched in
February of 2015, it offers four beers: Bira
91 White, Bira 91 Strong, Bira 91 The IPA
and finally the first of its kind: a low-calorie
beer called Bira 91 Light which only has
90 calories in a 330 ml bottle. At the same
time, Bira 91 Strong is a High Intensity
Wheat Beer that is made with fermented
ale that integrates high honey and caramel
notes with a low bitterness. Bira 91 became
an instant hit among the urban crowd with
its low cost. Ironically, the most surprising
Bira 91 offering is the Indian Pale Ale. IPAs
can be traced back to the 18th century.
Although its gained increasing popularity
all over the world, the IPA hasnt caught
on in the Indian market yet. The Indian
palette is used to pleasant tones that are
easier to drink whereas Bira 91The IPA is
an onslaught of strong tastes. With a high
alcohol content, this IPA combines a flurry
of bitter hops such as cascade, magnum,
and brewers gold, but starts off as a mildly
sweet roll of states, only to finish with a
burst of spice. Its time we tamed the
Indian palette!

The debate on whether sex robots can actually offer real benefits to societyand to womenrages on.

SEX ROBOTS GET A BAD RAP. THEYVE
been labelled unethical and blamed for
perpetuating a culture that objectifies
women. Many ethicists are concerned
that their life-like appearance and fully
functioning genitals pose a threat to
romantic love and human relationships.
But, judging by global sales and by the
innovation thats going into making them
more lifelike, sex robots are here to stay.
Theyre no longer a fantasy from science
fiction. Theyre the real deal. Welcome
to Westworld. So, what are the benefits of
sex robots? Can they advance humanity
positively? And, importantly, are they even
worth discussing anymore?
THE EMPOWERMENT DEBATE
Feminists have their pubes in a knot
because they believe sex robots epitomise
patriarchy. Kathleen Turner, a fellow in
ethics of robotics at De Montfort University
in the U.K., created a Campaign Against
Sex Robots. Her campaign states that sex
robots objectify women and equates the
relationship between sexbot and owner
to that of a sex-worker and a client. The
campaign fails to acknowledge that sex
workers are have jobs and their jobs are
being legalised the world over. It also
fails to acknowledge that male sex robots
already exist, and that they are also being
used by female customers and gay men.
Karley Sciortino, author of the Breathless
column, actually described her experience
with a male sexbot, and wrote: We always
assume men are more likely to enjoy
sleeping with an object and that women
need an emotional connection to enjoy
themselves, but that isnt the case. With
a sexbot you can learn how to make sex
work for you. And thats an empowering
thing for a woman.
THE ETHICAL DEBATE
Theres also been outrage over sex robots

multiple modes like S&M Susan, or Wild
Wendy and Frigid Farrah. Theres a
mode for your peculiar fantasy, and the
companys website states that their robots
allow everyone to realise their most
private sexual dreams. I think that is
progressive and evolved. We can pretend to
live in a world where outlandish and often
crude fantasies dont exist, but the fact
is that they do. And I think many women
would prefer a man explore his fantasy
with a sexbot than another human.
THE COMPANIONSHIP DEBATE
As countless researchers and peoplemen
and womenhave found, sex robots could
be used to provide companionship and
sexual relief to a cross-section of society.
They could help couples manage long-

This exerise hits both heads of the bicep if
done properly. Dont swing that bar back
and forth using your hips as a pendulum.
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart,
knees soft and elbows to your side. Start
with your grip palms up (supinated) on the
inner part of the bar, almost making a V
shape. Push out half of your required rep
range making sure that your elbows stay
put and that your wrists dont compensate,

you need to drop to a lower weight.
Immediately after completing your first half
of your reps, shift your grip to the wider
part of the bar and finish your second half.

SPIDER CURLS
These can be done either on a bench, set
at a 45-degree angle, or on the preacher
curl bench. Again, with your palms facing
up, grip the barbell on the inner part and
curl upwards. Your elbows should either
be pressed up against the preacher bench,
or away from your body if you are on the
normal bench. Once you reach the top of
the movement, tuck your head down and
try to pull the bar over your head. The
tension at the end of this move is what you
are looking for. Hold it for a second and
then let the bar down back to your starting
position. Repeat for the required rep range.
BARBELL 21s
The idea behind this exercise is to split
your reps into 3 sets of 7 each. Use the
cable and straight bar attachment for
this one to switch it up a bit. Using the
supinated grip and your elbows tightly at
your sides, bring the bar up 90-degrees to
your elbows. Repeat that for your first 7
reps. The second set of 7 is done from the
90-degree angle to the top, and contracting
for a second. The third and final set is the
full range of motion, from the bottom right
to the top.
HAMMER CURLS
Using dumbbells, start this movement
standing straight with the weights
comfortably on either side of you, palms
facing your body. Keep this position as
you bring the weight up towards your
chest, remembering to keep your elbows
right at your sides and only really moving
your forearms.
DUMBBELL CURLS UNDER
CONSTANT TENSION
There isnt really a name for this exercise
but this one explains the basic idea. Seating
yourself on a bench that is set just higher
than 45 degrees, your elbows should rest
comfortably away from your body. Using
a supinated grip bring one dumbbell up
90-degrees to your torso, hold and squeeze
the grip while pushing out 5 reps with your
other arm. Alternate until your reps are
done and then start your new set on the
rested arm.
ZOTTMAN CURLS
This variation to your normal bicep curl
engages both heads of the bicep as well
as your forearms. Being with a supinated
grip bicep curl to the top, pause for a
second and then rotate your wrists so that
your palms are now facing downwards
(pronated). Slowly bring the dumbbells
back down to the starting position and
as they reach your thighs turn them in
again so that they are comfortably facing
your body.

