SCHOOL YEAR 2017-2018

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
With the completion of two semesters of Health the students will have received instruction in all seven areas of personal health and safety including
social issues as they apply. The areas of concentration during the first semester include: Personal Health Development, Mental/Emotional health, and
Chemical Use and Abuse. The areas of concentration for second semester include Fitness/Nutrition, Disease Prevention and Control, Family Life and
Human Sexuality, and Personal Safety and Environmental Health. (Length: Two semesters/Prerequisites: None)

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The learning standards are designed to motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and reduce health-related risk
behaviors.
The comprehensive health education learning standards include a variety of topics, such as personal health, family health, community health, consumer health,
environmental health, sexuality education, mental and emotional health, injury prevention and safety, nutrition, prevention and control of disease, and
substance use and abuse.

COURSE METHODS:
To assist each student in learning and understanding more about their health/wellness, and promote a healthier way of life.
To give students opportunities to express themselves creatively.
To help students improve their decision-making skills, problem-solving skills, and creative-thinking skills.
To guide students on the path to becoming productive members of society.
To provide a supportive atmosphere conducive to learning.
To increase each students interest in learning and academics.
To give students the opportunity to practice responsibility skills, and time management skills.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to be present for class and complete all assignments by following specific assignment instructions in order to earn a passing grade for
credit in HE-201 Health class. The course will consist of formal lectures from text books and other resource materials. It will include teacher/student/group
discussions, current events, journals, overhead transparency illustrations, selected teacher handout materials, hands-on applications and demonstrations (oral
presentations and projects). Homework may be assigned! Textbook and supplemental texts will be provided as needed. Lab fees are not applicable to this
class. Teacher can modify syllabus upon discretion!!

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:
1. No Gum Chewing!
2. Be ready for class! Do not leave the designated area of the class unless given permission by the instructor.
3. Respect yourself, your teacher, your classmates, government, and school property.
4. Be extremely well behaved for my substitute and perform any other related duties as directed by the Instructor/Substitute.
5. Student will put positive effort and complete the requirements for the class period.

ABSENCES: (See Attendance Board Policy 411, 330)


1. Student is responsible for work missed and must make-up work or any other assignment within two days upon return.
2. NO VALID EXCUSE, NO MAKE-UP WILL BE GIVEN! (WILL AFFECT FINAL GRADE)
3. The student must give the teacher 7 days advance notice for any field trip function. (No advance notice, no field trip!)
4. 1st unexcused absence, student will receive a verbal warning.
2nd unexcused absence, an attempt to inform parents will be made. (Administrative, Attendance Referral, Progress Report, Student Assessment Card or
Teacher phone call)
3rd unexcused absence, a referral will be sent to the attendance administrator for corrective action.

TARDINESS:
1. Tardiness will not be tolerated.
2. If a student arrives to class 00:01-14:59 minutes late, a tardy infraction will be given. (Must provide a valid note to excuse the tardy infraction. The word
of mouth is not a valid excuse)
3. If a student arrives 15 minutes late or more, an absence infraction will be given. (The student must provide a valid note to excuse the absence infraction.

4. 3 unexcused tardy will result in 1 unexcused absence. A referral will be sent to the attendance administrator for corrective action if the student is
excessively tardy.

INTERVENTION FOR STUDENT FAILURES:

SERVICE LEARNING:
Board Policy 381 in accordance with Public Law 30-53 states that students shall complete 75 hours of service learning as a requirement for high school
graduation. (9th grade -20hrs; 10th grade -20hrs; 11th grade -20hrs; 12th grade -15hrs). A student must earn a minimum of 60 SL hours to be eligible for senior
status as cited in BP 351.4.
Service Learning is defined as a teaching and learning approach that integrates service to the community with academic study to enrich learning, teach
civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Each Teacher at JFK High School will offer Service Learning Proposal during the School Year for a total of five (5) possible Service Learning hours per
proposal. Students will earn the Service Learning hours (based on Service Learning proposal) upon full completion of the Service Learning PARC Process.

**Information will be forthcoming (Possible opportunities may include but not limited to health fairs, fitness events, sport events like Special
Olympics, Chief Brodie Anti-Bullying Presentation, Breast Cancer Awareness Wave etc).

Citizenship Criteria and Evaluation: Citizenship grades will be based on total points achieved divided by total points possible.

EXTRA CREDIT: (Given only to students who are in definite need)


1. Students must qualify by obeying all rules, requirements, and trying very hard at his or her endeavors.
2. Reports, Journals, Spirit and Athletic events may be assigned for extra credit.

GRADING:
**STUDENTS WILL BE GRADED ON THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES**

PROJECTS (25%): Completing Projects with quality in accordance with criteria required and in within given timeframe.
HEALTH FOLDER (25%): Students will be responsible for their health folders and bringing it to class every day.
CLASS WORK (25%): Completing assignments correctly and fully participating in daily activities will earn respective points.
TESTS/QUIZZES (25%): Test scores are determined by adding total points earned and divide by total points possible.
**Averaging your grade:
Simply add up the total number of points you earned and divide it by the total number of points possible for each sectionthis will give you your
current grade. Semester grade will be the average of the two quarters.

*Failure to comply with any or all requirements may result in the student failing the course due to the fact they were unable to maintain the
minimum number of points to pass. The cumulative grade for the quarter and semester will result.
**SIXTY PERCENT (60%) AVERAGE IS REQUIRED TO RECEIVE A PASSING GRADE FOR THE QUARTER/SEMESTER**

THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN, OR STUDENT ASSESSMENT CARD ABOUT THE STUDENT INFRACTION(S).

3RD INFRACTION: REFER TO ADMINISTRATOR FOR DICIPLINARY ACTION (REFERRAL)

The family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) guarantees that the academic records for students over 18 years old cannot be discussed with
anyone except the student.

As noted above, the rights under FERPA transfer from Parents to the Student, once the student turns 18 years old or enters post secondary institution at any
age. However, although the rights under FERPA have now transferred to the student, a school may disclose information from an eligible students education
records to the parents of the student without the students consent, if the student is a dependent for tax purposes. Neither the age of the student nor the parents
status as a custodial parent is relevant. If a student is claimed as a dependent by either parent for tax purposes, then either parent may have access under this
provision. (34 CFR 99.31(a)(8).)
