Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Ashley Petre Date:

Group Size: 20 Allotted Time 40mins Grade Level 3rd

Subject or Topic: Where is water found?

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

3.3.3.A4 Connect the various forms of precipitation to the weather in a particular place and
time.

3.3.3.A5 Explain how air temperature, moisture, wind speed and direction, and precipitation
make up the weather in a particular place and time.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
The third grade students will be able to identify different forms of water by writing the terms
in their science journals.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Exit slip 1. List three places where you can find water.
2. Vocab sheet 2. Students will fill out definitions for each of
the given words.
Assessment Scale:
Exit slip:
Excellent- lists 3 correct places where water can be found
Average- listed 3 places but not all correct
Below average- listed places but none were correct

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
Students will know the characteristics of water
Students will know the different types of water matter
Students will know how to observe and take notes
Key Vocabulary:
Fresh water- water that has very little salt in it
Ocean- a large body of water
Glacier- a huge sheet of moving ice
Icebergs- a large floating mass of ice detached from a glacier or ice sheet and carried
out to sea
Groundwater- underground supply of water (moves through the soil until it reaches
solid rock)
Salt water- water containing large amounts of salt
Content/Facts:
Scientific understanding where water is found on Earth
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
1. First, say to the students, Why do you think water is important? after students
respond, explain that Water is not only important for you and me but it is also
important for the environment.
2. Then ask, How much of the earth do you think is made up of water? write down
guesses on the board
3. Then write the correct percentage in the middle of the board (71%) and state, About
three-fourths of the Earths surface is covered by water.
4. Show How much water is on Earth video

Development/Teaching Approaches
1. Teacher fills up a bucket of water with one gallon of water
2. Teachers tells students There are about 326 million trillion gallons of water on Earth.
The teacher will write the number on board so kids get a better understanding
3. Teacher will say, Therefore, water plays a huge part on this Earth
4. Teacher will pass out iPads and journal sheet to the students
5. Teacher explains that they are to go on the internet and research five different places
where water can be found and then record them on their journal sheet
6. The students will then flip over their paper and search to find all of the terms
7. When all the students are finished have a class discussion on where water can be found
and the different terms that they were researching

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
1. Show Brainpop video on water
2. Review what was learned about where water is found
3. Hand out exit slip and it will be collected on their way to math class
Accommodations/Differentiation:
Accommodation: provide student with low vision a larger print exit slip and journal
and vocab sheet

Materials/Resources:
Exit slip
How much water is on Earth video
Brainpop video on Water
iPads
Science journals
Journal and vocab sheet
Reflective Response:
Report of Student Learning Target/Objectives Proficiency Levels

Remediation Plan (if applicable)

Personal Reflection Questions

1. Did I complete the lesson in the allotted time?

2. What could I have changed to enhance the learning of my students?

Additional reflection/thoughts