1 soft burger bun; 30 g blue cheese
Cook it:
Slice the pear lengthways as finely as you
can. Toss gently with the salad leaves, a little
drizzle each of extra virgin olive oil and red
wine vinegar, and a pinch of black pepper.
Scrunch the minced pork in your clean

into a 1 cm-thick patty. Rub with 1 tsp of
olive oil, then place in a large non-stick
frying pan on a high heat for two minutes,

then, after 2 minutes, crumble the blue
cheese next to it to melt. Move the burger
on top of the oozy cheese, then put it on
your bun base. Stack in as much pear and
salad as the bun will hold, pop the lid on,
squash and devour, with any extra salad
on the side.
Seared Sesame Tuna With
Crunchy Green Veg
Ingredients:
1 heaped tbsp miso paste; 2 x 150 g tuna
steaks; 4 tbsp sesame seeds; 8 spring onions;
150 g sugar snap peas
Cook it:
Place a large non-stick frying pan on a
medium-high heat. Rub the miso all over the
tuna, then pat on the sesame seeds. Place in
the hot pan with 1 tbsp of olive oil and sear
for 1 minutes on each side, so its
beautifully golden on the outside but
blushing in the middle. Remove to a board
to rest. Trim the spring onions and slice at
an angle the same length as the sugar snaps,
tossing both into the hot pan with a few
drips of red wine vinegar and a pinch of sea
salt for two minutes to lightly char. Slice the
sesame tuna and serve on top of the veg,
drizzled with 1 tsp of extra virgin olive oil.
Egg & Mango Chutney Flatbreads
Ingredients:
4 large eggs; 100 g self-raising flour plus
extra for dusting; 6 tbsp natural yoghurt;
2 tbsp mango chutney, 1 fresh red chilli
Cook it: of fresh mint; 6-8 raw king scallops;
Boil eggs for 5 minutes exactly, then 50 g black pudding
refresh under cold water until cool enough

K AYAKING IN THAMARASSERY
Located 30 km inland from the coastal
Kerala town of Kozhikode, Thamarassery
is a sleepy village that stirs up every cloudy
July for an unexpected event that gets
an international footprint of adventure
travellers and kayakers, uncommon to
the rest of Kerala. These junkies come to
town for the popular Malabar International
Kayaking Championshipan annual kayaking
competition that crowns the most successful
manoeuvring on the Iruvanjhipuza River
in different categories. Only, the river is no
sedate unhurried vessel, but a restless sheet
of water scrambling over a rocky bed. What
more could a kayaker want? Amateurs can
always watch and marvel.

EXPLORE BUNDI

 WALKING IN BANLEKHI, KUMAON
The Kumaon hills have started to feel and
show fatigue, save for some faraway villages
like Banlekhi, which offer a back of beyond
experience and a chance to connect with a
simpler life. The highlight of the village is
the namesake pad that has a 180-degree plus
view of the valley in front of the six cottages
of the property. Local food, bonfire and
first row seats to the mountain-cloud chase
makes for a great holiday. Walk through the
Mahesh Khan sanctuary that touches the
back of the property, and go on a mild trek
over the day. Its no classic trek that many
have traipsed around but you might be one
of the few that have shared the trail with
local villagers who come to collect wood.

WHITEWATER RAFTING AT JAYALGARH

Give the usual trope of amateur rafting in
Rishikesh a miss, and drive 96 km further
to a small village called Jayalgarh. At the
Himalayan Eco Lodges Camp Hi-5, a
riverside base, is the perfect springboard to
go rafting, kayaking, cliff jumping, bridge
slithering and a number of other thrilling
water activities. The luxury camp is based
on the banks of the River Alaknanda, that
later joins the Bhagirathi to make the Ganga.
Jayalgarh is the ideal mix of adventure and
relaxed riverside beach camping. While
some are drawn to the unruly waters and
adrenalin rush, some like the meditative
ambience of the sand, lower Himalayan
mountains and the sound of the river.

TREKKING AT NAGGAR
Compared to the frenetic vibe of neighbouring Manali, Naggar is
a haven for those who like a more paced out holiday. Home to the
artist Roerich and the intricately carved Naggar Castle, the town is a
base for some discretionary bikers heading for the overland journey
to Leh. Naggar is also a base for the Chandrakhani-Malana trek that
takes two days. Adventure seekers can start from the high reaches
of Naggar and end the first day by camping on the Chandrakhani
Pass. Next morning, a downhill trek to Malana lands you in the Aryan
village known for rampant marijuana production and strains of Bob
Marleys most popular songs filling the air.

