Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Greetings of peace. I call attention to a couple of important things coming up.

First, Christmas Day falls on a Monday this year. This leads to the circumstance whereby December 24 is the
Fourth Sunday of Advent until 4pm, and then for the reminder of that day and evening we are celebrating
Christmas Eve. We welcome you and your family to the liturgical celebrations here that weekend. Perhaps some
people that you know are not aware of our extensive Mass schedule that weekend, including a midnight Mass on
Christmas Eve. Please help us to spread the word.

Tuesday, November 28, is Giving Tuesday, a national day of philanthropy for nonprofit organizations. Many
organizations, including the Shrine, count on proceeds from this day in order to make their revenue budget for the
year. The Shrines overall revenue goal for the day is an ambitious $150,000. The good news have a generous
anonymous donor who promises $50,000 if everyone else can collectively give $100,000. The proceeds of that
day will go to support the general expenses of the Shrine, including such things as our outreach ministries to the
poor, the Arch Street Band, support of the friars, and the salaries of the very capable staff here at the Shrine.
Please support us by making a donation in person or online on that day: Tuesday, November 28. Thank you for
your generosity.

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM

Executive Director

Year- End Gifts

As the end of the year approaches, we invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Shrine.
There are a number of ways to make this gift.

1. Cash/check - may be given in person or via the U.S mail. Please note that the gift must be
postmarked by December 31 to be counted for a 2017 tax deduction.

2. Credit card Make a gift on line www.stanthontshrine.org with a credit card. Or, you may call the
Development Office (857-206-7243) and give your credit card over the telephone. Our electronic giving
kiosks in the lobby, and at the information booth are two other options for credit card gifts.

3. IRA Charitable Rollover If you or someone you know is 70 or older and has a traditional Individual
Retirement Account (IRA), you can use your required minimum distribution to support the Shrine
through a Charitable Rollover gift. Contact the administrator of your plan and ask that your distribution
be a charitable rollover to the Shrine.

4. Matching Gifts A corporate matching gift is a tremendous way to increase your personal gift to the
Shrine. We encourage you to take advantage of your employers matching gift program.

Thank you for all you do to help us live out the Gospel in Boston. Please continue to pray for all those
whom we serve with love and compassion. If you have questions about making a gift, please contact
Maryanne Rooney-Hegan at (617) 542-6440 ext. 115.
#Giving Tuesday
Can you believe it? #Giving Tuesday is less than two weeks. Please join us November 28, for this global day of
philanthropy. Join our 24-hour celebration.

Our goal is $100,000 for 100 Arch Street. This year we have an anonymous donor who has agreed to a challenge
gift of $50,000. If we raise $100,000 on #Giving Tuesday, our donor will give an additional $50,000. Imagine that!
Your gift will help us raise a total of $150,000.

Wont you help us reach our goal? Every gift we receive on #Giving Tuesday will support our outreach ministries.
Simply go to our website, stanthonyshrine.org on November 28, and make your gift.

You may also text your gift. Text Donate to 617-712-2233. It is that easy! If you prefer, come to the Shrine on
#Giving Tuesday to make your gift in person. Our friars and members of the Shrine community will be in the lobby
to greet you and accept your gift. We invite you to be as generous as you can. Please know your gift truly makes a
difference in the lives of all those whom we serve. Abundant blessings to you in this season of giving thanks.

Essay 5 of 6
Last year, I quit my job. I was a fulltime Marketing Manager for a major digital publisher and I was
wearing myself thin spending all my nights, weekends and vacation days building my non-profit, The
Syria Fund, from the ground up. I knew that if I had more time, more actual hours in the day, The Syria
Fund could grow and make even more of a difference. So one day, I decided it was time to go all in.
Over the last 12 months, Ive been so lucky to take the time to really grow our organization and
become experts in the refugee response in Jordan. I spent time in Government Ministries in Jordan
speaking with officials about our work. I put together theatre and music workshops that reached
hundreds of kids. I wrote class curriculums, packaged together employee handbooks and purchased
and distributed 1000s of items to families across Northern Jordan. Stateside, I spoke to school groups,
community centers and other philanthropic communities around the U.S. and helped coordinate
motivated individuals to get involved. With the support of so many, we made a huge impact for Syrian
refugees in Jordan, creating new jobs, training teachers, educating children and continuing to distribute
essential aid. And thats just this past year.
2018 is approaching and Im so excited to bring new programs to reach more families in need across
Jordan. With the many thousands of Syrian children still out of school and the expertise weve
developed, were doubling down and expanding our education enhancement programs. This coming
year, we want to establish three new education spaces to host approximately 450 new students.
Heres the plan:
1. An Emphasis On Academics:
As education remains an urgent need for out-of-school children and others facing academic
difficulties, our program will provide children with classes in Arabic, Math and English. Well
hire Syrians in the community to go door-to-door to meet with families and discuss the
importance of education and how our program can benefit their kids. Well target out-of-school
children or dropouts but also children who are struggling academically and could use extra
support.
2. Provide Psychosocial Support:
Nearly all Syrian refugee children have experienced various degrees of trauma. Studies show
that when children are exposed to the types of traumatic events that many witnessed during
the war in Syria, the brain is directly impacted and kids will struggle to develop and function
normally. The three areas that are most negatively impacted are attention, memory and
communication three skills required to be a successful student. We want to develop and
train on diversified and engaging teaching methods that guide students to exercise the
affected parts of the brain and help improve the symptoms of stress and trauma.
3. Youth Engagement:
Teenagers face many obstacles: they may be too old to re-enter formal education, many are
already working as unskilled laborers, and many teenage girls are married early to ease the
financial burden on their families. Many of these young adults will never return to school.
To reach this vulnerable demographic, we will host Life Skills Trainings with a youth-to-youth
approach and encourage the development of leadership, community engagement and
teamwork skills.
4. Community Learning: We want families to be a part of the learning process alongside their
children. Parents interest and participation in their childrens education have long-lasting
impact for the wider communitys development and resilience. Engaging with parents is also
an opportunity to receive feedback from families on ways to improve our programs.
Throughout the year, well organize Awareness Sessions that focus on subjects directly linked
to students growth and experiences with discussions around education, protection, and
health and hygiene.
Im so proud of this plan and of the direction were heading but I cant do it alone! I hope that these
past few weeks of essays have been informative and inspiring for you. Weve discussed the impact of
the refugee crisis in Jordan, the particular emergency around education and the successful things that
weve shown we can accomplish through The Syria Fund. This is our next big step and I hope you will
join us!
