1. Achievement
A test relating to a taught module or course.
2. Proficiency
A real-world test which measures abilities relating to wider
standards.
3. Norm-referenced
A test which places candidates in rank order in relation to
each other.
4. Criterion-referenced
A test in which candidates are measured against a set of
descriptors irrespective of other candidates.
5. Formative
A test which is primarily used to give feedback to learners.
6. Summative
A test which provides a conclusive measurement of a
candidate often without detailed feedback.
7. Holistic
A test which ascribes an overall measurement of ability.
8. Analytic
A test which ascribes discrete judgements for different
components within a skill or skills.