ROCK CLIMBING AT BADAMI
A vast scape of arid brown boulders bleached in the harsh sun might
seem dull to some, but for those who want to learn the ropes of rock
climbing, this is paradise. Badami in Karnataka has long been on the
radar of seasoned rock climbers, and its catching up on the list for
new explorers. The nearby towns of Pattadakal and Aihole make a
historic loop with Badami as they are home to ancient temples dating
back to 7th century and magnificent caves. These detours are worth
your while if you have days and energy to spare.
But the main highlight remains, reaching the craggy topography

With nearly 100 years of bikes under its belt,
can Moto Guzzi finally break into the mainstream?

HERITAGE IS BOTH A HELP AND A
hindrance to Moto Guzzi, the Italian
motorcycle manufacturer with century-old
roots. A rousing start was followed by a
tough era featuring numerous slipups and
near-fatal stumbles that eventually steered
Guzzi to where it is today: a company that
creates eclectic, aesthetically-interesting
bikes typically unseen by the masses.
And thats something the company hopes
to change.
With Moto Guzzi we are now facing
what we call the heritage brand dilemma, del Lario on the shore of Lake Como and

Group. The dilemma is this: Preserve
decades of history and tradition, or change
to stay relevant for a rapidly evolving
market? Heritage shouldnt tell you where
you are, but where to go next, he says.

decided to collaborate on a street bike. Two
years later, Carlo Guzzi, Emanuele Vittorio
Parodi, and his son Giorgio, started Moto
Guzzi and created their first mass-market
motorcycle, the eight-horsepower Normale.
The bike sold well, and the guys found
success when they brought their lightweight
motorcycle to the racetrack, taking home
their first trophy from the 1921 Targa Florio.
In subsequent years, Guzzi debuted several
other successful models, until the onset of

Times were tough, but Guzzi persisted,
and in the early 50s the company came
out with acclaimed models like the Guzzi
Cardellino 65 and the Falcone. By then it
had cemented itself as a force in racing and
became the first motorcycle company in
the world to build a wind tunnel, reducing
its bikes wind resistance to improve
top speed. The full-scale tunnel allowed
designers to streamline their bikes but also
let riders test out different stances and
body positions to maximise their speed
on the racetrack. The tunnel was actually
a modified design of a tunnel created by

told me that every time they turned on the
wind tunnel, the lights in the town would go
out, says Miguel Galluzzi, design director
at Piaggios Advanced Design Centre in
Pasadena, California. But everybody was
happy about it, because they knew they
were testing something nobody else had.
Still, Moto Guzzi struggled in a postwar
Europe that embraced less expensive
scooters. With motorcycle popularity
waning, Guzzi reluctantly shifted its focus
to smaller bikes. By the late 50s, the

Google has taken to the stage to
showcase several devices. We went
into detective mode to gure which
would bless our home, our pockets
and, of course, our time.
1. PIXEL 2 & PIXEL 2 XL
Now that Google has seen what
Apples and Samsungs new smart
phones can offer, theyve pulled
back the curtain on their own, new
smartphone, the Google Pixel 2 and
2 XL. As seems to be the case with
all new phones, Google is boasting
better cameras on both the front
and rear that will take higher quality
picturesregardless of how bad a

Google is looking to inltrate your
home with the Home Mini, a smart
speaker thatll inconspicuously sit in
any room of your home so you can
control smart home accessories, get
info at will or just have fun calling
out ridiculous demands. The mini
speaker functions exactly like its
Google Home big brother in terms
of the info it can deliver, the tasks

it can accomplish and its ability to
recognise multiple users from voice
alone. It is well-priced, so this entry-
level smart speaker might end up
being a candidate for every room.
4. HOME MAX
Googles go-big-or-go-home
version of the smart speaker was
possibly made with the intention
of putting Apples HomePod and
Amazons Echo in their crosshairs.
Functioning exactly as the regular
Google Home speaker, the Max
is more focused on delity and
delivering quality sound from
any and every music streaming
service with whom the Big G has a
partnership. All the Google Assistant
smart functions are tucked away

launch in a while, Google Clips is
a new, tiny camera that seems to
function almost autonomously, using
facial recognition and other software
to take pictures and short videos
of your loved ones automatically.
Google has touted Clips privacy
functions, connecting it directly to
your phone instead of the internet
overall, but we still have reservations
about a camera thats controlled by
some kind of pseudo AI. But it can be
very effective for home-monitoring
or for the time you leave your niece
or nephew with your gadgets.
6. PIXELBOOK &
PIXELBOOK PEN
Google has lled a niche in the past
with their Chromebooksscaled-
back laptops that are best suited
for simple uses like browsing the
internet or checking email. The latest
Chromebook from Google, going
by the name of Pixelbook, is actually

throne of It-Girl-dom in the short time
since her debut in M.S. Dhoni: The Untold
Story. Sexy selfies, killer dance moves,
a selfless love for animals and that
sunshine personality make it pretty easy

