CHAPTER 9

ETHICS AND
PUBLIC
SPEAKING

THE IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS

• Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with

issues of right and wrong in human affairs
• Questions of ethics arise whenever we ask whether
an action is moral/immoral, fair/unfair,
just/unjust, honest/dishonest
• Sound ethical decisions involve weighing a
potential course of action against a set if ethical
standards or guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR ETHICAL SPEAKING

• Make sure your goals are ethically sound

• Be fully prepared for each speech
• Be honest in what you say
• Avoid name-calling and other forms of abusive
language
– Name calling and personal dignity
– Name-calling and free speech
• Put ethical principles into practice

1
PLAGIARISM

• Presenting another person’s language or ideas as

one’s own
• Giving the impression you have written or
thought something yourself when you have
actually taken it from someone else
• Three types of plagiarism:
1. Global plagiarism
2. Patchwork plagiarism
3. Incremental plagiarism

1. GLOBAL PLAGIARISM
• Stealing a speech entirely from a single source and
passing it off as one’s own
2. PATCHWORK PLAGIARISM
• Stealing ideas or language from two or three sources
and passing them off as one’s own
3. INCREMENTAL PLAGIARISM
• Failing to give credit for particular parts of a speech
that are borrowed from other people
• The most important of these increments are:

1. Quotations
2. Paraphrases: to restate or summarize an author’s
ideas in one’s own words
• PLAGIARISM AND THE INTERNET
• One way to avoid doing plagiarism while working with
the Internet is to take careful research notes. Keep a
record of the following:
1. The title of the Internet document
2. The author or organization responsible for the document
3. The date on which the document was last updated
4. The date on which you accessed the site

2
