Terminology
Orient yourself to the following concepts related to mentoring through a quick google search and
defining these terms in your own words: (2 pts)
Mentor: One who is experienced and trusted to assist another who is younger or less
advanced. They will not tell one how to do something, but just teach the subject.
Mentee: One who is being trained by an older or more trained individual. They are
becoming better at a subject.
Protg: One who is guided and supported by an older and more influential person.
Reciprocal mentoring: Mentoring changes one another and either individual can take
and change positions between mentor and mentee.
Reverse mentoring: A younger individual teaches an older individual to teach topics
based on new technology, social media and current events. Commented [S1]: Added this whole section since it was

In the article, the authors seek to redefine mentoring by applying literature that views mentoring
as individuals receiving mentoring assistance from many people at any one point in time,
including senior colleagues, peers, family, and community members. Embracing this theory,
which incorporates social network research, may help you begin to establish a developmental
network that is conducive to the 21 century workplace, geared toward the goal of having strong
st

ties with diverse network groups. This type of developmental network is known as an
entrepreneurial typology.

TYPES OF MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS Based on the Higgins and Kram article, what are
the differences and similarities between a traditional mentoring relationship and a
developmental network? To depict your answer, complete the table below. Be comprehensive.

Based on the Higgins & Kram article, define the following terms, in your own concepts that
determine relationship strength (2 pts):
emotional affect: Emotional affect on a relationship should be a key factor in a
relationship as it can determine the kind of relationship individuals have. I believe that all
relationships have some sort of emotional affect as that individual interacts with another
to some extent.
reciprocity: Reciprocity will increase overtime as a relationship forms. This can occur
when mutual respect and understanding grows.
frequency of communication: Frequency of communication depends on the seriousness
or level or relationship individuals have. This can depend on the dependency of said
individuals, as well.
relationship ties: Relationship ties are dependent on the severity of the relationship. If
one is in a professional relationship in which both parties share the ownership of a
company, then there are major relationship ties. If two students work on an assignment
together but receive separate grades, then there are few to none relationship ties.

ANALYSIS OF MY MENTORS
#1 Mentors Name (5 pts): Rachel Willis
Area of Support: This person is increasingly supportive.
Does this person provide career, or psychosocial support? Explain.
Diversity: She provides all kinds listed above, as she is a mentor in a personal sense and a
person I respect majorly in my career path. I constantly go to her for advice about working or
personal issues.
To what social system does person belong (e.g., family, work, church, friends)? Explain.
How many of your mentors is this person connected with? Explain the relationships, if
applicable.
Mrs. Rachel Willis belongs as a friend and in friends. She is like a sister to me as she has been
in my life since I was 11 years old. I have grown up looking up to her as she is extremely
ambitious. She is connected with two others as they all worked together. They all were friends
and coworkers at their school, but not out of teaching.
Relationship Strength: Extremely strong.
Refer to the Higgins and Kram article for review of concepts related to relationship strength.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define emotional affect, describe the emotional effect between
you and this mentor.
Mrs. Willis is close to me in such a sense that she has an emotional affect on me since she has
been a reason I would like to become an educator.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define reciprocity, explain the level of reciprocity between you
and this mentor.
I feel like the reciprocity is high for both of us, but in different areas. I take Rachels professional
advice seriously, as she takes my personal advice more seriously than my professional advice.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define frequency of communication, what is the frequency of
communication between you and this mentor?
We communicate 3-4 times a week about different concepts. This can be anywhere from our
shared hobbies, to this assignment or even on politics.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define relationship ties, do you see your relationship with this
person as a strong tie or a weak tie relationship? Provide an example that would illustrate this.
Very strong, she has been my mentor since I was 12 years old. I always looked up to her since
she is very determined and ambitious. For example, she has triplets and still works as an EMT
since it is what she wants to do, not because of financial stability in any sense. I have admired
this beause it makes me realize that I can work and go to school if she can do that.
#2 Mentors Name (5 pts):Liz Barth
Area of Support: Professional
Does this person provide career, or psychosocial support? Explain.
Diversity: Our relationship has been strictly personal. We do not communicate much besides
this assignment.
To what social system does person belong (e.g., family, work, church, friends)? Explain.
How many of your mentors is this person connected with? Explain the relationships, if
applicable.
She fits into a professional relationship since we have only communicated about this topic.