Welcome to Maxim, Disha! Hope you had
fun doing this shoot?
It was so good! The shoot went so well
and so fast. It was raining very heavily in
Mumbai that day, it was just one of those
days. But we had so much fun trying
different looks. The results are so young
and cool and sexy. I really loved my whole
shoot experience.
Its pretty early in the day right now. Are
early mornings your thing?
It depends. Sometimes we have to wake up
as early as 4.30 am for shoots. And I wake
up earlier because I like to work out before
the shootI cant work out at night. Today,
I woke up a little late, though.
So youre a morning personlucky you.
We hear youre a fitness fiend, too?
Yeah, but right now I dont have the
proper equipment here at the hotel;
they dont have a proper gym. I keep
two activities a dayI do cardio in the
form of dance or kick-boxing and, in the
evenings, I usually do weight training to
gain some muscle.
Youre super fit, and you exude positivity.
Tell us the secret because wed really like
to try it out.
Honestly, I feel you cant be positive
all the time. You have those days when
youre down or its something else like
hormonal imbalances, ha! I think whenever
Im working, Im happy. When Im not
working, I need to move... I need to do
something every day otherwise I tend to
get depressed. So I keep myself busy. Also,
I believe once you decide to be happy,
everything will be happier!
We couldnt agree more, to be honest.
When it comes to your personal style,
are you one of those whos a stickler
for perfection?
I pretty much live in my trackpants and
gymwear every day. Only when I have to
go for events or somewhere I have to
look a little presentable is when I dress
up. But I hate dressing up. If you ever see
me in those spotted pictures, I usually
look bad. I love sportswear. Im a sporty
girl... more like a guy, actually.
We beg to differ, as do millions of
your fans! When do you feel sexiest?
When I dance. Otherwise, Im not a
very cool person. But when I dance
I feel very confident, cool and sexy
I feel like Beyonc! Just thinking about
her makes me feel sexy.
Youve also called Beyonc your idol
I love Beyonc, yeah! Shes my idol
because shes so strong as a woman,
so independent, and she really inspires
me because shes ruling it right now.
Shes so hardworking. Ive watched
all her interviews, but the best thing she
said is that for you to find a soulmate
someone who completes youyou need
to complete yourself first, by finding
something you like. You need to have
your own passion, your own aim. Then,
you can complete someone else, too.

TravelI wish I could do it more often. I
love travelling so much. I love the beach
and I love swimming. I wish I lived on
a beach and my room opened up to the
water. Unfortunately, Mumbai isnt like
that and I cant teleport to a beach every
time Im stressed. So, I usually just eat
something decadent to feel better.
What do you find the most attractive
about a man?
I like simple guys because Im a simple girl.
I dont have many demands. I would be
attracted to someone with some passion
and motivation in life. I like that.
Whats your guilty pleasureTV shows
or classic movies?
I like watching films before I go to sleep
every night. Im not really into TV shows,
though I did watch 13 Reasons Why on
Netflix, and it was a cool show. If I get the
time, I switch on the TV to watch films.
Recently, Ive enjoyed Annabelle 2. I love
horror and action movies... told you Im
a guy! Im not really into romcoms.
Youre a super dancer. Any chance youre
a fantastic singer, too?
No, no, no! I cant sing at all. This is
something I cant do anymore. I used to

sing well when I was young but then my
voice changed and now its horrible, and I
just cantthats why I dont go for karaoke
nights. And, somehow, every person
around me sings. I like to hear people
sing, but its intimidating because youve
got people singing professionally at those

notes and I just cant do that.

pretty crazy
Theyre so sweet and very loving. I still
manage my own account so I have instant
access to them.
How do you deal with all the attention
and, sometimes, the hatethat comes
with it?
The hate is a part of it. One mantra I follow
is that you shouldnt be too happy or too
sad about anything. Thats why nothing
affects me too mucheither too much
appreciation or too much negativity. Girls,
especially, get a lot of shit for nothing.
People will judge you for what you wear. I
dont really care about that. Im here to live
my life and Im happy to be doing my work.
Nobody knows me better than me. Its also
kinda cool when my fans, who are really
just good people who support women,
come out in defence and, then, theres a
comment war going down. And, when you
think about it, everyones fighting over one
picture in cyberspace? Instagram isnt real
life, you know. People tend to take it too
seriously sometimes.
Given the nature of the Internet,
everything is anonymous so trolls get
away with a lot of stuff that they wouldnt
have the guts to say in real life.
Yes! All the profiles writing the hate stuff
are fake accounts. No one will ever own up
and say it. They just want attention. Thats
that. Just ignore them, I say.

Patani like
When Im not filming, I wake up and play
with my new puppy and kittentheyre
so cute. They love each other. Bella, my
puppy is the dominating one, of course,
but theyre happy to have each other. Then
I go for my morning workoutkick-boxing
or dance every alternate day. I come back
post-noon and have lunch. Then I take a
nap. Naps are very important to me. Then
I go to the gym in the evening, come back,
have dinner and... thats my day!

commission was to create a
piece which would be a joy to
engage with and would expand
the experience of collecting the
timepieces, a way to enjoy the
collection, the story of each
watch and their relationship to
each other, says Walsh.
At first glance, the cabinet
looks like a futuristic pod,
armoured and structured to
fit into a larger object. Viewed
in isolation, each section is
like the frame of an expensive
ring, ready for its jewel
companion. But the shape is a
homage to warping time, the
concept of which is generously
acknowledged in this unique
objectas much in its creation
and development as in what it
holds inside its cavity.
The cabinet has been
crafted from fumed oak,
and is internally composed
of 108 segments. To access
the watches, an original and
intricate locking mechanism has
been created, designed in the
spirit of a complication. Each
part certainly looks as complex
and ensures that the cabinet is
at its very essencehorologic.

