Flocculator

Colloidal and emulsified particles are too small to be re- moved by flotation or sedimentation and most filtration systems. To remove them by these systems they have to be forced to form bigger, floc-like, particles. This is achieved by a process called coagulation-flocculation by adding chemicals to the water in a flocculator (explained in our CFF process brochure).

Flocculators are subdivided in 2 categories:

• Pipe flocculators (PFL) where the water itself creates the required mixing energy and

• Continuous Stirred Tank Flocculator (CSTF) where mixers provide the required mixing energy

Working principle

Flocculators provide the mixing energy and retention time required for floc formation.

PFL

Pipe flocculator are passive systems without moving parts, where the mixing energy for the different floc formation proc- ess steps are created by variations in the pipe diameter in the flocculator, while the required retention time for the different process steps is obtained by varying the pipe length.

A clear vision on water treatment

The mixing energy distribution is constant at any given point in a pipe cross section, which is ideal for floc forma- tion: Chemicals are quickly ideally mixed and the resulting flocs have the same size and strength: Consistently big flocs, that are easy to separate.

For proper floc formation the flow rate has to be kept within

a certain flow range, since both the mixing energy and re-

tention time are a direct result of the flow rate in the pipe flocculator. This usually requires the application of a buffer tank prior to a pipe flocculator.

CSTF

In Continuous Stirred Tank Flocculators, the mixing energy

is created by active top mounted mixers that are installed

in individual reactors with a certain volume. The necessary retention time and mixing energy for each process step is achieved by applying a certain reactor size and mixer size.

The actual mixing energy input in a CSTF is not fixed, it can be adjusted to the flow rate, giving a CSTF very wide operational range without the need to apply a buffer tank prior to the flocculator. The operational range of the CSTF is only limited by the reactor size that determines the retention time.

by the reactor size that determines the retention time. The resulting flocs have more variations in

The resulting flocs have more variations in size and strength since the mixing energy varies with the distance to the mixer in the reactor.
