The LV switchgear & controlgear equipments are used in electrical power distribution
systems. The distribution systems needs protection against overload and short-circuit
condition. The switchgear and controlgear are primarily required to perform this function
in addition to control and switching operation of various power equipment. Distribution
system includes protection devices like circuit-breakers, fuses and components assembled
in an enclosure. These assemblies are normally designated like Motor control
centers(MCC), Distribution boards (DBs), Power Control Centres (PCC), LT Panels etc. These
assemblies take care of proper distribution of electrical power and protection under all
service & environmental conditions and ensure safety &continuity of service.
IEC 61439 series of standard gives complete requirements such as general rules,
constructional & test requirements for LV Switchgear & controlgear ASSEMBLIES for a wide
range of uses. Each relevant ASSEMBLY standard with reference to general rules focuses on
the characteristic and performance required by an ASSEMBLY. The recent IEC 61439 series
of standards harmonize as far as practicable, all the general rules and requirements that
apply to Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies (ASSEMBLIES). The series
further seeks, in order to obtain uniformity of requirements for ASSEMBLIES, consistency
in the verification of ASSEMBLIES and to avoid the need for verification to other
standards. This program will focus on overall structure of the standard and its test
requirements, test methods and Evaluation of LV switchgear & contolgear equipments as
per latest IEC 61439 standards.

CPRI PROFILE
Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) was established by Government of India in the year
1960 with Head Quarters at Bangalore. The main objective of the Institute is to serve as a
National laboratory for undertaking applied research in Electrical Power Engineering besides
functioning as an independent National Testing and Certification Authority for electrical
equipment and components. As a National Certification Authority, CPRI has been serving
Indian Power Sector and overseas for the last 5 decades. The Institute has several research
laboratories and testing facilities engaged in different specialized fields.
Short Circuit Laboratory is serving electrical Industries and utilities by testing for more than 50
years. It has state of the art facilities to conduct testing on Low voltage switchgears and
controlgears, Distribution Transformers, Instrument transformers, Low voltage Switchgear and
Controlgear assemblies etc., CPRI is a member of STL (Short Circuit Testing Liaison), world
renowned group of International certification bodies and accredited by M/s. Intertek (formerly
known as ASTA) of UK. Our Lab is also accredited by NABL, BIS at National level.