Walsh and his team decoded
the form and the function
at conceptionand this
allowed them to ensure that
each watch would be safely
ensconced, despite variations
in case sizes and straps. It
also ensured a seamless fit for
the parts. I believe we can
enhance the quality of our
lives by surrounding ourselves
with objects that possess
values beyond their function
or aesthetic, that possess
intelligence in their creation,
that one can interact with and
that will stimulate senses each
and every time one engages
with them, says Walsh.
This is in keeping with
Wankas belief that only
uniqueness creates genuine
value, as watchmaking is a
limited resource. Personal
taste and individualised
advice from an expert on-site
cannot determine the price of
precious time, but can influence
the value we ascribe to it,
concludes Wanka. The same
principle applies to Walshs
unique cabinet.

them, you change neural pathways and
synapses in your brain to open up a new
state of positive thinking.
6. Watch what you eat
Research shows that the kind of food
you eat can determine how you may
feel. According to a study in the Journal
Of Pharmacological Research, foods that
are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (were

to mean a trip to the gym. A brisk walk,

early and walking the rest of the way all
count. Aim to put in at least 30 minutes,
three to four times a week.
9. Acceptance is key
Its okay to not feel on top of the world
all the time, but shutting yourself out
and not realising that you need to come
out of it is what causes people to suffer.

Dr Khurana. a) Accept your emotion, b)
accept the situation in front of you, c) act it
out. According to a research done by the
University of California, people who accept
mental experiences instead of judging, have
better psychological health. The next step
is to act on the situationextroverts tend
to focus on the outer world and believe in
acting out, and excel when there are visible
results. Introverts on the other hand get
their energy by thinking and reflecting on
their past.
10. Invest in experiences
Buying Experiences, Not Possessions,
Leads To Greater Happiness is a study
done at the San Francisco State University
in 2009 that demonstrates that experiential
purchases, such as skydiving, watching
a play or even going out for dinner result
in increased greater well-being than

what you can change, and what you cant,

beach, or just observing nature.
21. Make music your BFF
According to a psychology research,
listening to music with the goal and desire
to become happier may actually lead to
happiness than simply listening for the
sake of listening. So the next time youre
listening to your favourite band, consciously
add in a little intent of being happy and
watch how well you respond after.
22. Pursue a hobby
Not only is it mentally stimulating (not

The predawn chill of December 5, 2015. Kelly Slater

in his wetsuit, board in hand. The 11-time World
Champion surfer dives into the water and although
hes taken a similar predawn plunge countless times
before, this morning is different. With onlookers that
include fellow World Surf League pros Nat Young
and womens champion Carissa Moore, the 45-year-
old paddles out and catches a wave that may turn
out to have been the most groundbreaking ride of
his life. Carving up and down the face with the
smooth slashes of a fencers blade, Slater dips into
the waves barrel. There, crouched in what surfers
call the green room, Slater rides for what seems like
an eternity.
As he emerges from the tube, he triumphantly
throws up his arms while the crowd cheers, because
this is no ordinary wave. Slater isnt in the Pacific
Ocean but rather 170 km inland, on a man-made lake
in Californias San Joaquin Valley. And the wave isnt
a product of Mother Nature but of Slater himself.
Through the Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC),
the surfer and entrepreneur has spearheaded a
decade-long quest to build the perfect artificial wave.
He had a vision of bringing surfing to landlocked
states and countries and, in doing so, revolutionising
the sport. Ive been waiting for this moment since
2005, he said in a video posted that December. This
is the best man-made wave ever made.

 Vision has always been an integral part of Slaters success.
Growing up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, he and his older brother,
Sean, with whom he surfed, did not have the luxury of big West
Coast swells. That meant making the most of smaller surf, seeing
somethinga spot for an aerial, a chance for one last cutback
where others saw little.
At 18, Slater turned professional and quickly won his first pro
contest, the Body Glove Surf Bout, at Lower Trestles in California.
He signed a six-figure deal with Quiksilver. Two years later, he
claimed his first World Championship, the youngest surfer in
history to do so. Slater mania was born. He was a regular on
Baywatch and dated celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Gisele
Bndchen. He modelled underwear for Versace and opened for
Pearl Jam with his own band, the Surfers.
All the while Slater kept winning, including five consecutive
World Championships from 1994 to 1998. He possessed
extraordinary talent and indefatigable hunger, but what really
separated him from the rest was his inventiveness. Surfing, at its
core, is as much art as sport. Greatness requires improvisation and
pushing limits la Miles Davis or Pablo Picasso, and no one was
more imaginative than the kid from Florida.
Then Slater retired, only to return to the World Surf League
Tour (formerly called the Association of Surfing Professionals) in
2003 and eventually win five more titles, the most recent in 2011.
In an interview, the surfing magazine Stab asked him to describe
himself in clinical terms. Slater replied, half-joking: Obsessive-
compulsive disorder mixed with a little borderline addictive
personality disorder when it comes to things he loves.
While his love of surfing hasnt waned, he shouldnt,
theoretically, still be competing. The average age of the rest of the
WSLs top 10 surfers is 26.3, and Slater is nearly twice as old as
points leader John John Florence. Yet, in August last year, there
was the senior citizen of pro surfing beating Florence in the final of
the Billabong Pro Tahiti. With his showing at Teahupoo, one of the
most powerful breaks in the world, Slater earned his 55th elite tour
win, further cementing his legacy.
For the past few years, however, the greatest surfer of all time
has sought more than great waves. Hes trying to do some good
in the world, says Pete Johnson, an Oahu, Hawaii, native whos
been friends with Slater for 30 years. Hes passionate about other