Relationship Strength:
Refer to the Higgins and Kram article for review of concepts related to relationship strength.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define emotional affect, describe the emotional effect between
you and this mentor.
We do not have any emotional effect as communication has been strictly over technology about
one set topic.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define reciprocity, explain the level of reciprocity between you
and this mentor.
I see my reciprocity on my end as I have much respect for her without knowing her too well.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define frequency of communication, what is the frequency of
communication between you and this mentor?
Our frequency of communication has been via email and texting thus far and very dispersed
throughout the last couple of weeks.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define relationship ties, do you see your relationship with this
person as a strong tie or a weak tie relationship? Provide an example that would illustrate this.
I do not find a relationship tie since there is no personal relationship in any way.
#3 Mentors Name (5 pts):Carrie Evangelesta
Area of Support: Professional
Does this person provide career or psychosocial support? Explain.
Diversity: Purely career as we have no personal relationship. I have much spect for her as
Rachel Willis referred her and talks very highly of her.
To what social system does person belong (e.g., family, work, church, friends)? Explain.
How many of your mentors is this person connected with? Explain the relationships, if
applicable. She is a professional person who I do not have consistent contact with lately. She is
connected to one and possible two connections since Rachel and Liz were her coworkers.
Relationship Strength:
Refer to the Higgins and Kram article for review of concepts related to relationship strength.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define emotional affect, describe the emotional effect between
you and this mentor.
There is no emotional affect on her end as I am a stranger reaching out to her from a referral
from an old coworker. I have a small amount of emotional affect from her as I have respect for
the great educator I hear of her to be.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define reciprocity, explain the level of reciprocity between you
and this mentor.
There is no reciprocity as we have little contact, besides the necessary for this assignment.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define frequency of communication, what is the frequency of
communication between you and this mentor?
We have enough to consider her a mentor, but I know nothing outside of her professional
career.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define relationship ties, do you see your relationship with this
person as a strong tie or a weak tie relationship? Provide an example that would illustrate this.
There are no relationship ties as we have hardly communicated.
#4 Mentors Name (5 pts): Merrie Rheingans
Area of Support: Professional and personal
Does this person provide career, or psychosocial support? Explain.
Diversity: She has offered career and psychosocial support throughout the years. She has acted
as a mother figure to me since I was 13 years old. Because she is not my real mother, she has
been brutally blunt over the years about certain concepts. I have much respect for this woman
as she has been ambitious and done everything for herself and her family in mind.
To what social system does person belong (e.g., family, work, church, friends)? Explain.
How many of your mentors is this person connected with? Explain the relationships, if
applicable. She belongs as family because she has been a mother figure. Growing up, she
would constantly assist me in social and school work in any way she could. Over the years, she
would give me physicals for sports, grade essays and give mothering advice.
Relationship Strength:
Refer to the Higgins and Kram article for review of concepts related to relationship strength.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define emotional affect, describe the emotional effect between
you and this mentor.
We have emotional affect in a sense that she has been able to create a mutual respect for one
another over the years. Her daughter and I have been through so much together and we are
grateful for one another.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define reciprocity, explain the level of reciprocity between you
and this mentor.
I am the only one showing reciprocity through the respect I have for her advice.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define frequency of communication, what is the frequency of
communication between you and this mentor?
We communicate at least twice a month through seeing one another face to face.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define relationship ties, do you see your relationship with this
person as a strong tie or a weak tie relationship? Provide an example that would illustrate this.
The relationship ties are strong as her daughter is basically my sister and only friend (sad, I
know). It has been a blessing to see how I have been able to grow from this womans advice.
#5 Mentors Name (5 pts):Adam Jardine
Area of Support: At this point, personal.
Does this person provide career, or psychosocial support? Explain.
Diversity: He serves as psychosocial support through the advice and sticky situations he has
helped me through. He served as my religions teacher in high school. I was able to come to him
for academic and personal advice at any time. I know that to this day, I would be able to go to
him for anything.
To what social system does person belong (e.g., family, work, church, friends)? Explain.
How many of your mentors is this person connected with? Explain the relationships, if
applicable.
He belongs in a church social system as that is what the church who provided the class he
taught. It was incredible to see my life change through his class. I gained more insight for myself
and the trials I face on a daily basis through his lessons.
Relationship Strength:
Refer to the Higgins and Kram article for review of concepts related to relationship strength.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define emotional affect, describe the emotional effect between
you and this mentor.
I am probably the only one who has an emotional affect from his lessons he taught in his class.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define reciprocity, explain the level of reciprocity between you
and this mentor.
I am the one who uses reciprocity to try to become the strong and knowledgeable person he is
one day.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define frequency of communication, what is the frequency of
communication between you and this mentor?
We communicate via Facebook by commenting on one anothers post from time to time.
Based on how Higgins and Kram define relationship ties, do you see your relationship with this
person as a strong tie or a weak tie relationship? Provide an example that would illustrate this.
In high school, I did not get along with my peers as one girl really had something against me
(unknown to this day) and would turn people against me? (Also very elementary of her). He
would let me eat lunch in his classroom and help with homework during this time so I would not
have to deal with the drama from that single girl.
REFLECT
Reflect about the mentor who has had the most lasting impact on your development. What
factors from the Higgins and Kram article on developmental network do you think are the most
influential in supporting career change, personal learning, organizational commitment, and/or
work satisfaction? Include 3 in-text citations from the Higgins and Kram article and 1 (or more)
outside resource. Add these sources to the reference list below. (300-400 words) (7 pts):
The mentor generally provides high amounts of both career and psychosocial assistance
(Thomas & Kram, 1988). From being a teenager on, I have found Mrs. Rachel Willis to be the
greatest mentor I have had. She has been such a lasting impact in my life as she I so independent
and does things for herself. I am astonished by the drive this single individual has. Even with
triplets, she managed her marriage, her three children with their activates and working full time.
She has never complained, but just continues to go on! Not only has she been a drive for my
career, but also in a psychosocial assistance.

