Forces on an Abutment

Analysis of Cantilever Wall

Following series of steps maybe followed to obtain a satisfactory design.

STEP 1: SELECT PRELIMINARY PROPORTIONS OF THE WALL.
STEP 2: DETERMINE LOADS AND EARTH PRESSURES.
STEP 3: CALCULATE MAGNITUDE OF REACTION FORCES ON BASE.
STEP 4: CHECK STABILITY AND SAFETY CRITERIA

a. Safety against sliding.

b. Safety against over turning.
c. Adequacy of bearing pressure.

STEP 5: REVISE PROPORTIONS OF WALL AND REPEAT STEPS 2-4 UNTIL

STABILITY CRITERIA IS SATISFIED AND THEN DESIGN.
STEP 6: DESIGN OF RCC MEMBERS

Analysis of Cantilever Wall

STEP 1: SELECT PRELIMINARY
PROPORTIONS OF THE WALL.
Figure shows commonly used dimensions for
a gravity-retaining wall and a cantilever wall.
These proportions can be used when scour is
not a concern to obtain dimensions for a first
trial of the abutment.

STEP 2 & 3: DETERMINE LOADS AND EARTH
PRESSURES & CALCULATE MAGNITUDE OF
REACTION FORCES ON BASE.

STEP 6: DESIGN OF RCC MEMBERS

1. Check thickness of stem for shear stress.

2. Design stem reinforcement for bending.
3. Check thickness of heel for shear stress.
4. Design heel reinforcement.
5. Check shear stress for toe when the toe is long.
6. Design toe reinforcement for bending.
7. Check shear stress in key when key is deep and narrow.
8. Design key reinforcement for bending.