Slater is a voracious reader, whether the
subject is business, nutrition, or cancer, the HIM A SURFING
disease that took his father in 2002. Hes
hands-on with the Kelly Slater Foundation, ICON FOR MORE
which has supported the fight against cystic
fibrosis and melanoma. Hes become more THAN 25 YEARS
conscientious, making sure to take time to
call friends going through hard times. Hes
expanding his horizons. Evolving. I strive
to be better and better in all aspects of my
life and to learn as much as I can about the
things that interest me, Slater tells Maxim.
Two of Slaters most recent interests
have been developed with the same
vision he first brought to Cocoa Beach. In 2014, he broke ties
with Quiksilver after 23 years to form his own clothing line,
Outerknown. Employing the talents of designer and fellow surfer
John Moore, founder of the acclaimed surf lifestyle label M.Nii,
and Julie Gilhart, the former fashion director of Barneys New York,
Slater sought to create a brand that was surfer chic as opposed
to beach bro. Outerknown launched in July 2015, and Slater has
insisted on couture with a conscience.
I wanted to create an independent, socially-compliant supply
chain and use environmentally-friendly textiles and materials,
Slater explains, pointing out the labels use of organic cotton
and hemp, regenerated Italian wool, and recycled fishing nets.
Describing Outerknown, he uses words like integrity, transparency,
and sustainability. Sustainability comes from the materials that
go into making the clothes and workplace conditions being up to
scratch, he says. The things behind the scenes were as important
to me as the end product.
Slater is a co-owner of Firewire
Surfboards, and in 2016 the company
launched, for the first time, a set of boards
of his own design. Like Outerknown,
Firewire focuses on sustainability, and its
the first global manufacturer to have every
board it makes qualify for Sustainable
Surf s Ecoboard certification. In the past
couple of years Ive been taking a bigger
interest in things Im involved with, Slater
says. Board design is a natural thing for
me anyway, and I never stop working on it,
so it was natural to start something that was
right in my wheelhouse.
As for his other passion project, KSWC,
the possibilities are staggering. No longer beholden to geography
and unreliable ocean swells, the sport could potentially explode
training centres across the globe, surfers able to refine their skills
365 days a year. Instead of golf, resorts could offer guests the
chance to catch a wave. The KSWC wave could help the industrys
dream of making surfing an Olympic sport finally become a reality.
Yet, like Slater himself, the wave project is a work in progress.
It didnt disappoint, says Johnson, who at Slaters behest surfed
the KSWC wave last year. But Kellys always seeking to improve it.
While at the San Joaquin Valley property, Slater constantly tested
variable power levels, fiddled with different speeds, and took
copious notes.
Perfection may take a while, but the worlds greatest surfer isnt
complaining. Its great to start out big and fast if you can sustain
that, he says. But you get the last laugh if you work out how to
have the longevity youd imagine you can have with a fresh mind
and a healthy approach.

ASK ANY CONNOISSEUR OF ART, AND SHE OR HE WILL TELL YOU
that details are everything. That these sometimes-intricate
little monsters can elevate a seemingly normal rendition into a
masterpiece, giving it a special place in your heart and mind. Be it
poetry, be it sculpture or be it a photograph, a memorable piece
grabs you and doesnt let go. Like a jealous girlfriend.
Do you need a keen eye? Yes. Do you need knowledge of
art? It helps. But, most important, you should enjoy itand
discover something new every time you look at it. These words
are more than true when it comes to the work of Fabian Oefner,
the renowned Swiss photographer who works at the confluence
of art, science and mechanics. Though he trained in product
design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, hes been
into photography since he saw Harold Edgertons iconic photo of
a bullet piercing an apple, at 14. His host of photographic works
(titled Infinite Moment in Time, Oil Spill, Iridient, Millefiori

