Cary has been carefullytracking over events
for the past 12 years. Someyears he has even ob-
s e r v e do v e r 7 0 0 p h e n o l o g i c aai c t i v i t i e s M

p u s , b u t m a n y o t h e r s i t e si n N o r t h e a s t e rW n isconsin
are also part of his study.
As a scientist,Gary tries to follow the same tree
or plant year after year. This is done in an attempt to
correlatethe timing of these eventswith heating
degreedays or some other measurableweatherdata.
One of the resultsthat has surprisedGary is how
variablephenologicalevents really are, not too much
is guaranteed.lt's hard to predict dates or show a
tight connectionbetween events.

five years old. This program will help us find that

offering loads of ideas and inspirationon how to

BayCleanUp Day again,which will
be Saturday,May 9 this year. As
in the past,I call on Audubon
membersto help,and makethis
daya fieldtrip. Wewill meetand
getstartedat 9:00a.m.on the
northend of BylsbyAvenuewhich
deadendson the bayjust westof
the PulliamPowerPlant. Whenwe
finishthere,we'll go a few blocks
southto Riveruiew Parkwhich is
on the north end of Broadway and
the eastend of PrairieAvenue.
Afterwe sanitizethis site,we
headfor KenEversNatureAreaon
the nonh end of MilitaryAvenue
and work till the RiverRallystarts
at I 1:30a.m.at the NevillePublic
Museum.
That celebration will be held
on the riverbankwith a program,
entertainment and a vastassort-
mentof refreshments to satisflithe
mosthungryof us.
In preparation, bring gloves,
saveand bringmanysmaller
plasticgrocerybagswhichwe will
fill and put in the largegarbage
bagswhichwill be supplied.