Receiving career assistance from a variety of developers should increase the individual's in- formation,
resources, and access to a variety of career possibilities (cf. Burt, 1992). I made a career change
from police work to social work after Rachel began working towards being an educator. I found
the joy it brought her, as well as the amazing experiences she had on a daily basis. At the time
she began teaching, I babysat her children throughout the day and found that she would come
home with a smile on her face and tell me about the way she was able to reach out to her
students. I practiced reciprocity through following in her footsteps by choosing to take her
example and do with it what I wanted to (Thomas & Kram, 1988). She brought so much passion
and changed so many childrens lives. To say that Rachel was the reason I decided to become an
educator would be an understatement. Because of her being my mentor since I was so young, I
have been able to decide how I can make an impact in childrens lives every day. She has
affected my career and psychosocial life in these said words.

GOALS TO DEVELOP MY DEVELOPMENTAL NETWORK

From the Higgins and Kram reading, summarize why it is desirable to have an entrepreneurial
network, and explain how a developmental network might become an entrepreneurial network.
(100-150 words)
I have learned how important networking is to ones future career. The more one reaches out
and connects with others, the better it is in the end. Gaining relationships with others who care
about your well being and personal success will keep one motivated to continue on throughout
the entirety of a career. Developmental network can transition into entrepreneurial network
when connections are noticeably made between individuals. If Frank and Judeth have a strong
bond, but Weston does not have a strong bond with Frank, but does with Judeth at their weekly
meetings. If Weston were to become connected to all individuals then it would become
entrepreneurial work.