and Hatch, among others) are visual delights that capture
movement in stunning stillness; they channel phenomena such as
the human aspect of industrial design, sound waves, iridescence,
centripetal forces and even biology. While he has worked with
brands on campaigns and on commissioned art projects, it is with
his Disintegrating series that Oefner has captured the interest of
menand automotive enthusiastsall over the world.
As the title signifies, these images capture cars that appear to
have blown apart. Not just any cars, of course, since Oefner has
picked some of the most iconic sports marques ever. The series,
which he began in 2012, features the 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR
Uhlenhaut Coup with gullwing doors, the 1967 Ferrari 330 P4, the
1961 Jaguar E-Type, the 1936-37 Audi Auto Union Type C, the 1957
Maserati 250F, the 1969 Ford GT40, the 1934-40 Bugatti 57 SC and
the 1982 Porsche 956. Each car is shown in vivid detail, blurring the
relationship between engineering and drama.
 The machination of creation is long and time-consuming,
and often entails stitching together thousands of individual shots
to create one complete image. To Oefner, it explores essential
questions about the relationship of time and reality, ultimately
creating a visually-rich rendition of a moment that never existed.
THE PROCESS
Oefner begins by sketching his vision of the disintegrationhow
each and every car will figuratively explode and where each
individual piece will go. This is followed by dismantling a scale
model in entirety, so that each component can be placed in the
perfect position. The illusion of the exploding car relies on the
exactness of position for each part, so these first steps are critical.
After the deconstruction of the scale-models, he places each
piece based on his initial sketch, using pieces of string, tweezers
and fine needles. After meticulous calculation of angles and
lighting, he photographs each component, using more than 2,000
photographs. Eventually, all these are blended together to create
the final image.
Throughout the process, the wheels act as a reference point
for the parts, each nut and bolt. It is painstaking work, and takes
more than two months to complete. Though the images appear
as though they are computer-generated, they are masterpieces of
photography. And thats how Oefner intends them to be. He says
he is fascinated by the clean, crisp looks of 3D renderings. So, I
tried to use that certain type of aesthetic and combine it with the
strength of real photography.
He also feels the Disintegrating series is about inventing a
moment in time. What you see in these images, is a moment
that never existed in real life. There is a unique pleasure about
artificially building a moment. These are possibly the slowest high-
speed images ever captured. The whole disassembly in itself takes
more than a day for each car due to the complexity of the models.
But thats a bit of a boy thing. Theres an enjoyment in the analysis,
discovering something by taking it apart, he adds.
THE APPROACH
Oefners work is investigation-based, and he says art is his tool to
explore and understand the world that surrounds us. He is curious
by nature, and says, I think curiosity is the key to creativity. I
love Albert Einsteins quote: I have no special talent. I am only

attraction to the un-ordinary got a boost with his education
at the Basel University of Art. And, through product design, he
learnt that a successful creative pursuit is a multi-layer process that
combines tactile definition, aesthetics with emotional appeal and

functionality. Oefner has also served as Leicas Director of Visual
Style for Geosystems, which widened his horizons when it comes
to visualising time and the invisible effect of natural sciences.
Over time and through his evolving work, it is the thrill of the
unknown that has come to guide his sensibility. I think that is
precisely what drives most artists or any other kind of explorer.
The quest for the unknownbe it exploring new techniques of
how to visualise an idea or coming up with new concepts, he
says. While a large part of his work is manifest in digital mastering,
he prefers not to be pinned to any one medium. Whichever
media works best to communicate my ideas, I end up using it.
Photography is one of them. Two installations that Ive worked on
deal with the concept of space and time, and sound turned into
motion. For these two ideas, I felt that an installationan artwork
that the viewer can walk around and really be a part ofwas a Dali and Praxiteles. The Disintegrating series is not just a one-off,

Ren, the 20-year-old model and

followers and counting), is sanguine about
why she gets all those likes. Confidence is
what people tend to gravitate toward, and
also, obviously, sex. I dont consider that a
bad thing, though. If a woman likes to post
about her body, that doesnt make her a
slut, desperate, or dumb. It still blows my
mind we are stuck in that perception of

Ren grew up in the tony coastal town

and getting plenty of second glances for
that body. At the age of 13 she was scouted
to model for the surf chick label Brandy
Melville, and photos of her in a bikini
soon went viral, laying the foundation for
a mini empire that blended traditional
commercial jobs with a huge social media
following. Earning notoriety at such a
young age was surreal, she says. Its
still weird.
Thanks to her manga-esque
proportionsBambi eyes, a 23-inch waist,
and a gym-earned rear viewand a knack
for conveying a bubbly, jet-setting sex
appeal, Ren was at the vanguard of a tribe
of genetically blessed influencers. For
millions of young girls, anything she does
is #goals; fans obsess over everything
from her diet to her sex life. For years, her
relationship with fellow social media star
Jay Alvarrez only added to her fans sense
that they knew everything about her,
and the pair banked on that oversharing,
posting dreamy YouTube videos that
garnered millions of views.
Last February, the couple confirmed
their split, and this spring, in the run-up
to launching her own fitness label, Ren
Active, Alexis took to Twitter to explain
that being Alexis was not all jaunts to
Hawaii and lounging by the pool with a
puppy while wearing a G-string. Ive gone
through a lot as far as health, she wrote.
I overworked myself to the point of
malnourishment.
Now, Alexis says, shes in a better
place. Im stronger, happier, and
healthier than Ive ever been...In the last
six months Ive opened up to my followers
about my struggles in my day-to-day. I
think being vulnerable to other humans is
a form of strength.
She also takes pains to point out that
shes not just some girl in a swimsuit.
People think I dont have substance
and Im just another pretty face. I have
been through a lot of life experience for a
20-year-old. People tend to judge a book
by its cover. I love being unexpected and
gaining respect for who I am and not
how I look. If youre thinking of pickup
lines, she says, channel your inner Elon
Musk. I love a guy who knows who he is,
can make me laugh, and challenges me
intellectually...I love talking about space,
our society, and what the future holds for
us as a civilisation.
But lest you imagine Ren takes herself
a little too seriously these days, she
always defaults to a rather cheeky sense
of humour, as evidenced by a recent
Instagram series showing her having lunch
and not so coyly lifting her white T-shirt
to show some generous underboob as she
tucks into a burger and kale salad.

Ive always fancied dying in a plane crash
because Id love for other people to die on
the same day as me. And then the headline

Do you have any deathbed confessions?
I think Id just like to f*ck with people. So
Ill say something I dont believe in before I
die so that it totally changes who I am.

Narendra Modi is not that bad. Ive spent
so many years just dissing this man and by
the end Ill be like but hes cool ya. That
would get people really f*cked, right?
Whats your last meal?
KFC! Over everything. Processed food
always. How much ever I can consume.

Frankly I dont think Im going anywhere
after I die. But for the sake of this imaginary

music was very well received.
Is music a major influence
in general?
You know, honestly, I dont work
with themes. Its the current state
of mind thats all. Music is
something that stays with me all
the time. Its something special and
plays a very, very important role in
all our lives.
Based on your collection, would
you suggest monochrome for
Indian summers?
I suggest wear whatever you are
comfortable with and want to
wear. I wouldnt want to dictate
anything to anyone.
How about a trend you wish would
end soon?
Personally, I wish that trends
werent of any consequence at all.
Trends are second-hand options
and people should think for
themselves. The moment you fall
into the trap of trends you let go of
your own interpretation. Thats just
my suggestion, of course.

We saw a fair amount of
geometrics in your pieces. Are
there any rules one should keep in
mind while dressing in geometric
separates?
Well, the thumb rule here is that
there shouldnt be any rules. But if
its a very bold geometric, then it
tends to stunt height. So basic rules
like, vertical stripes work for
people who are not very tall. Again,
you know, these arent dictated.
Just go ahead and wear whatever
makes you happy.
How do you see the menswear
market growing in India?
I think over the centuries, Indian
men have always been
experimental. From traditional
costumes which were royal and
opulent to regular outfitsour men
have always been very comfortable
in their own skin and in dressing
up. And the fashion had always
been attached to a bit of
functionality, besides the royal
factor. Its only in the last few
decades as people are travelling
more and the national confidence
is growing that we are adopting
newer styles that traditionally
werent ours.
What are your thoughts on
athleisure becoming a mainstream
style? A number of designers are
embracing it now.
Its the idea of comfort and taking

that into more formal fashion. I
think it will evolve with active
sportswear. People will integrate
active sportswear ranging from
track and field clothing to footwear,
especially sneakers, with formal
wear because its comfortable. So
that will be a blend that will evolve
beautifully. It doesnt have to be
about branding. It will be about the
subject and construction of the
garment. And obviously, selection
of the fabric.
Gender neutral clothing is starting
to make an impact on the runways
and the red carpet. Do you think it
has the potential to trickle down to
the regular Joes?
You know, its an extreme
statement either way. So unless
someone is really comfortable with
it, dont just do it because its in the
news right now.
Personally, how do you like to dress?
Honestly, I just have uniform!
My work is to make clothes, not to,
you know, worry too much about
what I am wearing when I am
making those clothes. I just stick to
what I am comfortable with and
honestly I dont really think about
it too much.
Who are some of the most well
dressed men in India right now?
For me its the person on the street.
The man in the desert and the guy
wearing his white shirt perfectly.
You know it has to be that common
man who is really comfortable in
what he is wearing. I find someone
like that interesting.

I believe the most stylish part is when youre

Why do you say that?
My style of play is usually dependent on the
match situation. I am very confident of my
game style and the choice of shots I play at
various stages of the game. I dont believe
in having a natural gamemy game
totally depends on the match situation.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Lets try and predict the future.
I dont like over-thinking and predicting the
future. My next target is always the next
game and next serieswhether its a Test,
ODI or T20.

it like to play professional cricket with
your brother? Any sibling rivalry there?
My brother is my pillar of strength. He
is playing great as well, and I wish to see
him don the Indian colours soon. There
is no rivalry among us. We are a source of
strength and inspiration for each other.
You obviously keep very fit. What does
your training schedule look like?
My training schedule is usually decided
by the team trainer, depending on the
schedule of matches. It also includes a lot
of recovery sessions in the pool etc., which
helps me retain my fitness and relax my
muscles. During off-season, my training is
a mix of training on grass, supplemented
with gym sessions. Its very important to
eat right to remain fit. Youll never see me
binge on junk food.
